This thesis identifies antithesis as a major characteristic of the short fiction of Yusuf Idris and William Faulkner and addresses its importance to the style of the fiction as a means of conveying the themes of social and individual conflict. Each author addresses man's struggle ,vith and opposition to social conditions, social mores and social restrictions such as poverty, racism, abuse and conformity. Opposition is crucial to man's discovery of his own identity and to his development in the stories. Idris and Faulkner use opposition in theme, characterization, and setting, and the study defines these elements as emerging from the …

The main concern of this thesis is the different strategies that the government adopts in the process of upgrading or redeveloping squatter areas. The thesis studies two projects: a redevelopment project that applied a topdown approach and an upgrading project that applied a participatory approach. This thesis focuses on the relation between the project and the people arguing that there is a negative correlation between participation and resistance. The thesis shows the ways in which the adoption of an un-participatory approach in a development projects creates resistance on the part of the beneficiaries, which consequently negatively affects the success of …

Recent strands of western historical writing understand gender in medieval Islamic societies through any of number of local cultural, religious and political discourses. This type of writing shifts the focus of historical research away from questions regarding whether Islam debases or improves the status of women--questions that tend to immobilize the subject in a polemic of competing essentialisms-and instead finds gender as having been produced in historically dynamic local processes. In the area of second or foreign language oral proficiency, previous research has not examined the effect of different lengths of pre-task planning time on the individual speaking habits of L2 learners. The present study aimed to address this problem by examining the influence of planning time on the speech production of accuracy-oriented and fluency-oriented EFL learners under three planning conditions: zero, one and three minutes. A pretest-posttest experimental design was employed to investigate the two research questions. In sociolinguistics, code-switching (CS), refers to the alternative use by bilinguals of two or more languages in the san1e conversation. This exploratory study aims to investigate the CS phenomenon in Lebanon.
