Visibility, Jamie Valdez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
I am a woman, activist, artist, mother, and wife. My art practice questions the role of
institutions in disseminating outdated traditions and unfair rituals in relation to women. Bringing
visibility to what is ignored, I create works that are critical to the unfair expectations that society
fosters, expectations which ultimately oppress women vis- -vis the (art) institution. Through
different conceptual strategies, my work questions what society has taught us about gender
roles and explores the pedagogies that our institutionalized education has systematically
perpetuated for women and girls from early educational experiences.
Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto
Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Human communication requires the disciplines regarding physical fitness, codified language, and the performing arts to overlap, and exist symbiotically. Within the realm of artistic performance, the three disciplines working together deliver a deliberate message in a way unique to performing artists. The general tendency to compartmentalize sports, communication, and the performing arts into their pigeonhole categories of Kinesiology, Linguistics, and Theatre Arts is impractical, particularly for performing artists simply because all of the disciplines are mutually dependent in the context of all kinesthetic communications.
The purpose of this paper is to define and discuss several concepts and the ways in …
Selfie-Portrait, John Shield, John Shield
Selfie-Portrait, John Shield, John Shield
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The selfie has become the currency of today; boldly stating: I was here, this is how I felt, and, most importantly, I exist.
This has become our self-reflection. Exploring the self-portrait, as have countless artists of the past, Johnny Shield uses the various selfies as reference for his sculptural works - both empty vessels and sculptural busts. Made from glass these fragile objects are all doomed to break. You, the viewer, are witnessing a truly damned object: the central portrait uneasily rests on a pedestal that is actively electrolytically corroding. While on display, this pedestal will lean more and more …

The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking Multifarious Prose Performance, Alex Avila

The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking is a collection of multifarious prose performances recounting the historical, personal, social, political and cultural constructs of a city birthed by violence. This body of work is accompanied by video, audio, photography, and theatre performance texts. St. Mary’s Housing project, in the Bronx, is the foundation where most of this literary work takes place. The modern day Griot (storyteller) is a Poet, guiding his audience through the social inequalities and disparities that plague St. Mary’s community. The Poet shares personal traumatic insights while simultaneously utilizing writing as a form of survival to the conditions …
The Body As Border: El Cuerpo Como Frontera, Mayte Escobar
The Body As Border: El Cuerpo Como Frontera, Mayte Escobar
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Being First generation born Mexican American I am looking into the blend of the two cultures and the disparity between them. The border is the core of my investigation; by traveling across the border I have become conscious of the differences among both sides and duality within myself. My identity has developed from a synthesis of these two cultures, and my wok explores these two factions that cannot be one without the other. fusion is apparent in my self-portraits where I dress up with the colors from both sides of the border. But I also take a personal look into …
The Value Of Everything Is Nothing, Jason Dawes
The Value Of Everything Is Nothing, Jason Dawes
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Photography was my introduction into art. I gravitated toward portrait photography fairly quickly. I found the interaction between subject and photographer to be an intense moment in time. I began to push that intensity - through various non-traditional approaches, such as placing ads in the personals. It did not take long before I turned the camera on myself, creating self-portraits in the domestic setting. I began to play for the camera. I created various personas that placed myself in some gray area between masculinity and femininity. Shortly there after, I began working with collage. I found the formulas and rigidity …
