When my exchange was shortened due to COVID-19, I had the opportunity to undertake a part-time research assistant position with Dr. Jeff Tennant in the French and Linguistics departments at Western. Our project studied the rhythm and intonation of the speech of Franco-Ontarians. This paper serves as a description and reflection of this experiential learning opportunity. Specifically, it explores the challenges of operating within a multi-year project timeline as well as dealing with imposter syndrome as a student new to true research.

My experiences at SWIM and READ have led me through many challenges and earned me many successes and have helped me to gain a variety of hard skills and soft skills while letting me improve upon some that I already had. Here, I got the opportunities to work on a book project called “20 Stories of Hope” and to spend a year teaching a young child literacy skills, both of which have given me valuable chances to both find and pursue new passions and to develop my career pathway towards teaching.

Working as the Marketing Coordinator Intern for a tech start-up was an amazing experience. I conducted competitor research, ghostwrote blog posts, ran social media, and aided in a complete company rebrand. Connected is a software product development firm. They partner with ambitious organizations to deliver on the potential of software-powered products. Joining the company halfway through their rebrand, I was immediately thrown into the deep end.
