This collection contains six newspapers from West Virginia, Virginia, and New York documenting historic events that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement, specifically during the March on Washington on August 29, 1963 and the events that occurred after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968.

This collection contains the personal, educational, and professional possessions of Mildred Mitchell-Bateman. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper articles, association newsletters, professional planners, financial documents, plaques, and other personal memorabilia. The materials document Bateman’s various roles within local, state, and national psychology and psychiatric organizations. The collection is organized into six series: Series 1, Personal; Series 2, Education; Series 3, Professional Experience; Series 4, Correspondence; Series 5, Associations; and Series 6, Bound Books, Bound Volumes and list of Newspapers.

Established in 1955, the Huntington, West Virginia chapter of The Links, Incorporated is a women’s volunteer organization that works to support culture, education, health and wellness for seniors, adults, and youth in the African American community. The national Links, Incorporated organization, founded in 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, oversees four regional areas, including the Central Area, which consists of 69 Links chapters in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, programs, books, financial documents, publications, newsletters, plaques, certificates, a diary, and a jewelry box. The materials document Garrison’s various roles on the local and national levels of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as well as her participation in other civil rights activities.

Individuals mentioned in the collection include Thomas M. Shelton, John M. Rece, and James C. Wilson, Celia (no age listed, 1854 document), Minerva (18 years old?, 1842 document), and Edmund (13 years old, 1854 document).

The manuscript, titled “The Livisay Family of Wayne County,” covers the Livisay family from 1860 until 1991, beginning with William Henry Livisay and Margaret Livisay.

Carrie Eldridge is a genealogical researcher in Chesapeake, Ohio. This collection contains photocopies of many county record books of the Appalachian areas of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, ranging from the American Revolution until the early twentieth century. It also contains her personal research files on topics related to slavery and the Underground Railroad in Ohio and West Virginia as well as local history topics such as church and family histories.

Huntington, West Virginia, public school teacher; member of Carter G. Woodson Memorial Committee. This collection is composed of two plaques, one from the First Baptist Church of Huntington on March 31, 1984, and the second from the Black History Month Committee at Marshall in 1986. The bulk of Mrs. Fairfax' papers went to West Virginia State College, Institute, West Virginia.

Assorted records of the county and circuit courts discarded when the old courthouse was razed, ca. 1955. Included are estate appraisals, school house plans, wolf scalp claims and oaths of allegiance. Also included in this collection is accession 0473, composed of photo reproduction of marriages, 1806-1850, and the Register of Free Negroes, 1838-1860.

Papers consist primarily of diaries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, genealogies and photographs of five families: the Glanville-Carter families of St. Louis, Mo.; the Whittakers of Preble County, Ohio; Dorothy Whittaker Atkins of Huntington, West Virginia.; and the Heacocks of Bucks County, Penna.

A significant part of the collection are the diaries of Annie Heacock, a teacher at the Penn School for freed slaves in Beaufort, South Carolina, 1864-1869. Other diaries include the Civil War diary of John Whittaker, a surgeon in the 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

This collection consists of a minute book for the Parkersburg Colored Civic Welfare League covering the period from 1932-1934, a letter of thanks from a League-funded college student in Florida with 1932 minutes on the back, Virgie Giles membership card to the Ohio Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, an invitation to a charity ball, and a card announcing the opening of Giles’ “La Giles Beauty Parlor” in Parkersburg.
