The Wind: An Unruly Living, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer Dec 2018

The Wind: An Unruly Living, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

A process begun in Pisa, Italy in April of 2016 during a workshop on political theory in the Anthropocene, The Wind ~ An Unruly Living is a philosophical exercise (askêsis, translated, following Ignatius of Loyola, as “spiritual exercise”). In his exercise, Bendik-Keymer throws to the void: the ideology of self-ownership from a society of possession. By using the Stoic kanôn, the rule of living by phûsis, he follows an element. Unhappily for the Stoic and happily for us, the wind is unruly. A swerve of currents through a social fabric, it’s full of holes, all holely. Stretch …

On Affect: Function And Phenomenology, Andreas Elpidorou Dec 2018

On Affect: Function And Phenomenology, Andreas Elpidorou

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the nature of emotions by considering what appear to be two differing, perhaps even conflicting, approaches to affectivity—an evolutionary functional account, on the one hand, and a phenomenological view, on the other. The paper argues for the centrality of the notion of function in both approaches, articulates key differences between them, and attempts to understand how such differences can be overcome.

Bridging Rhetoric And Pragmatics With Relevance Theory, Brian N. Larson Sep 2018

Bridging Rhetoric And Pragmatics With Relevance Theory, Brian N. Larson

Faculty Scholarship

In this chapter, I bridge rhetoric and pragmatics, both of which concern themselves with language-in-use and meaning-making beyond formal syntax and semantics. Previous efforts to link these fields have failed, but Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory (RT), an approach to experimental pragmatics grounded in cognitive science, offers the bridge. I begin by reviewing Gricean pragmatics and its incompatibility with rhetoric and cognitive science. I then sketch RT, but importantly, I identify revisions to RT that make it a powerful tool for rhetorical analysis, a cognitive pragmatic rhetorical (CPR) theory. CPR theory strengthens RT by clarifying what it means to be …

A ;-) At The Past And Future Of English, Tiffany Li Jul 2018

A ;-) At The Past And Future Of English, Tiffany Li

Faculty Scholarship

It is always with a certain amount of wry, knowing amusement that we turn to the thoughts of people from the past remarking on the future (that is, our present). It is similar to how slightly older children view slightly younger children. They were so innocent then, those thinkers of the past! Look at what they thought computers could do, what language could be! How adorably naïve! Not like us, we who have put away our childish things.

Of course, the science fiction of our present may someday seem as pathetically misconceived as that of the past. So, too, will …

'Smarks': Kynical Engagement And Coalitional Fandom Of Professional Wrestling, Andrew Zolides May 2018

'Smarks': Kynical Engagement And Coalitional Fandom Of Professional Wrestling, Andrew Zolides

Faculty Scholarship

Conflict in professional wrestling is not limited to the performers in the ring, as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and other promotions have toxic fan practices borne out of their varied engagements with the wrestling texts. Conflicting reactions to performers and storylines speak to a larger divide within the professional wrestling community exemplified by ‘smarks’: industry-savvy fans whose knowledge of backstage dealings impacts their perceptions of the product. In analyzing smarks, I employ Peter Sloterdijk’s conception of kynicism, distinguished from cynicism by an attitude of cheekiness that enables the user to subvert hegemonic idealism through a particular performance. In his words …

Mythic Quest In Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde, Graley Herren Apr 2018

Mythic Quest In Bob Dylan's Blonde On Blonde, Graley Herren

Faculty Scholarship

Blonde on Blonde epitomizes Bob Dylan’s debts to the classics. The album depicts the mythic quest of a hipster-hero descending into the Underworld in pursuit of the Muse. The hero resembles Dylan but is augmented by the experiences of mythic figures like Orpheus and Odysseus. The singer encounters bizarre figures and wanders in exile through the “Lowlands” searching for the goddess—a figure inspired by Sara Dylan, but also a composite of the White Goddess, Persephone, Eurydice, and others. Dylan’s mythic adaptations are also informed by the syncretic work of T.S. Eliot, Joseph Campbell, and Robert Graves.

Tyrannick Faith: Martyr Drama, The Heroic Mode, And Dryden’S Tyrannick Love, Geremy Carnes Apr 2018

Tyrannick Faith: Martyr Drama, The Heroic Mode, And Dryden’S Tyrannick Love, Geremy Carnes

Faculty Scholarship

Religious uniformity (as promulgated under the 1662 Act of Uniformity and later renewals of the act) was Restoration England’s chief strategy for addressing the nation’s deep religious divisions. The ultimate failure of the Stuart monarchy may be attributed in part to the failure of this strategy, which kept alive the wounds of the Civil War and amplified political dissent. Recognizing the dangers that uniformity posed to their reigns, the Stuart kings often pursued other strategies, including toleration (which they attempted to grant in 1660, 1672, and 1687, with increasingly disastrous results). As their poet laureate, John Dryden also explored the …

Rock Island Revisited: Black Hawk’S Life, Keokuk’S Oratory, And The Critique Of Us Indian Policy, Frank Kelderman Apr 2018

