We Remember: Dayton Area Student Writing And Artwork About The Holocaust, Dayton Holocaust Resource Center

Dayton Holocaust Resource Center Publications

The study of the Holocaust involves very personal involvement by a teacher and the interaction of his or her students. The culmination oft his study may be writings or art that release the deep feelings stirred by this study.

For the past fifteen years we have conducted the Holocaust Writing Contest and the Max May Memorial Holocaust Art Contest to encourage this expression by students. Through the contests, we have seen some remarkable student work. Hundreds of Dayton-area public and parochial children in grades six through twelve have submitted their efforts. Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

This is the inaugural eight page newsletter created by the Wright State University African and African American Studies Program documenting course offerings, faculty and student news, faculty and student reflections, and more. Of particular note, on the seventh page in a section titled "Director's Corner," is a statement mentioning the approval of the Ohio Board of Regents for Wright State to offer a major in African and African American Studies.

A Dream Fulfilled details the engineering and personalities involved in building an exact, full-scale replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer. The replica was constructed over a period of two years and is currently on display in Wright State University's Paul Laurence Dunbar Library.

Adrian Kinnane’s unpublished manuscript “The Crucible of Flight” is an in depth look at what outside influences helped the Wright Brothers become the first to be successful in the quest for flight. Kinnane considers that the difference between them and their competitor/colleagues may well have been the difference that crowned them ultimately with success. His main focus is the familial and personal forces that set the Wrights apart. He studies the Wright family bond, the friendly and adversarial ties the Wrights developed outside the family bond, and the fraternal bond between Orville and Wilbur Wright.
