Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

On May 14th, 1979, Ann Hurst interviewed Ruth Feist about her life before, during, and after World War II. In her interview Feist discusses her early childhood in Mannheim, her arrival in the United States, her family's religious practices, and other family history. She also details how her family left Germany at different times and through a variety of different European countries. At the end of the interview Feist recounts her education in the United States, getting married and having a family and moving to the Miami Valley area.

On May 7, 1979 Rose M. Lawson interviewed Eugene Krauss about his life before, during, and after World War II. In his interview Krauss begins by detailing his family history and childhood in Hungary and moving to Budapest to become a teacher. Throughout the interview he discusses becoming a forced laborer, the brutality he witnessed, and the awful conditions that he endured. Towards the end of his interview Krauss explains his arrival in the United States and his eventual arrival and life in Dayton.

This catalog features work from an exhibition of artists that were beneficiaries of a regional fellowship program funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and administered by the Art Department at Wright State University. Artists from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota were invited to submit recent work to apply for the fellowship. The exhibition was held at Wright State University Art Galleries in May of 1979.

On January 25th, 1979, Rose Mary Lawson interviewe Helga Silbermann about her life before, during, and after World War II. In her interview Silbermann discusses being her early childhood in Berlin, Germany, her family history, and her religious background. Over the course of the interview she details how she began hiding from the Gestapo in Berlin and staying in a variety of places with different people that she knew or met. Towards the end of the interview Silbermann talks about coming to America, how she felt about the country, and how she eventually arrived in Dayton.

On January 24th, 1984, Dr. Willis Stoesz interviewed Johannes Feenstra about his life before, during, and after World War II. In this interview Feenstra details his travels after World War II, his father's profession, his training as a dentist in Germany and more. Feenstra also discusses his involvement in The Underground resistance movement in Holland and his eventual incarceration in the Oranienburg concentration camp and what life was like there. On January 9th, 1979, Dr. Charles Berry interviewed Henry Steeber about his life before, during, and after World War II. In his interview Steeber discusses his early life in Vienna Austria, his family history, and his lack of religious upbringing. Over the course of his interview details being forced into a cargo car bound for a concentration camp. He eventually escaped by jumping from the train, and when caught he claimed to be English which allowed him to receive treatment. The project documented in this catalog were first conceived in early 1978 by Ed Levine, then chairman of the Department of Art and Art History at Wright State University, and Betty Collings, then director of the University Gallery at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Both institutions had, for five years, been sponsoring a variety of exhibitions and experimental projects that probed various aspects of contemporary art. The similarity of goals between the two institutions made this collaborative effort possible.

This essay examines the ideas of one of the central characters in Tom Robbins’ 1977 novel, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues/ in relation to the thinking of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Zarathustra. It makes no argument for any influence of Nietzsche upon Robbins but rather considers similarities in thought as such.

This essay was first published by The Enigma Press, the private-press of Earl R. Nitschke, Professor of Printmaking at Central Michigan University in a limited edition.
