Centering Community Voices Through Children's Literature: Co-Authoring An #Ownvoices Picture Book For The Maine Migrant Education Program, Melanie Shelton

Master's Theses

Since its inception, the field of migrant education has been characterized by a tension between honoring the subjectivity of migrant families and positioning them as victims. This same tension exists in the analysis of children’s picture books that depict the daily lives of migrant farmworkers. In response to Eve Tuck’s (2009) call for a moratorium on damage-centered research in the field of education, this report describes the collaboration process between a representative of the Maine Migrant Education Program and a migrant

farmworker and her family to write, illustrate, and present an autobiographical picture book. Las aventuras, travesuras, y peligros del …

"Si Tú No Fueras Tan Poco, Yo No Sería Tanto": El Catolicismo Español, El Fanatismo Religioso Y El Atraso Intelectual, Karl Douglas Groneman

Master's Theses

The question of Spain's stagnation with respect to other European countries has intrigued academics for centuries. In this thesis, I will be focusing on the intellectual stagnation of Spain. Some blame said stagnation on the monarchy, on economic policies, or on a lack of standardized education. Despite all of these are contributing factors, one area that is worth investigating further is intellectual stagnation due to religious fanaticism. This thesis examines 9 texts from the late 1800s until the early 1900s (1870-1930). Many themes are present in this study: censorship, ideological exaggeration, clerical corruption, Church authority, the family, and spiritual consolation. I …

Desde La Caballería A La Cristiandad: La Transformación Espiritual De Don Quijote, Amanda Kathleen Verduin

Master's Theses

Tejidos Urbanos: Representaciones Literarias Y Visuales De La Memoria En La Ciudad Imaginada, Marina Marisela Alvarez Jan 2018

Tejidos Urbanos: Representaciones Literarias Y Visuales De La Memoria En La Ciudad Imaginada, Marina Marisela Alvarez

Master's Theses

The urban imaginary is that which bases itself in a real physical and concrete space,

but is a construction created through the lense of a city's inhabitants. This thesis follows

narratives that have reconfigured the cities of México City, San Juan and Caracas from the

novels Hotel DF (2010), Simone (2011) and the film Pelo Malo (2013) respectively. These

contemporary Latin American & Caribbean narratives provide insight into sentiments

about one's country. Néstor García Canclini and Henri Lefebvre have argued the city is a

whole, and therefore it is analyzed as a microcosm and epicenter of its nation. With

emphasis …

La Escritura Subversiva De Reinaldo Arenas Por Medio De La Conformación De La Masculinidad Trágica, La Masculinidad Disidente Y La Masculinidad Homosexual, Pablo J. Vega

Master's Theses

Spanish Women Remembered In Elena Quiroga's Tristura, Escribo Tu Nombre And A Enferma, Ellen Patricia Brugliera Jan 2013

Spanish Women Remembered In Elena Quiroga's Tristura, Escribo Tu Nombre And A Enferma, Ellen Patricia Brugliera

Master's Theses

The Silenced Women in Spain

Through three novels written by Spanish author, Elena Quiroga (1921-1995), this thesis intends to develop a better comprehension of women's role and identity during the Second Republic in Spain (December, 1931-1936), and under Franco's almost 40 year reign between 1936 and 1975.

Although the Republic sought to initiate change for women via constitutional and legislative reforms, the forms of mobilization occurred under male tutelage, and the Republic's lack of strategy combined with organizational fragmentation led, in some ways, to the immobilization of women. Because the society was in flux, these attempts at reform were also …

Testimony, Remhi And Senselessness In Guatemalan Memory, Melissa Jean Boroughs Jan 2013

Testimony, Remhi And Senselessness In Guatemalan Memory, Melissa Jean Boroughs

Master's Theses

This thesis argues that the fragmented form of the Guatemalan collective memory concerning the genocide can be more clearly understood by analyzing and comparing testimonial literature, documentaries, the Truth Commission report, a novel, and works of performance art. All of these works are considered to be artifacts of memory of the Guatemalan genocide, each one offering a different perspective on the past and present of Guatemala.

Naturalism, Murder, And Identity In Three Short Stories Of Ramon Ferreira, Haley Lee Osborn Jan 2013

Naturalism, Murder, And Identity In Three Short Stories Of Ramon Ferreira, Haley Lee Osborn

Master's Theses

Literary And Visual Representations Of Traumatic Memory Of The Pinochet Dictatorship In Chile, Alison Tange

Master's Theses

This thesis presents an analysis of six narratives that contribute to the collective memory of the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. In this study, I attempt to pinpoint the commonalities, motivations, and differences in three literary texts - Un día de octubre en Santiago (Carmen Castillo, 1982), Mi verdad (Marcia Alejandra Merino, 1992), La vida doble (Arturo Fontaine, 2010), and three documentary films - La Flaca Alejandra (Carmen Castillo, 1993), Chile, la memoria obstinada (Patricio Guzmán, 1997), and Mi vida con Carlos (Germán Berger, 2008). These literary and visual narratives are deliberate efforts to shape the memories of the dictatorial past …

The Speech Of The Andean Mestizo In The Novels Of Ciro Alegria, Catherine Thorburn Neale

Master's Theses

This inquiry is made and presented from the point of view of a language teacher. After a student has acquired the basic skills of reading, writing, and speaking the foreign language, a most practical medium with which to continue his language study is literature. As well as gaining an understanding of people through literary study, he also may see the language in use as a tool for communication and become aware of some possibilities of it as an artistic medium. This study is concerned with the works of the Peruvian writer Ciro Alegria, who includes in his novels many examples …

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon Jul 1972

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon

Master's Theses

Camilo José Cela, a philosopher and a consummate artist, has produced a series of works which individually and as a group, are a careful combination of idea and form. One work cannot adequately be understood unless it is also seen in context with Cela's other works. Each of the novels, short stories, essays and travel books, is united to the others by Cela' s overall existential philosophical outlook, and each rests on and at the same time illuminates the others.

Alejo Carpentier : CivilizacióN Y Barbarie, MaríA Luisa P. ValdéS

Master's Theses

The Artistic Deformation Of Reality : An Ideological Portrait Of Tyranny In Tirano Banderas And El Señ̃Or Presidente, Roebrta Wynne Cohen

Master's Theses

Tyrants speak with many voices, bold many poses, and cast many shadows, but inevitably all wear the same face--the tragic face of tyranny itself. Many artists have painted the portrait; few have captured the essence of its tragedy. Valle Inclan and Asturias, each in his own way, depict the world of tyranny as grotesque and absurd in order to show the tragic condition of man. It is my intent to describe and analyze this grotesque world of tyranny, as portrayed in Tirana Banderas and Senor Preeidente; to compare the techniques used by each writer to create this world; to interpret …
