An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease Dec 1978

An Analytical Study Of Twentieth-Century Cadential Techniques, Rhenda Ronfeldt Pease

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper is to devise a codification of twentieth-century cadential techniques used by some of the major representative composers. It is because Debussy had such a profound impact upon twentieth-century music -·because of his innovations and influences upon this century's composition - that he is included in this paper. His music will serve as the beginning step away from traditional cadence procedures. Twentieth century compositions which are non-tonal and basically tonal will be studied for their non-traditional cadential procedures. Traditional procedures refer to those classical clichés which one expects to hear at cadence points, such as: IV-V-I; …

A Descriptive Study Of Parish Clergy And Their Counseling Practices, Gregory J. Ludlow

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

It has been the function of societies throughout history to provide comfort and support for it's troubled members. In the past, this function was performed by the society's religious institutions.Today, as in the past, people who want solutions.to the problems they experience, or who want to gain pathways to possible solutions, look to their religion, their church organization, their clergyman, to their God. The clergymen of a community are apt to be the first professionals of that community to be consulted when the need for help is felt.

Melville And Beckett: A Legacy Of Pessimism, Jeanette Elaine Bahnke Jan 1978

Melville And Beckett: A Legacy Of Pessimism, Jeanette Elaine Bahnke

Masters Theses

Though separated by nearly a century and by two different cultures, Herman Melville and Samuel Beckett complement each other's concept of man and his world. This concept is the concept of pessimism, which each man adopted and expanded throughout his works.

Both authors lament the concept that man must struggle to attempt unachievable goals, yet both also insist that the only way to maintain a type of balance is to "go on."

The Beckettian-Melvillian hero, consequently, is a "thought-diver." As he strips layers from the Self, he simultaneously strips layers from the cosmos. Thus, the stripping of the Self and …

Three Essays On The Reality Of Art, Brent A. Sparlin Jan 1978

Three Essays On The Reality Of Art, Brent A. Sparlin

Masters Theses

Three essays make up the main body of the thesis. The essays, “Can Art Really Be Real?,” “The Artist's Role” and “The Artist's Role in Society, Part II; Silence,” each deal with specific subjects which when combined, explain the thesis' title, The Reality of Art.

The first essay, “Can Art Really Be Real?” is an attempt to clarify what is real from what is unreal in art. The essay deals first with representational realism (such as is found in the work of Thomas Eakins), and defines artists who strive for exact renderings of objects as being illusionistic and not …

A Survey Of Sex Typing On Prime Time Television, Patricia Sue Henry Jan 1978

A Survey Of Sex Typing On Prime Time Television, Patricia Sue Henry

Masters Theses

According to former FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson, the average child will spend nearly 25,000 hours in front of a television before he or she is eighteen years old. With this fact in mind, I wondered what America's children learn from watching prime time television regarding sex-typing, or the characteristics which are considered appropriately masculine or feminine.

A review of related literature showed that critics in the early 70s pointed out that women portrayed on television were less numerous than men, less intelligent, brave, and adventuresome. In short, women were stereotyped as supportive underlings.

To find out if women fared any …

Personal Experimentation In Drawing, Bennie L. Drake Jr. Jan 1978

Personal Experimentation In Drawing, Bennie L. Drake Jr.

Masters Theses

In order to have a true understanding of art there must first be some knowledge of the development as well as of the artist himself. The artist and his work are one but must be looked at from different angles; beginning with the work itself and realizing that the artist creates to satisfy some need or desire which stems from some religious or social beliefs.

When doing comparative resource study, I attemped to combine the drawing skills of extablished artist; such as Walter Campbell, Herbert Railton, Willy Pogany and Aubrey Breadsley in order to improve and express my inner thoughts. …

Investigations On The Altered Plane As A Creative Element In The Visual Arts, Stephen J.T. Powell Jan 1978

Investigations On The Altered Plane As A Creative Element In The Visual Arts, Stephen J.T. Powell

Masters Theses

This is primarily a report of personal investigation by the author though some relevant references are used.

The work is divided into two parts representing two conceptions of the altered image bearing plane.

Essential to both conceptions is the use of the image bearing plane for its creative potential, rather than as a passive image support.

The modulated plane as image producer is discussed in part one with reference to its use for literal imagery and self derived imagery. Also mentioned are related printmaking, papermaking, plastic forming, and additive low relief techniques.

Part two deals with spatially related planes as …

One Artist’S Experimental Approach To Sculpture, John J. Smith Iv Jan 1978

One Artist’S Experimental Approach To Sculpture, John J. Smith Iv

Masters Theses

This paper is intended to reflect the creative sensibilities of one artist-scientist as he experiments with media and his perceptions of nature as an approach to growth. His philosophy revolves around the relationship of his experience, his natural instinctive sensibilities, their affection upon his intuition, and the resulting creative process. The stimuli for the process are found in the natural realm around him whether perceived scientifically or artistically. Due to the intrinsic nature of the creative phenomenon, it is very difficult for the artist to separate the scientific and artistic modes from the naturalistic or experiential stimuli. So he goes …

Cone 5 - 6 Crystalline Glazes, Barry W. Kishpaugh Jan 1978

Cone 5 - 6 Crystalline Glazes, Barry W. Kishpaugh

Masters Theses

The purpose for this research was to develop cone 5-6 crystalline glazes which will provide the potter with well-formed and large-sized crystals.

This firing range was selected for two reasons. First, very little information is available on crystalline glazes at this temperature range; and secondly, an attempt at conserving energy is being made by firing at this lower temperature.

