This collection is comprised of items related to the State of Alabama. The items are in a variety of formats, including pamphlets, brochures, clippings, postcards, correspondence, magazines, and more. These items run the gamut as far as their content and have been organized roughly by category. The items originated with the Library’s vertical file, which was culled and the majority of items discarded in 2020. Items related to Alabama and items deemed of significant historical interest were retained and added to the Library’s Special Collections. This collection contains miscellaneous literary works by Alabama authors and biographical information about them. For the purposes of this collection, “Alabama author” can include those born in other states who published works while living in Alabama. Types of works include poetry, short stories, essays, articles, song lyrics, etc. In some cases brief biographies have been compiled or newspaper clippings are included with the works; with some only a bibliography and brief biographical information is provided. This collection is comprised of printed copies of speeches and addresses given by Alabamians. The collection was put together by Dr. Alta Millican, Dean of Library Science, Communication and Instructional Media (retired 1986), most probably at the behest of Dr. Ernest Stone, University President at the time, and contains speeches sent to her by Dr. Stone as well as those she collected herself. She labeled them “Important Speeches of Alabamians” and stored them in a vertical file. Dr. Stone referred to them as “Great Speeches by Great Alabamians” and noted in correspondence that the original idea was to laminate or …

This collection contains hand-annotated scripts, playbills, schedules for rehearsal/performance, congratulatory notes, and other materials related to plays performed by JSU’s Department of Theatre and Film (formerly the Drama Department). The materials were compiled by Dr. Steven J. Whitton, Professor Emeritus of English at JSU (English Department faculty 1973-2017) and represent productions in which he acted and/or directed. The scripts contain his notes regarding the productions.
Some of these materials have been digitized and are available through the JSU Department of Theatre & Film Production Archive.

This collection contains a chronological listing of all plays performed at Jacksonville State University, as far as known, from 1947 to the present. Materials created for these productions and donated to the Library by the Department of Theatre & Film (formerly the Drama Department) include photographs, slides, playbills, posters, flyers, and other materials. The bulk of the original collection materials date from the 1980s to the early 2000s.
Supplementary digital items were also shared with the Library (eg, digital image files), and the Library acquired other digital images from the Photographic Services Department in order to build a more complete …

This collection contains framed prints created by local artist Larry K. Martin. Martin is a native of Alabama and holds a Ph.D. from Tulane University. He pursued a career in tropical medicine, having researched at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and in the field in the Amazon rainforests of Colombia and Brazil. He eventually began to work in wildlife conservation, and was the curator of the Anniston Museum of Natural History. He began painting circa 1976, primarily using soft acrylics. This finding aid references the papers (primarily correspondence, but also other materials) of John Henry Caldwell, member of the Alabama House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives (1873-1877). Many of the letters were written between Caldwell and his wife while he was away serving in the 10th Alabama Regiment during the Civil War. The bulk of the collection has been digitized and is available through the Library's Digital Collections, and the original materials are located in the Library's Alabama Gallery Special Collections.

This collection contains documentation and a pop-up exhibit (banners relating to presidential history) created for the inauguration of JSU’s 13th President, Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. (appointed president 2019), which occurred on 9 April 2021. Killingsworth attended JSU as a student, graduating in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in geography and in 2001 with a master’s in counseling. He received his Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama in 2016.
Killingsworth began working at JSU in 2002 as Coordinator of Academic Advisement. He was appointed Director of Government Relations and later Chief External Affairs Officer. He …

This collection contains documentation related to the inauguration of JSU’s 11th President, Dr. William Arthur Meehan (president 1999-2015), which occurred on 7 February 2000. Meehan attended Jacksonville State University as a student, graduating in 1976 with a degree in biology. He began his career in 1977 teaching anatomy and biology at JSU; Meehan later rose through several different positions with the University, including Associate Vice-president for Academic and Student Affairs, before being named president in 1999.

This collection contains documentation related to the inauguration of JSU’s 10th President, Dr. Harold Johnston McGee (1937-2012, president 1986-1999), which occurred on 20 October 1986. McGee was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, received his bachelor degree from Old Dominion University, and master and doctoral degrees in counseling from the University of Virginia. Prior to assuming the presidency at JSU, he held various positions, including Vice-president for Administrative Affairs at James Madison University.
McGee’s administration was noted for a 30% enrollment increase, an increase in JSU’s accredited programs, $50 million in capital improvements, and the formulation of the University’s first capital …

This collection contains correspondence, receipts, dissertation information, speeches, clippings and other miscellaneous materials from Claude Rodolphus (C.R.) Wood (1892-1981), first academic dean of Jacksonville State Normal School. Wood graduated from the Sixth District Agricultural School in Hamilton, Alabama, and went on to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1910. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1912 and a Master of Science in 1914; he also spent some time as a summer school student in 1915 at the University of Alabama. This collection contains photographic prints, newspaper clippings, conference programs, photocopies from various sources, military records, booklets, original essays, and more most likely compiled by Ralph Rogers Wheeler (1918-2004), an Alabama native. Items relate to Wheeler’s life and especially his military service and time as a Japanese prisoner of war. Beginning in 1942, he was first housed in a prison camp in the Philippines, and then sent via ship to a prison camp near Osaka, Japan. He was rescued in 1945 after Japan’s surrender. Ricardo Palma (1833-1919) was a literary figure in Peru as well as a leader in culture and politics. He played a role in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), in the rebuilding of the National Library of Peru destroyed in that war, and in the founding of the Peruvian Academy of Language. His principal work, the Tradiciones Peruanas, was read widely throughout Iberian America and influenced writing styles. The Wilder/Dargent Collection assembles all of the published writings of Palma, either as facsimiles of first editions or as later republications. The collection of the YWCA of Brooklyn contains materials from the organization since its opening in 1888, until the records were transferred to Brooklyn College in 2010. These records span nearly 125 years, and include documents related to administration, governance, finance, legal cases, facilities, security, educational and health programs, publications, IT and telecommunications, public relations, events, photographs, newspaper clippings, multi-media, and ephemera.
