Mic Check : Finding Hip Hop's Place In The Literary Milieu, Victorio Reyes

The study of Hip Hop poetics has been slowly gaining momentum as an area for scholarly inquiry. Accordingly, Mic Check rests on one critical assumption: Hip Hop is the most significant American form of poetry ever invented. To back up this claim, this project investigates Hip Hop lyricism from five critical angles: tradition, form, tone, medium, and practice. I argue that music’s foundational position in African American literature clarifies Hip Hop’s experiments with language, which operate within and extend an ongoing, centuries-old tradition of linguistic, rhythmic, and poetic experimentation. H.D. and Denise Levertov, two visionary poets of the twentieth century, represent both female poets’ awakening of political and historical consciousness and their engagement with the poetics of vulnerability and survival. H.D. and Levertov offer lyrical visions that dismantle the binaries of real and unreal, earthly and transcendent, and individual and communal. The subject of this project is visionary imagination and its various reverberations, limitations, and potentialities. This thesis is an exploration of the language of food and drink in the letters and poetry of John Keats. In sifting through his letters, famous for his unselfconscious thoughts on the nature of poetry and poetic composition, it is possible to construct the details of his culinary life not only as it pertains to daily eating habits but also in how he uses the language of food to articulate the sensations achieved in the course of writing and reading poetry. Making Thought Matter: Postmodern Models for Material Thinking, crosses disciplines to trace the aesthetic contexts of Postmodern American artists whose work employs the senses to make legible creative and critical modes of synthesis. I contend that in practicing a material thinking—the artistic mobilization of the intimate and affective qualities of conceptual and physical surfaces—these artists reinsert perceptual knowledge and bodily agency into Postmodernism’s “emptied” surfaces. Consequently, their work opposes late theorists of Postmodernity who characterized contemporary artistic forms as immaterial, abstract, and emotionally deficient. Critique is Not Enough: The Empirical Imperatives of Innovative American Poetryproposes that innovative modern and early contemporary American poetries redefine the relation of knowledge, consciousness, and poetic performance to lived experience. This study demonstrates how the radically different poetic projects of Walt Whitman, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and Charles Olson not only equally insist upon empirically investigative poetics, but also endeavor, each to each, to individualize their poetic methodologies, which thus challenges the generalized Enlightenment myth of rationality. "Queer Creatures, Queer Times" makes a critical intervention in queer theory and queer poetics through a combination of critical and creative approaches to explore how posthumanist thought and animal studies might correct a blindspot in current critical work on queer experience and texts. Queer theory tends to neglect non/human subjects, yet an ecological and posthumanist critique helps to trouble its humanist bias as well as its overly neat ties to constructivist and performative notions of selfhood. This dissertation is concerned with how language mediates the relationship between self and other, and in particular, mythopoetic language. The political potential of myth has long been condemned, so much so that the word "myth" is now synonymous with "false." I argue that this is a result of what I term as heroic mythopoesis wherein the relationship between self and other is predicated on a violent separation that reinforces conceptions of identity. In contrast, in what I term as trans-relational mythopoesis this relationship is contingent on an embodied exposure between self and other that reciprocally translates and transforms conceptions of …

This thesis is a study in the constructs of H.D.'s poetry, and how they work in relation to the reader. Specifically, H.D.'s concern was creating a sense of freedom for her readers as a means to representation and identity. To achieve this state of consciousness, H.D. began by exploring the sacredness within nature. In the process of articulating her idea into a more exact form she turned her focus towards gender. By removing the objective aesthetics surrounding women, H.D. developed a gender authority. Through this authority she continued her quest for freedom and, in doing so, instilled a sense of …

Named by the Black Panther Party as the Year of the Panther, 1969 was one of the organization's most tumultuous years. Working harder than ever since the Party's formation in 1966, men and women of the Party sought to demonstrate their dominance in the "sphere of revolutionary politics". With increased efforts, came an increase in opposing forces against the Party, resulting in the death, imprisonment, and exile of a number of the Party's male leaders. This thesis will attempt to illustrate a connection between both the creative and trying experiences of certain natural scientists surrounding their discoveries and Rilke's vision of poetry. It will explore the implications of Rilke's figure of Orpheus, which has been characterized in part as a symbol for art's "search in which something essential is at stake" (Blanchot 215), on the poetic potential of those whose perception is grounded in the psychology of modern scientific discovery and theory; In other words, how a scientist comes to make the turn which takes them from "the work" to "the work of art".

Although Hanni Ossott (1946-2002) is considered a unique voice in Venezuelan poetry, no comprehensive studies of her work have yet been undertaken. This dissertation offers a critical reading of the poetry from her early and mid career, a period that encompasses both her best known and least known work. "L'homme Ouvert" is a thesis that focuses on the translation of a full body of work by the poet Jean Sénac. Jean Sénac was a French-Algerian poet of the mid-20th century. He was a French-speaking Pied-noir homosexual whose life and poetry revolved around the facets of his complex identity and the search for a way to unify those different parts together into a greater, comprehensive whole. This thesis also discusses the poet's origins and how they affect his work, in addition to situating him and his work within his time as modernist, queer, post-colonial minor literature.

An Experience with Language is a collection of genres designed to incorporate modern-day conversational language and slang for the purpose of tempting young adults into partaking in an involvement in reading--from Young Adult literature to the classic canonical texts. After having encountered numerous adolescents who claim to "not read"--a statement implying not that they are illiterate, but rather have little to no interest in reading--I wondered what, exactly, was contributing to this growing, nation-wide apathy towards literature.
