Jazz has not always been "America's classical music." In the first decades of the twentieth century it was regarded by much of the black and white Establishment as unsettling, provocative, even dangerous - attitudes exacerbated by the social upheaval of the Great Migration around the time of World War I. Enter black riverboat jazz bands to negotiate the color line: to help "white Americans approach in an oblique manner underlying social and cultural changes that were too deep and too heavily laden with pain, guilt, and fear for most citizens to discuss openly" (5). Guidelines For Guest Conductors Of Honor Choirs, Patrick K. Freer

The article presents suggestions for conducting honor choirs. The musical goals for the honor choir experience are the responsibility of the conductor. The guest conductor also has an opportunity to invite teachers to gauge the effectiveness of his or her rehearsal, conducting, and performance techniques. Before accepting the first invitation to conduct an honor choir, one is advised to to attend a similar event. One of the primary tasks for guest conductors is submitting proposed repertoire for the organizing committee's approval. Guest conductors are often provided with programs from previous years as a guide.

Sound Learning is a partnership among the Georgia State University (GSU) School of Music's Center for Educational Partnerships in Music (CEPM), the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, professional musicians in the Atlanta area, and schools in metropolitan Atlanta. It is a curriculum-based music education partnership designed to enrich children's music learning and advance the role of music in children's development and interdisciplinary learning. In this article, the author examines the effectiveness of the Sound Learning model in which students achieve "purposeful engagement" by working with artists as artists. This book contains 80 exercises designed to reinforce a variety of competencies. Exercises represent three types of learning that have emerged as invariable aspects of the introductory course:
- Didactic learning
- Experiential learning
- Independent skill development
Didactic learning relates to philosophical, theoretical, and/or practical information that is communicated via lecture, discussion, and modeling.
Experiential learning refers to the students' firsthand experiences in the learning/therapy group process that accompanies didactic instruction. In this form of learning, students have opportunities to observe, participate in, co-lead, lead, and verbally process improvisation experiences.

The Iowa State University of Science and Technology in Ames, Iowa, recently hosted the 2007 National Conference of the Society of Electro-acoustic Music In The United States (SEAMUS) from March 8th through the 10th. The annual SEAMUS conference brings together nationally recognized composers, performers, and researchers in the field of computer music for a half-week program of concerts and paper sessions. The 2007 conference featured the premier of Synchronisms No. 11 for Contrabass and Electronic Sounds by Mario Davidovsky (b. 1934).