Rock Island Revisited: Black Hawk’S Life, Keokuk’S Oratory, And The Critique Of Us Indian Policy, Frank Kelderman

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the writings and oratory of the Sauk tribal leaders Keokuk and Black Hawk in the context of Indian diplomacy at Rock Island Indian agency. While Black Hawk's autobiography Life of Mà-ka-tai-me-she-kià-kiàk (1833) is widely read today, Keokuk's oratory has typically been dismissed as an accommodationist extension of US governmental discourses, as op-posed to Black Hawk's rhetoric of resistance and criticism of the Black Hawk War. Complicating these historical narratives, this article argues that both Black Hawk and Keokuk produced collaborative publications that in similar ways critiqued the management of Indian affairs within networks of Indian agents, traders, …

Review: Brokering Tareas: Mexican Immigrant Families Translanguaging Homework Literacies And Community Literacies En Confianza: Learning From Bilingual After- School Programs By Steven Alvarez, Megan Faver Hartline, Amber Montalvo

Faculty Scholarship

Steven Alvarez’s commitment to understanding the complex challenges faced by emerging bilingual (or multilingual) students and their families is easily seen through his two recently published books, Brokering Tareas: Mexican Immigrant Families Translanguaging Homework Literacies (2017a) and Community Literacies en Confianza: Learning from Bilingual After-School Programs (2017b). Alvarez’s dual studies of after-school programs in New York City and Lexington, Kentucky provide deep insight into the educational challenges emerging bilingual students face in and out of the classroom, as well as how to form relationships between students, parents, teachers, and other mentors that can help students succeed.

Research And Rhetorical Purpose: Using Genre Analysis To Understand Source Use In Technical And Professional Writing, Lee-Ann K. Breuch, Brian N. Larson Jan 2018

Research And Rhetorical Purpose: Using Genre Analysis To Understand Source Use In Technical And Professional Writing, Lee-Ann K. Breuch, Brian N. Larson

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter describes a pilot study of student research-based writing in a technical and professional writing course designed for college-level juniors and seniors across the curriculum; fifteen analytical research papers are coded based on the rhetorical move John Swales (1990) calls "reference to previous research" to increase our understanding of how students use sources to introduce, support, or compare/ contrast ideas and previous research. Student papers in this study overwhelmingly used sources to support main ideas, occasionally used sources to introduce ideas, often in the form of topic sentences, but rarely used sources to compare/ contrast ideas. The frequency of …

The Mystery Of God And Suffering, Kenneth R. Overberg S.J. Jan 2018

The Mystery Of God And Suffering, Kenneth R. Overberg S.J.

Faculty Scholarship

Suffering surrounds us, leading to questions about a good and gracious God. This article emphasizes a less-well-known perspective on the life, suffering, and death of Jesus that grounds a threefold response to suffering of lament, action, and trust. God does not desire suffering but works to overcome it. Christians are an Easter people, trusting that good overcomes evil, that life overcomes death.

Libranth: Nicholas Branch's Joycean Labyrinth In Don Delillo's Libra, Graley Herren Jan 2018

Libranth: Nicholas Branch's Joycean Labyrinth In Don Delillo's Libra, Graley Herren

Faculty Scholarship

Libra is a metafictional labyrinth. CIA historian Nicholas Branch is not only a character in the novel but also the embedded author of the narrative. James Joyce used this autological approach in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Libra replicates this metafictional structure, borrowing a number of themes and motifs from Stephen Dedalus and the mythical artificer Daedalus along the way. Although Dedalus succeeds in using his art as wings to escape his imprisonment, Branch ultimatley fails. The artifice he creates becomes his metafictional prison.

From Taquería To Medical School: Juan Carlos, Aristotle, Cognitive Enhancements, And A Good Life, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo Jan 2018

From Taquería To Medical School: Juan Carlos, Aristotle, Cognitive Enhancements, And A Good Life, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo

Faculty Scholarship

This paper begins with a vignette of Juan Carlos, an immigrant to America who works to support his family, attends classes at a community college, and cares for his ill daughter. It argues that an Aristotelian virtue ethicist could condone a safe, legal, and virtuous use of cognitive enhancements in Juan Carlos’s case. The argument is that if an enhancement can lead him closer to eudaimonia (i.e., flourishing, or a good life), then it is morally permissible to use it. The paper closes by demonstrating how common objections to cognitive enhancement fail to undermine Juan Carlos’s justifiable use of the …

Translinguality And Disciplinary Reinvention, Bruce Horner Jan 2018

Translinguality And Disciplinary Reinvention, Bruce Horner

Faculty Scholarship

Dominant narratives of disciplinarity that WAC/WID confronts conflate disciplines with departments and material institutional structures, such as departments and professional organizations—what is here called “departmentality.” The relative autonomy of disciplinarity from departmentality means that challenges to foundational concepts of disciplines are in fact normal to disciplinary work and do not threaten the material institutional structures associated with those disciplines, as illustrated by the history of challenges to foundational disciplinary concepts of basic writing and second language acquisition carried out in disciplinary writing. The relative autonomy of disciplinarity enables us to accept the legitimacy of the challenges translingual theory poses to …
