Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Along with the philosophical writings of ecofeminism’s greatest proponents and critics, the growth of ecofeminist philosophy has relied heavily on fiction writers. The term ecofeminism was coined in 1975, and the following year ecofeminism found fertile ground for exploration and growth in March Peircy’s science fiction novel, Woman on the Edge of Time (1976). The social, academic, and literary trends leading up to the emergence of ecofeminism, however, began well before 1975. Both Ursula K. Le Guin and Margaret Atwood are speculative fiction authors whose work before and after 1975 examines important ecofeminist topics and contributes to the growth of …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

When a plethora of primary sources exist from an artist, a tendency persists for the art historian to focus on an artist’s personality when analyzing or interpreting that artist’s work. In the case of Paul Gauguin and his Tahitian works, his personality faults, extreme character, and uncouth notions and motivations become the concentration of much scholarship and can lead to a misjudgment of the artist’s depiction of the Tahitian natives and culture. This paper examines how Gauguin represented a foreign peoples and met the goals he pursued under Primitivism, Symbolism, and Synthetism by analyzing the cultural contexts of Fin-de-siecle France …

A Deeper Look Into The World Of Costuming, Laura Mae Franzini

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

As designer for The Enchanted Attic, a children’s show, and Blood Brothers, a full length musical, I found that the requirements were vastly different for each project. In designing The Enchanted Attic I began by looking at what I knew: it was a children’s show, I knew children would be the main audience. When I was designing Blood Brothers I knew that it was a musical, and the audience was probably going to be teenagers and older since there was a bit of violence and heavier subjects addressed. My approach with these shows varied greatly, but there were still many …

Five Words When Ten Seem Necessary: A Memoir In Brevities, Rebecca Hazelwood Apr 2007

Five Words When Ten Seem Necessary: A Memoir In Brevities, Rebecca Hazelwood

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This is a memoir: fourteen stories on the naked page. There is an element of the concise, the succinct, in brevities that I like, a perfection of five words when ten seem necessary. For here I am a sex kitten on a mission trip, vexed with the haters, the teetotalers, and the wine patrollers. And here I am cubic zirconium next to a diamond, awed by thin tall gorgeous Jen. It is also here that I invent a not boyfriend with a penchant for plaid and here that I know about moonshine and whiskey hidden in Old Crow statues. I …

The fall of the Byzantine Fortress of Babylon in 641ce allowed invading Arab armies to move beyond the Lower Nile region of Egypt and ultimately conquer the whole of the province from the Byzantines, effectively ending centuries of almost totally uninterrupted Roman rule. The paper examines this pivotal moment in Islamic history in order to identify four salient features of early Islamic expansion: the struggle of the early caliphate for power and authority; the role of religion; the development of an organized and effective military; the nature of early Islamic approaches to warfare and foreign policy.
