Polemics And Patronage In The City Of Victory, Valerie Stoker
Polemics And Patronage In The City Of Victory, Valerie Stoker
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
How did the patronage activities of India’s Vijayanagara Empire (c. 1346–1565) influence Hindu sectarian identities? Although the empire has been commonly viewed as a Hindu bulwark against Islamic incursion from the north or as a religiously ecumenical state, Valerie Stoker argues that the Vijayanagara court was selective in its patronage of religious institutions. To understand the dynamic interaction between religious and royal institutions in this period, she focuses on the career of the Hindu intellectual and monastic leader Vyasatirtha. An agent of the state and a powerful religious authority, Vyasatirtha played an important role in expanding the empire’s economic and …

Producer's Notes: A Personal History Of The Department Of Theatre Arts At Wright State University, 1970-1988, Abe J. Bassett
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
Producer's Notes is a vividly written personal history of a theatre department that within ten years of its founding became Ohio’s dominant undergraduate theatre program. Three times cited by the Ohio Board of Higher Education the department was awarded Program Excellence Awards, which came with prizes of more than one and one half million dollars. It is today considered one of nation’s top five exclusively undergraduate theatre programs. The leader of a talented and hardworking group of faculty is Abe J Bassett who predicted in1970 that the Theatre at Wright State would be recognized as the best theatre program in …
The Private Library Of Eric Blair, V. Ii: From Books To Bits (2015), Ronald R. Geibert
The Private Library Of Eric Blair, V. Ii: From Books To Bits (2015), Ronald R. Geibert
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
Like the roaming of the library shelves, or the process of surfing the web, I am drawing from “slivers” of existing material so as to create more challenging panoramic prints. The scale has increased and the similarity to the facets that are found in fine glass is obvious. They float back and forth between the analytical and the abstract. I am combining numerous slivers into extended “brain waves” that represent how learning is practiced and accomplished today—in bits and pieces. They illustrate a world in transition—from the analogue to the digital. From the physical to the ethereal.

Abe, Son Of Abraham: Stories, Vignettes, Remembrances, Reflections, Thoughts, & Tributes, Abe J. Bassett
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
Abe, Son of Abraham begins as a series of well written and funny vignettes about the author’s early years and his special relationship with his father. It concludes with remembrances of his uncles and aunts, immigrants from Lebanon. In between are stories of adventures of hitchhiking in Europe, serving in the Army in the Far East and traveling in the Middle East. The title derives from the fact that Abe and Abraham are Junior and Senior, leading to the book’s dedication to the father whose influence permeated the life of the junior. Abe J. Bassett is Emeritus Professor of Theatre …

Today is often labeled as the Information Age. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we are inundated with pictures, video, sound, and text. DSL, cable, cell-phones, fax machines, satellite radio, and other technologies keep us instantly in touch with events. To be "connected" is to be seen as contemporary and knowledgeable.
Unfortunately, this instant access is not without risk. Much of this immediate information is unfiltered, untested, and, on occasions, suspect. The anonymous Internet "expert" that is quoted might no more be an expert than your next-door neighbor (in fact, that web site might just be the creation …

Desolation's March: The Rise Of Personalism And The Reign Of Amusement In 21st Century America, Stephen Paul Foster Ph.D.
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
Dr. Stephen Foster (author of Melancholy Duty, Kluwer, 1997) has undertaken a critique of American decadence and moral squalor. He argues that three basic cultural phenomena have conjoined to warp and degrade the moral and cultural landscape of the country. Treated together for purposes of critique these phenomena have intertwined in the national psyche. They are the impact of personalism (via J. J. Rosseau) and the leveraged individual, the growth of the therapeutic state and the overwhelming preoccupation with entertainment. The author suggests the moral and cultural quandary these "states" have wrought and the attendant loss of artistic, moral …
The Present Past: A Survey Of Work By David Leach, David Leach, Robert And Elaine Stein Galleries
The Present Past: A Survey Of Work By David Leach, David Leach, Robert And Elaine Stein Galleries
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
In 1982 printmaker and painter David Leach created a photo intaglio print titled Broken Line (fig .1) that records an illusion, a seeming change in angle of a twig partly immersed in water, an effect resulting from light refraction. The image might almost serve as commentary on Leach's production as artist. He has stated that in 1982 he realized he was not a "post-studio" artist. 1 That conclusion caused him to move away from the conceptualist investigations that had become the focus of his art by the later 1970s and for which work he had established a reputation. Partly out …

Memories Of Rahija, Abe Bassett
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
Sometime in 1987, sadly, I realized that my father, who would have been 102 had he lived, passed the milestone of his 100th birthday without note or commemoration. I vowed this would not happen with my mother, Rahija Saad Bassett. In early May, 1991, I wrote to all of her children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces, cousins, and others, asking them to pause for a moment of reflection at the noon hour on her date of birth. And I also asked for a written remembrance: a story, an incident, an impression to be shared. This book is a collection of those …
