I could say that I run because it makes me feel good, or that I run to lose weight and to look better. I could even tell you that when I run I get more oxygen to my brain and that consequently I am more mentally alert, or that I run because John doesn't. But when I am completely honest with myself, I have to admit that I run to stay ahead of time.

The last pylon was almost home. Tom drove it through the top, softer layers of dirt pretty smoothly. Just before it caught, it rammed into something. What, Tom didn't know, and the machine kicked back hard on him. The handle on the driver caught his left hand. He bit his lip. He would've screamed if there'd been time. But it all moved that fast. When he finally freed his hand he was surprised at the way it looked. The whole thing was light blue and the thumb didn't have any skin on it. It was bent the wrong way. He …

One Saturday they took the bus up to Oxford Street again. They had been avoiding it for two weeks. Marva saw a stop she liked and just climbed out. She headed through the snow leaving footprints for Benny to follow. She knew he would eventually catch up.

In the winter before I turned twenty, I drove to Oregon to see a friend. Tasha lived with her mother in a farmhouse in Corvalis. She studied Greek and Latin. I pulled onto their property late at night, bouncing in the deep-rutted roads and wondering if I were honorable. Tasha was not really a friend; she was a girl who was pretty and who talked with me over lunch. I was bringing her a Greek Bible from San Francisco. She had wanted it for two years, and I wanted to see her.

Mindy Golden sat to the side of my desk, covering her mouth with her hand, I told her to be still so I could draw her. I was going to draw everyone in the class. Thinking of accordian photograph holders that cascade out of proud parents' wallets, displaying all the children and grandchildren at once, I taped eighteen pieces of paper together, end to end. Mindy's picture was the second one down. Carolyn's was already finished. Bernie Volosky was next. Looking at Mindy, I noticed that her nose was longer than Caroline's and that her hair was thinner. "Don't worry," …

For a long time I hated him, although I did not know Rene that well. On my previous visits to Mexico City, I only saw and talked to him briefly. He was a bohemian, a bizarre fellow, and certainly not one of my favorite cousins. He was always involved in some leftist political movement. He began by joining a Catholic youth organization; then he joined the Socialist party, and most recently he had been elected to the board of a newly formed Communist party. He dropped out of school, earned his living playing protest songs at the regular hangouts for …

Taborah, in one end of the tub, washed and sang, "Mummy is the root of all evil." "Money, money," her mother said, "Mummy is easier for me," Taborah said. She pulled her hand out of the bubbles and stretched her legs. She sang, "Won't contaminate myself with it. Take it away, take it away, take it away." She climbed out of the tub.

At a party recently, concentrating on a fudge brownie, I was asked who the youngest sister in the Brady Bunch was. I know every episode of the silly sitcom: I can tell you how Bobby got Joe Namath to play football with him; I can tell you where Jan's white mouse ended up after it chewed its way out of the hamper; I can tell you what Alice does at night after taking off her maid's apron, and when Carol got a shag haircut, and why Marcia joined all those clubs at school. So why, that night, did the little …
