An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
Bachelor of Divinity
Working with adults has proved to me an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This thesis is written with a desire to help give adults that which has proved to be a blessing to me and to fulfill in their lives this same joy which they may have never known.
The author does not pretend to be an authority on this subject matter, but is writing on adult confirmation materials merely because of his love in this field. Neither does he intend to exhaust all the material related to this paper, but merely to present an overview in order to evaluate some …
Areas Of Agreement In The Three World Conferences On Faith And Order, John George Huber
Areas Of Agreement In The Three World Conferences On Faith And Order, John George Huber
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the areas of agreement which have been achieved by the three World Conferences on Faith and Order. Interest in this problem stems from two existential situations. The first lies in the fact that the church body with which the writer is affiliated, the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, is not an active participant in the so-called ecumenical movement, as that movement finds its expression in the World Council of Churches. The reasons for this position which are most frequently cited fall under the broad category of "doctrine.” This Lutheran body, along with the other …
A Survey Of Problems Confronting The Christian Missionary To The Rural Areas Of Japan, Paul H. Pallmeyer Jr
A Survey Of Problems Confronting The Christian Missionary To The Rural Areas Of Japan, Paul H. Pallmeyer Jr
Bachelor of Divinity
In the following pages an attempt has been made to investigate these problems. No effort has been made to discuss the methods that have been used to deal with them, but where these problems have been solved or have been brought closer to solution owing to certain circumstances, the author has tried to take cognizance of this fact. This study cannot be exhaustive as will become apparent especially in Chapter IV, which deals with the religious life of the country people.
Advent-History, Meaning And Customs, John S. Damm
Advent-History, Meaning And Customs, John S. Damm
Bachelor of Divinity
I have tried in this thesis to examine the liturgical season of Advent and determine what some liturgical scholars and some ordinary people have conceived the main emphasis, moods and themes of this season to be.
Martin Luther The Formative Years, Erwin A. Gerken
Martin Luther The Formative Years, Erwin A. Gerken
Bachelor of Divinity
As one thinks of this great Reformer, this man of God, theologian, Bible translator, catechist, hymnist, bold champion of the freedom of the conscience, founder of the Lutheran Church, leader of the Reformation which carried Christendom back to the Bible - one hesitates to attempt to write a thesis on his formative years. Yet it is so arresting and inspiring, that in joy, yet with all humility, I shall attempt in the following pages to describe this man and trace his development in thought and life which led to the posting of the Ninety-five Theses on October 31, 1517.
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Bachelor of Divinity
The present thesis cannot do full justice to that comprehensive title for the simple reason that the field of form-criticism is far too broad and complex for the writer to treat it exhaustively in one paper. This thesis will attempt in part to delineate for the reader what form-criticism is and how it works.
Paul's Concept Of Christ As The Wisdom Of God, Bernhard Kurzweg
Paul's Concept Of Christ As The Wisdom Of God, Bernhard Kurzweg
Bachelor of Divinity
Our purpose, then, will be an objective comparison of the functions of Paul's Sophia with the personal Chokmah. The logos of John will frequently enter in by way of comparison. The close relationship between the three will be evident throughout.
Religious Attitudes In The Young Men As Encountered In The U S Army, Edward G. Deffner
Religious Attitudes In The Young Men As Encountered In The U S Army, Edward G. Deffner
Bachelor of Divinity
These pages represent the observations of an Army Chaplain. They state impressions formed over a protracted period and give certain conclusions based on these observations. It should be stated at the very beginning that no claim is made for infallibility, and it is recognized that some persons would debate some points, deny others. The very nature of the subject makes this inevitable. We are dealing with a subject in which statistics have little meaning. Personal observations and impressions may be questioned. In these chapters the writer claims only to present the subject as it appears to him, others may agree …
Contemporary Roman Catholic Reactions To The Lutheran Liturgical Movement, Irvin Arkin
Contemporary Roman Catholic Reactions To The Lutheran Liturgical Movement, Irvin Arkin
Bachelor of Divinity
The fundamental reason why this topic was chosen is a rather deep rooted curiosity possessed by the majority of Lutheran liturgiologists as to Rome's views and reactions to the Lutheran Liturgical Movement. This 1iturgical curiosity is whetted and agitated by the present liturgical movement being carried on in the Roman Church under the influence of the German Benedictines and the Austrian Augustinians. Such names as Ellard, Reinhold, and Hellriegel immediately bring to mind the vast task of restoring meaning to the liturgy for the Roman laity which these men are undertaking in this country.
