It will be our purpose in this paper to review some of the more prominent concepts of persuasive authority found in churches today. We will then endeavor to present the Biblical concept of persuasive authority, as it is found in the New Testament, especially in the Gospels and in the life and writings of St. Paul.

Moody, with only a district school education, without a church or society behind him to support him, without any of the recognized graces of oratory, spoke to an estimated one hundred million, and converted an estimated one million souls. He established more permanent centers of religious activity than any preacher of his day. Hence, it is certainly fitting that we examine critically the theology of so influential a man. We intend to determine how closely, and in what fields, he adheres to Scripture teaching, and, on the basis of our observations, place him in the Fundamentalist fold. As …