Data obtained through this crystal research was gained via a series of 10 test firings. The kiln used for the testings and developing of the firing schedule for the Cones 5-6 crystal glazes was a Unique Kilns Model 2430, having a …

L. Frank Baum And The Technology Of Love, Robert Bruce Goble Jan 1978

L. Frank Baum And The Technology Of Love, Robert Bruce Goble

Masters Theses

L. Frank Baum, throughout his books of fantasy, especially the Oz series, gradually resolves the conflict of pastoralism and technology by developing a technology managed by love. Baum uses magic as a representation of both pastoralism and technology. Fairy magic, the capacity for love, represents pastoralism, and ritual magic, the capacity for good or evil depending upon who wields it, represents technology. Baum deals with the ways in which ritual magic or technology can be misused through selfishness and ignorance and points out how destruction can be avoided if technology were managed by not greed for power and money but …

The Evolution Of Child Labor Legislation In Illinois: 1818-1917, Frank Edward Storment Jan 1978

The Evolution Of Child Labor Legislation In Illinois: 1818-1917, Frank Edward Storment

Masters Theses

"The Evolution of Child Labor Legislation in Illinois, 1818-1917" traces the development of social, economic, and political attitudes towards child labor in the State of Illinois. These attitudes evolved from a general acceptance of working children as part of the socio-economic structure to the realization that the industrial employment was causing a moral, social, and economic degeneration of American life. These changing attitudes were reflected in the legislation passed by the Illinois General Assembly between 1818 and 1917.

Between 1818 and 1874 most legislation offered token protection to the child, but emphasized the moral well-being rather than the physical and …

Depiction Of Blacks In The Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Sheila Marie Foor Jan 1978

Depiction Of Blacks In The Works Of Ernest Hemingway, Sheila Marie Foor

Masters Theses

Ernest Hemingway, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, is one of America's outstanding literary figures. Criticism of his work has been voluminous--ranging from bitterly derogative to superlative--with most of it focusing upon the famous 'Hemingway code hero,' upon his crisp, concise writing style, and upon his much-publicized personal life.

One example of negative assessment by critics is the one concerning black portraiture in Hemingway's fiction. However, no work deals exclusively with this aspect of his writing. The purpose of this thesis is, first, to present a general discussion on the nature of prejudice and examination of black …

Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan Jan 1978

Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan

Masters Theses

The readjustment problems that were encountered by the prisoners-of-war (POWs) were caused by their identification problems, the chief aspect of which was their defensive isolationism. These problems produced further difficulties for the individual POW in the behavioral category and for the entire POW group in their underlying distrust of the outside world. These also produced confused reactions, paranoid syndromes, and a lack of participation in military and civilian affairs, and were expressed in the POWs as fearful withdrawal and belligerent negation with anti-social overtones. These problems were more marked in the case of the Korean War prisoners than in the …

The Rite Of Initiation In Pinter's The Birthday Party, Richard C. Slocum Jan 1978

The Rite Of Initiation In Pinter's The Birthday Party, Richard C. Slocum

Masters Theses

The paper is an attempt to give full treatment to elements in Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party which suggest the rite of initiation practiced in primitive societies. A few critics have touched upon the subject of initiation in the play, but they fail to discuss it in detail.

Extensive comparisons are made between Charles Eckert's summary of initiation rituals and the actions and characters in the play. The initiate is isolated from society as a preliminary to the rite of initiation; Stanley is isolated in a seaside boarding house. The initiate is secluded in a dark and threatening place; Stanley …

The Failure Of The Peaceful Road To Socialism: Chile 1970-1973, Trevor Andrew Iles Jan 1978

The Failure Of The Peaceful Road To Socialism: Chile 1970-1973, Trevor Andrew Iles

Masters Theses

On September 4, 1970 Salvador Allende became the first ever democratically elected Marxist president of Chile. In addition he headed a predominantly left-wing coalition government whose program entailed the achieving of socialism by peaceful means.

During the first six months of his administration Allende began to carry out a number of his policies in the areas of agrarian reform, nationalization of industries, and redistribution of income. These policies were populist in nature and succeeded in raising the level of support for the Unidad Popular government as shown by the results of the April 1971 Municipal elections. I argue that the …

An Exploratory Study Of Black And White College Students On The Hand Test, Marie Clark Jan 1978

An Exploratory Study Of Black And White College Students On The Hand Test, Marie Clark

Masters Theses

In the past Blacks have not been used in the construction or development of norms for psychological tests, though they are routinely administered to Blacks. Several researchers have made an effort to determine whether tests which have been standardized on White subjects are applicable to Blacks (Megargee, 1966; Johnson & Sikes, 1965; Mussen, 1953). These authors found that differences in personality of Blacks and Whites on personality tests should not be used to make inferences unless the two groups are matched on a number of prominent variables.

In general, the research suggests that there are significant differences between Black and …

Creating An Environment Which Produces Improved Student Writing, George David Brown Jan 1978

Creating An Environment Which Produces Improved Student Writing, George David Brown

Masters Theses

Plato said, “When the mind thinks, it talks to itself.” The mind must use words when developing ideas, when formulating concepts, when digesting and assimilating information. When the student writes, the mind should think. However, this does not always occur. The main problem in student writing is that the student does not think. For writing is thinking, the most exact and exacting kind of thinking.

This thesis suggests that in order to improve student writing, the conditions for improved thinking must exist. These conditions would include a change or environment from the traditional, authoritarian one to an open, self-appraising one. …
