La Sangre Llama, Alicia Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

LA SANGRE LLAMA is an exhibition of paintings featuring works by Alicia Perez. The series of paintings are acrylic on canvas all 24" x 36", and explore the contemporary Latino immigrant experience that often involves instability, acculturation, and loss of identity. The attire found on the subjects all vary in patterns and colors to represent different nationalities that fall under the umbrella of Hispanic Culture. Intentionally concealed faces in the paintings emphasize the belief that many Hispanic immigrants are frequently viewed as stereotypes, rather than individuals. LA SANGRE LLAMA, which translates to "the blood beckons," affirms the notion that regardless …

A Search For Balance, Scott Matthew Brown May 2012

A Search For Balance, Scott Matthew Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Art is contemplation. It is the pleasure of the mind which searches into nature and which there defines the spirit of which nature herself is animated" (Auguste Rodin). My intention as a sculptor is to explore the intersection between nature and industry. I seek to find a balance between the industrial (steel) and the natural (stone). Steel represents societal obligations. Stone (river rock) is specific to place and representative of family. With these juxtaposed elements I strive to create sculptural forms of wonder and contemplation. I attempt to interpret and understand my involvement with the complex world through the process …

Behind The Mask Of Time: Memory And Loss As Evolutionary Forces Upon Memory, Tommy Bartolillo Jan 2012

Behind The Mask Of Time: Memory And Loss As Evolutionary Forces Upon Memory, Tommy Bartolillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past decade, I've been developing a body of work based on the concept of time, in all of its various forms. My medium varies, but my work maintains its steady, overarching philosophies and core aesthetics. The ideas of entropy, growth, decay, evolution, arrested development, fragmented memories, and fugue states; all are considered through a personal filter that borders upon the dark and macabre.

Given: F(A Great Love + A Missing Body), Emily Anne Barnes Jan 2012

Given: F(A Great Love + A Missing Body), Emily Anne Barnes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given: f(A great love + A missing body) is a collection of poems in four sections that takes love and mathematics at its core. The lyric and narrative poems navigate an affair between a female narrator and her lover. The math is positioned with the verse in the way an ekphrastic poem might be positioned next to the art upon which it is based. The connection and alienation of the form fractures the poem, but it also serves as a metaphor for the competing forces of two people in love. And the goal of each is pursuit of the sublime. …

Picking Up The Pieces, Michael Presley Satterfield Jan 2012

Picking Up The Pieces, Michael Presley Satterfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over time wooden and metal objects, such as utility poles, construction lumber, parts from cars, trucks, farm equipment, and heavy machinery, and even an old abandoned car, have become unserviceable and discarded. Lying useless until discovered by the creative explorer, they are reclaimed and become precious raw materials in an artistic project. This body of work is about our ability to pick up the pieces after a time of being at a low point in life. It is about being uplifted by a companion, memory, or idea to a better state of mind or place. The materials I choose for …

Journey, Hosik Kim

My ceramic sculptures are about my story as well as the stories of all of us. Through these children that were born from clay, I find myself remembering and returning to the long journey that I have been walking all along. Memories are often the inspiration for my work, whether they are good or bad. In Korean, we call this [Special characters omitted]. I preserve these memories by carving into the surface of the clay, revealing a tattoo-like effect. I tried to make my own tattoos through my artwork because tattoos have a story and stay forever. My thesis speaks …

Liminal Space, Sara Beth Truman Jan 2012

Liminal Space, Sara Beth Truman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Liminal Space is an installation that records time between my son's removal from my life and present day. These pieces are the manifestation of hope and loss; they tell the story of my experience of motherhood. They track time through the repetition of form and have become a physical expression of the days that have elapsed in my life since I last saw my son. Liminal space is defined as the space in-between a boundary or a threshold. In this work, I pose the questions: Can liminal space be crossed? How large can this space become? In anthropology, liminality is …
