This study examines the efficacy of archaeological interpretation of ethnicity within the confines of nineteenth-century material culture available from the New York State Museum’s archaeology collection and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Cultural Resource Information System. The goals of this evaluation are to discuss the limits of archaeological interpretation of ethnicity, the utility of material indications of racism in the archaeological record, and the archaeological footprint of immigrant groups by considering the economic development history of New York State. From the modern protests of the Dakota Access Pipeline to feuding between village dwelling horticulturalists, there is a long history of conflict along the banks of the Missouri River. This dissertation aims to investigate the interplay between the unique landscape of the semi-arid river valley and the continuing influx of culturally diverse people moving to the region, specifically, the semi-sedentary hunting farmers living in the Middle Missouri division of the North American Great Plains, between A.D. 1000 and 1750. Sovereignty, a mechanism of power around which a state is organized, has emerged as a way to understand the twenty-first-century biopolitical moment. Thinkers including Michel Foucault, Michael Hardt, Antonio Negri, and Roberto Esposito find sovereignty essential to understanding modern regimes of bodily domination and control. These thinkers look back to early modern England as an originary moment when older theories of sovereign power became attached to emerging modern political systems. The Soconusco region of Chiapas, Mexico, where the sites of Miguel Alemán, the Conquista Campesina Complex (Conq-18) and the Piñuela Complex (PIN) are located, has been an object of study by archaeologists since the beginning of the nineteenth century. My project focused at this locale is concerned with craft production as related to the organization and the development of hierarchical social relations and how this relationship is reflected through diverse indexes. Although Plumbate ceramics are my principal source of information, I studied other ceramic types as well.

The development of agriculture and its spread around the globe is one of the most consequential events in the history of our species. The transition to agriculture is associated with many cultural developments, such as craft specialization, urbanization, and the creation of social hierarchies. Many social theorists believe that these changes associated with the adoption of farming were beneficial to the human condition, however, not all agree. In this study, I examine the emergence of social complexity during the Prehistoric Bronze Age (c. 2400-1750 B.C.) on the Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus through a systematic program of organic residue analysis. I define a model based on the theoretical concept of the feast in conjunction with a product-centered approach that aims to identity a range of prestigious products, including perfumes, medicines, and psychoactive substances, that have been preserved in ceramic containers using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Borrowed from the field of biology, geometric morphometric analysis has been recently applied to lithic assemblages with great success. This paper discusses the results of a 2D morphometric analysis of triangle points from the Mohawk Valley, New York, the staple point form of the late pre-contact period. This morphometric approach, which uses outline data extracted from high-resolution photos of the projectile points, leverages multivariate statistical analysis to visualize intra-type variation present in the collection. Change in shape (via length-width ratios) has been previously documented for this collection, but this new application of morphometrics results is a more nuanced look into …

In the study of ancient empires, models are needed to identify the material correlates of different types of interactions that bind imperial systems. This study focuses on the investigation of political domination in provincial areas. The Teotihuacan Empire dominated the political and economic systems within and around the Basin of Mexico from AD 200-650. There are many studies on the core polity of Teotihuacan and its surrounding area, yet intensive archaeological studies of Teotihuacan's periphery are needed to understand the organizational complexity of the empire.
