God's Not Dead, But Billy Graham Is: Media And Mourning In American Evangelicalism, Colleen Kirkland Rodgers
God's Not Dead, But Billy Graham Is: Media And Mourning In American Evangelicalism, Colleen Kirkland Rodgers
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This thesis traces the impact and legacy of American preacher Billy Graham through an analysis of his media in the 1950’s and 60’s and the mourning that followed his death in 2018. Considered one of the most important figures in Evangelicalism, Graham’s life and death are crucial to understanding the inner workings and motivations of evangelism in the U.S. during the post-war period and through the 21st century. Graham’s position as a preacher of world renown began after a series of successful “crusades,” large revivals held under tents or in arenas, in Los Angeles in 1949. Following his rise to …

Scheherazade At Ground Zero: Muslim Women’S Agency, Identity, And Space In Euro-America From The 1893 World’S Columbian Exposition To The Islamic State, Alexandra M. Brandon
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation examines three periods in Euro-American history that appear disparate but reflect the West’s changing relationship with the Islamic World and with Muslims, in particular with Muslim women, in Muslim-majority countries, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Specifically, this dissertation examines how Muslim women’s agency in the United States evolved from the erotic, provocative performance of the hootchy-kootchy at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition to the political and economic activism after post-September 11th, the Trump Era, and finally a different kind of agency through radicalization through the Islamic State (IS). The structure of this dissertation uses the voice …

The Art Of The Public Grovel: Sexual Scandal And The Rise Of Public Confession, Susan Wise Bauer
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Between 1969 and 2002, three American politicians (Edward Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton) and three ordained clergymen (Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and Cardinal Bernard Law) made public confessions of wrongdoing to national audiences. These public confessions reveal that Protestant religious culture, particularly the neoevangelical culture of the twentieth century, had changed the expectations of many who did not consider themselves within neoevangelicalism's sphere of influence. By tracing the historical development of public confession from its medieval roots to its use in twentieth-century entertainment programming, this dissertation shows that Protestant confessional practice affected both secular American political discourse and American …

A Study Exploring The Educational Needs Of African-American Pastors' Wives Within Baptist Congregations, Jocelyn Georgette Henry-Whitehead
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
For many years, the role of the pastor's wife has been an emerging role in American religious history (Sweet, 1983). While on their journey in building and nurturing their relationship with God, supporting their husbands, families, congregations, and communities, pastors' wives have experienced joys and blessings as well as challenges and issues. A tremendous joy for some pastors' wives has been the privilege, the opportunity, and the honor to serve, minister to, assist and care for others. However, one major challenge for many pastors' wives has been preparedness, or the lack of preparedness, knowledge, and instruction (Obleton, 1996). Wives of …

Religious Change And Plateau Indians: 1500 -1850, Larry Cebula
Religious Change And Plateau Indians: 1500 -1850, Larry Cebula
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study is an ethnohistorical examination of Indian religious responses to contact with Euroamericans on the Columbia Plateau, from 1600 to 1850. Plateau natives understood their encounter with European civilization primarily as a momentous spiritual event, and sought new sources of spiritual power to cope with their rapidly changing world. White people seemed to the Indians to have an abundance of spirit power, and many native religious efforts were aimed at capturing some of this power for themselves. These efforts included the protohistoric Prophet Dance, the syncretic "Columbian Religion" of the fur trade era, and the initial enthusiastic response to …

"Struck In Their Hearts": David Zeisberger's Moravian Mission To The Delaware Indians In Ohio, 1767-1808, Maia Turner Conrad
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In 1767 David Zeisberger began his Moravian mission to the Delaware Indians in Ohio. He led this mission until his death in 1808. While Zeisberger and his assistants required conformity in matters religious, the converts did not have to make enormous changes in their traditional beliefs. The Delaware converts also did not have to alter their traditional economic, medical, housing, and diplomatic practices.;The goal of this study is to understand why hundreds of Delawares chose to convert, and why as many more chose to live at the mission. Many Delawares hoped to return to the peaceful life they had previously …

Issues Of Power And Centrality In United Methodist Ministers' Occupational Activities: Implications For Professional Education, Richard Bruce Osmann
Issues Of Power And Centrality In United Methodist Ministers' Occupational Activities: Implications For Professional Education, Richard Bruce Osmann
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this interview based qualitative study was to explore the influence that a plurality of social contexts, represented through United Methodist congregations in the Virginia Conference, have on the formation of ministers' occupational activities.;The study used a typology developed by Larry Blazer (1987) to identify the occupational activities practiced by parish ministers. The investigation weighted clergy's professional practice using Judith Hackman's (1985) concepts of power and centrality in her study institutions of higher education's budgeting process. Congregational representatives identified occupational activities that were central and peripheral to their congregation's mission. Clergy identified the occupational activities that received more …
