Developing Normative Consensus: How The "International Scene" Reshapes The Debate Over Internal And External Criticism, Ericka L. Tucker Dec 2013

Developing Normative Consensus: How The "International Scene" Reshapes The Debate Over Internal And External Criticism, Ericka L. Tucker

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Can we ever justly critique the norms and practices of another culture? When activists or policy-makers decide that one culture’s traditional practice is harmful and needs to be eradicated, does it matter whether they are members of that culture? Given the history of imperialism, many argue that any critique of another culture’s practices must be internal. Others argue that we can appeal to a universal standard of human well-being to determine whether or not a particular practice is legitimate or whether it should be eradicated. In this paper, I use the FGC eradication campaigns of the 1980s to show that …

Third Parties And The Social Scaffolding Of Forgiveness, Margaret Urban Walker Sep 2013

Third Parties And The Social Scaffolding Of Forgiveness, Margaret Urban Walker

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

It is widely accepted that only the victim of a wrong can forgive that wrong. Several philosophers have recently defended “third-party forgiveness,” the scenario in which A, who is not the victim of a wrong in any sense, forgives B for a wrong B did to C. Focusing on Glen Pettigrove's argument for third-party forgiveness, I will defend the victim's unique standing to forgive, by appealing to the fact that in forgiving, victims must absorb severe and inescapable costs of distinctive kinds, a plight that third parties do not share. There are, nonetheless, significant, even essential, roles played by third …

Naturalizing Moral Justification: Rethinking The Method Of Moral Epistemology, Theresa Weynand Tobin, Alison Jaggar Jul 2013

Naturalizing Moral Justification: Rethinking The Method Of Moral Epistemology, Theresa Weynand Tobin, Alison Jaggar

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The companion piece to this article, “Situating Moral Justification,” challenges the idea that moral epistemology's mission is to establish a single, all‐purpose reasoning strategy for moral justification because no reasoning practice can be expected to deliver authoritative moral conclusions in all social contexts. The present article argues that rethinking the mission of moral epistemology requires rethinking its method as well. Philosophers cannot learn which reasoning practices are suitable to use in particular contexts exclusively by exploring logical relations among concepts. Instead, in order to understand which reasoning practices are capable of justifying moral claims in different types of contexts, we …

Affective Disorders Of The State: A Spinozan Diagnosis And Cure, Ericka L. Tucker Jul 2013

Affective Disorders Of The State: A Spinozan Diagnosis And Cure, Ericka L. Tucker

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The problems of contemporary states are in large part “affective disorders”; they are failures of states to properly understand and coordinate the emotions of the individuals within and in some instances outside the state. By excluding, imprisoning, and marginalizing members of their societies, states create internal enemies who ultimately enervate their own power and the possibility of peace and freedom within the state. Spinoza’s political theory, based on the notion that the best forms of state are those that coordinate the power and emotions of those within a state, offers us both a diagnosis of and a cure for these …

Community Radio In Political Theory And Development Practice, Ericka Tucker Jul 2013

Community Radio In Political Theory And Development Practice, Ericka Tucker

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

While to political theorists in the United States ‘community radio’ may seem a quaint holdover of the democratization movements of the 1960s, community radio has been an important tool in development contexts for decades. In this paper I investigate how community radio is conceptualized within and outside of the development frame, as a solution to development problems, as part of development projects communication strategy, and as a tool for increasing democratic political participation in development projects. I want to show that community radio is an essential tool of democratization and democracy outside of the development frame. To do so, I …

Situating Moral Justification: Rethinking The Mission Of Moral Epistemology, Alison Jaggar, Theresa Weynand Tobin Jul 2013

Situating Moral Justification: Rethinking The Mission Of Moral Epistemology, Alison Jaggar, Theresa Weynand Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This is the first of two companion articles drawn from a larger project, provisionally entitled Undisciplining Moral Epistemology. The overall goal is to understand how moral claims may be rationally justified in a world characterized by cultural diversity and social inequality. To show why a new approach to moral justification is needed, it is argued that several currently influential philosophical accounts of moral justification lend themselves to rationalizing the moral claims of those with more social power. The present article explains how discourse ethics is flawed just in this way. The article begins by identifying several conditions of adequacy …

Forgiveness In A Political Context: The Challenge And The Potential, Pol Vandevelde Mar 2013

Forgiveness In A Political Context: The Challenge And The Potential, Pol Vandevelde

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

In this article I examine the challenging question concerning whether communal forgiveness is possible. In order to show that it is in principle possible I articulate and then respond to two of the most powerful objections to communal forgiveness that have been formulated to date, namely: (1) the argument that only victims can forgive; and (2) the argument that forgiveness is unconditional and thus outside the scope of such things as communal or political deliberation.

I argue that communal forgiveness is a process of transformation that requires at the practical level an institutional framework in which a representative of a …

Garden As Symbol: Nature/City, Curtis Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

My approach .to environmental aesthetics here begins with reflections on previous encounters with the subject, focusing initially on aesthetics of the city. Then follows a brief look at current theories of environmental aesthetics as they relate to nature aesthetics. The final section will consider garden as a symbolic link of nature/city. Nelson Goodman 's theory of exemplification will serve as an account of garden as a symbol linking nature and city .