An Analysis Of The Extent Of Growth In Doctrinal Knowledge Of St Louis Children In The Nine Months After Confirmation, Donald William Backus
An Analysis Of The Extent Of Growth In Doctrinal Knowledge Of St Louis Children In The Nine Months After Confirmation, Donald William Backus
Bachelor of Divinity
In an effort to determine a partial answer to the question whether or not children grow in doctrinal knowledge and understanding during the post-confirmation period, the following study was made among St. Louis children over the period of nine months after confirmation. Inasmuch, as the study confines itself to children in St. Louis, to a specific type of material, generalizations should be made cautiously. It would not necessarily be valid, for example, without careful comparison of all the variables, to conclude that children in a small rural parish in Texas would show the same rate or direction of growth that …
A Comprehensive Survey Of The Problems Of Old Age, Past And Present Solutions Offered For Them, And The Obligation Of The Church With Regard To Them, William Henry Lehmann Jr
A Comprehensive Survey Of The Problems Of Old Age, Past And Present Solutions Offered For Them, And The Obligation Of The Church With Regard To Them, William Henry Lehmann Jr
Bachelor of Divinity
Many secular agencies are delving into this problem. Instead of pointing the way as prophet, the church has been content to follow in the wake. The purpose of this thesis is to stimulate the church and its charitable agencies to find better more adequate means to care for the aged Christians. Insurance companies are aware of the increasing number of aged. Political parties are aware of the potential voting strength they have. The church must also be aware of their needs and requirements, and be prepared to fill them on a much grander scale than ever before.
The Date Of The Exodus, Enno Theodore Claus
The Date Of The Exodus, Enno Theodore Claus
Bachelor of Divinity
In determining the date of the exodus, one finds little direct evidence outside the Bible record. Egypt was indeed constantly in contact with Palestine from the time of Joseph (or even of Abraham) until the fugitives from the Babylonian conquest sought refuge there, and one might have hoped to find some reference to Jewish history in the Egyptian records. It is natural that the Bible scholar look for some reference to the exodus in particular. For the Exodus was one of the foremost events that took place in the history of the Israe1ites. All through the Old Testament, constant reference …
Luther's Doctrine Of Justification According To The Holl-Walther Controversy, Robert Hoeferkamp
Luther's Doctrine Of Justification According To The Holl-Walther Controversy, Robert Hoeferkamp
Bachelor of Divinity
In the following chapters the course of this controversy will be traced, an investigation of certain critical quotations From Luther will be carried out, and some definite conclusions as to the chief arena of disagreement will be reached. In order to achieve the proper historical perspective, we shall trace in this first chapter the doctrine of justification in the· sixteenth century as set forth by Luther, Melanchthon, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, Osiander, and the Formula of Concord.
An Examination And Refutation Of Mary Baker Eddy's Teaching On Marriage, Paul Ludwig Jr
An Examination And Refutation Of Mary Baker Eddy's Teaching On Marriage, Paul Ludwig Jr
Bachelor of Divinity
It may surprise most people to read in the official Church Manual of Christian Science these words, “If a Christian Scientist is to be married, the ceremony shall be performed by a clergyman who is legally authorized." Why does the Christian Science Church itself provide no marriage ceremony for its members, but insists that if they desire that estate they must be married by some authorized clergyman of another Church? Only through a study of Mrs. Eddy's teaching on marriage can the answer be found. But a study or Mrs. Eddy's teaching of marriage necessitates also an examination of her …
The History And Doctrine Of Jehovah's Witnesses With Final Reference To Hermeneutical Principles, Arlan H. Brandt
The History And Doctrine Of Jehovah's Witnesses With Final Reference To Hermeneutical Principles, Arlan H. Brandt
Bachelor of Divinity
Every system of theology or philosophy must concern itself with two major principles, the formal and the material principles. The formal principle deals with the source of the doctrines or teachings while the material principle concerns itself with the central point or core idea of doctrine, in the light of which the entire system must be viewed and evaluated. The Jehovah Witnesses claim that their formal principle is the Bible. It shall be the purpose of our third chapter to study this claim while this chapter shall confine itself with the material principle
The History, Doctrines, And Customs Of The Amish Mennonite Church, Robert N. Raabe
The History, Doctrines, And Customs Of The Amish Mennonite Church, Robert N. Raabe
Bachelor of Divinity
This dissertation is an account of the conservative descendants of the party known during the Reformation as the Anabaptists. That group of people has been viciously denounced by practically every historian since the Reformation. Few peop1e have dated to defend the Anabaptist party. Most of the criticism directed at them is undoubtedly authentic and unimpeachable. We are not trying to vindicate Anabaptist policies nor whitewash their faults.
