This thesis identifies antithesis as a major characteristic of the short fiction of Yusuf Idris and William Faulkner and addresses its importance to the style of the fiction as a means of conveying the themes of social and individual conflict. Each author addresses man's struggle ,vith and opposition to social conditions, social mores and social restrictions such as poverty, racism, abuse and conformity. Idris and Faulkner use opposition in theme, characterization, and setting, and the study defines these elements as emerging from the …

Gender And Authority In Almoravid Andalusia: Subjects/Objects Of Regulation In Ibn Abdun's Risala Fi Al Qada'wa Al Hisba, Sean Connor Riordan

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Recent strands of western historical writing understand gender in medieval Islamic societies through any of number of local cultural, religious and political discourses. This type of writing shifts the focus of historical research away from questions regarding whether Islam debases or improves the status of women--questions that tend to immobilize the subject in a polemic of competing essentialisms-and instead finds gender as having been produced in historically dynamic local processes. My thesis attempts to contribute to th.is literature by exploring how gender functioned as a regulatory issue in the context of the Almoravid political-religious movement in alAndalus through a close …

A pretest-posttest experimental design was employed to investigate the two research questions. Three oral picture description tasks constituted the pretest and two posttests, which were administered to the subjects in individual sessions. The pretest, …

Mamluk Female Patronage, Nanis Nabil Hanna

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is discussing the topic of Mamliik Female Patronage in Egypt and how it differed from its contemporaries in Jerusalem, Seljuq Anatolia, and Timurid Iran. This subject, however, has not attracted the attention of many scholars, probably, because the information provided by the chronicles and biographers oqhe Mamliik period is scattered and incidental. This is also related to the age-long assumption that women had neither the economic resources nor the legal standing to commission works of art or buildings. The scholars who approached this topic were dealing with the subject from an architectural point of view and not in …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an attempt to tackle the religious theme in Graham Greene's Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter. Greene tries to depict the incomprehensibility of God's mercy and grace which is under estimated by modern man. As a result modern man finds himself in the grips of despair. This is po1irayed through Greene's heroes who face a dilemma through the conflict between good and evil. In my thesis, I will attempt to explain what use Graham Greene makes of religious belief. I would search out motifs and patterns discussing certain themes and …
