The American literary canon has undergone revision and expansion in recent years, and our notions of the 19th-century renaissance have been reevaluated. Mainstream anthologies have been revised to reflect the expanding literary canon, yet resources for readers have remained widely scattered. This book expands earlier definitions of the 19th-century American Renaissance as represented by canonical writers such as Emerson and Poe, covering writers who published popular fiction and dominated the literary marketplace of the day. Some posit today that colleges and universities—small or large, public or private, Christian or secular—educate people for upward mobility, alienate people from their local habitation, and encourage the vandalism of the earth. In short, they argue that education is in many respects education for global homelessness. Steven Bouma-Prediger and Brian Walsh agree. In this article they examine these claims, set forth an alternative vision of education, and describe some of the implications of a biblically informed vision.