Peirasmos In The New Testament - Its Exegetical And Theological Implications, Delwin B. Schneider
Peirasmos In The New Testament - Its Exegetical And Theological Implications, Delwin B. Schneider
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the aim of this study to present the Christian doctrine of temptation as it is found in the words Πeιpόςw and Πeιpθθwός in the New Testament. The terms appear frequently upon its pages. It is my purpose to study these appearances as they are found in the original text and upon such a study formulate the basic New Testament conception of temptation.
The Parish Library, Roger L. Bronsted
The Parish Library, Roger L. Bronsted
Bachelor of Divinity
In this thesis I shall attempt to show the need for a parish Library, and the Use to which, a good parish library can be put. My interest in this topic has developed through working with books as a student library assistant for three years at Luther College Library in Decorah, Iowa, and for two years at Luther Theological Seminary Library in St. Paul, Minnesota. This interest has been supplemented by successful use of a parish library program in a student mission at Bluffton, Iowa during the last two years of college, and at First Lutheran Church, Eau Claire, Wisconsin …
Hispanidad, Wilfred C. Langefeld
Hispanidad, Wilfred C. Langefeld
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the purpose of this consideration of Hispanided to trace: (1) the background of Spanish history which made it possible for a philosophy such as Hispanided to gain a foothold; (2) the philosophy of the Falangist which was expressed in Hispanided; (3) the relationship of Hispanided with the Roman Catholic Church; (4) the purpose and goal of Hispanided; (5) Hispanided in action; and (6) the results and reactions to Hispanided.
The Development Of The Youth Leadership Training In The Walther League, Samuel J. Roth
The Development Of The Youth Leadership Training In The Walther League, Samuel J. Roth
Bachelor of Divinity
It should be said that this paper does not attempt to give a complete picture of Walther League history. Many projects of great importance to the total League picture, e.g. Bible study, missions, the Hospice department, and the Talent Quest, have been omitted in the interest of focusing attention only on those endeavors which involved leadership training most directly. Moreover, attention is centered chiefly on international activities. To go into district, zone and society projects in great detail would necessitate a much more extensive study. However, frequent samplings of such localized projects are given, in order to keep the picture …
The Validity Of The Sociology Of Lutheranism Of Ernst Troeltsch, Eugene Brueggemann
The Validity Of The Sociology Of Lutheranism Of Ernst Troeltsch, Eugene Brueggemann
Bachelor of Divinity
It is not within the scope of this paper to treat the theology of Ernst Troeltsch in any kind of detail. Much less is it the intention of this study to pass judgment on his theology as a whole, except in the most general way, and on the basis of the judgment of others. But in order to make the review of his work The Social Teaching of the Christian Churches more understandable, and to provide a background for the critique of his sociology of Lutheranism, a few, paragraphs at the very beginning will be devoted to a rapid overview …
The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz
The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz
Bachelor of Divinity
The problem of the exposition of justification is not, however, the only point on which the Epistle of James and the works of Paul are said to vary. Other difficulties that have been cited include the apostles' supposedly varying concepts of sin, their description of God, and the lack of emphasis regarding Christ in the epistle James wrote as compared to the Christ-centered exposition of doctrine penned by Paul.
On these points, as we shall find in this thesis, the difference lies not so much in the words that are expressed by the apostles, but rather in the scope of …
The Life And Work Of Ezra, Paul A. Vojtko
The Life And Work Of Ezra, Paul A. Vojtko
Bachelor of Divinity
Ezra was one of the great men of Jewish history. It has been said, and rightly so, that with Ezra, one stands at the cradle of Judaism. In Jewish tradition he figures as a second Moses. He wielded a tremendous influence upon the Jewish nation, the effects of which are felt to this very day. He set an indelible mark upon succeeding ages. He was largely responsible for the course Judaism took after the exilic period. Through his untiring efforts the law which was originally given by Moses, but much since that time had been neglected, was restored to the …
The Origin And Early Development Of Puritanism, V Ralph Weinhold
The Origin And Early Development Of Puritanism, V Ralph Weinhold
Bachelor of Divinity
Much has been written of the history of English Puritanism. This brief examination of the subject purposes no new contribution. It seeks merely to draw together the main events of that phase of English history and to discuss some of the issues involved.
The first problem is one of definition. One scholar has suggested that Puritanism has as many definitions as it has students, with a like distribution of trustworthiness. Therefore, before attempting to define it ourselves we do well to consider the definitions offered by recognized scholars of the movement.
