Writing The History Of Canadian Parks: Past, Present, And Future, Alan Maceachern

This paper discusses the state of historical writing on Canadian national parks. It traces writing in the field since 1968, arguing that there are still many and sizable gaps in the literature. It then outlines some themes in parks history which deserve more attention today, and which might assist the management of parks in the future. Finally, it suggests reasons to believe that an upsurge of writing may well be imminent.

Historical and literary studies of the history of the book and of reading habits in modern Anglo-American history tend to approach their subject either from the perspective of readers and publishers or from that of authors. The former works constitute a nascent historiography, addressing the problem of how the material book was used to create and replicate culture; the latter studies are more concerned with how literary authors used texts to influence and negotiate culture. "Keep On Keeping On": African Americans And The Implementation Of Brown V. Board Of Education In Virginia, Brian J. Daugherity

This chapter examines African American efforts to implement the Brown decision in Virginia. While considering how government officials, segregationist organizations, and white supporters influenced the implementation process, this study focuses on how the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and its supporters in Virginia sought to bring about school desegregation in the state. Blending African American, southern, legal, and civil rights history, the story sheds new light on the school desegregation process and the early years of the civil rights movement in Virginia.
