A Weave Of Women In The Context Of Contemporary Feminism And Traditional Judaism, Patricia J. Bush

In this thesis I discuss E.M. Broner’s novel A Weave of Women and show how she uses innovative rituals of status elevation and status reversal to focus her reader’s attention on the problems associated with the patriarchal structures of traditional Judaism, e.g., racism and religious chauvinism. In Part One I provide a description of contemporary feminist rituals to set Broner’s novel into context. Part Two is an exposition of the text of her novel comparing its feminist rites to various Jewish prayer books and descriptions of traditional Jewish rituals. This thesis attempts to elucidate the concepts of death and the netherworld found within Sumerian and Semitic literary texts. This particular topic has received very little attention in the past but studies of a similar nature have tended to take a fairly general approach dealing with Mesopotamian concepts in their entirety. Sumerian and Semitic cultures have not been distinguished due to the large number of similarities which were seen to exist between their societies, cultures, and religious ideas. This thesis explores eye symbolism within the context of the art forms of the Ancient Near East, including pottery, sculpture, idols of amulets, seals, cuneiform texts and the literature of the Old Testament. The central concern in this study is to bring together under one cover the iconography of the eye and its meaning from the cultures of Mesopotamia and Israel. The human eye has been a symbol for good or evil from earliest times. The principal concerns of this thesis are the connections that Virginia Woolf made between writing, revelation, women and biography, set in the historical and literary contexts of her life in England from the late nineteenth century to her death in 1941. Her vision of biographical form, language and the biographical self is assessed within the environment established by her father, her Victorian childhood and education, Bloomsbury attitudes and a spirituality shaped by her Anglican heritage and her experiences of gender. This thesis treats the hermeneutical theories of the Canadian Jesuit philosopher Bernard Lonergan and the German Protestant thinker Hans-George Gadamer. It begins by determining the extent of the possible influence of the latter’s work upon the former’s theory of interpretation as outlined in his Methods in Theology. Beginning with an analysis of Lonergan’s cognitive theory and his developing theory of interpretation (Chapter One), it continues with a discussion of the position put forward by Gadamer in his Truth and Method (Chapter Two). For both of these men, hermeneutics goes far beyond the interpretation of specific texts. There are four areas …

This thesis provides a data base of the sites in Israel at which stamped Greek amphora handles have been found and an index of the Greek names used in the stamps. The index is intended to be a guide only, to point out the publications which should be examined for more detailed information. The thesis illustrates the use of the data base and index to prepare catalogues of stamped amphora handles by supplementing published listings of stamped handles from Caesara Maritima that were never previously published.
