To fulfil my SASAH experiential-learning requirement, I worked as an intern at the Stratford Festival Archives in 2017 and travelled to Ecuador as part of a Women’s Empowerment trip in 2018. At the Festival, my colleague and I were responsible for designing the Archives’ first-ever digital catalogue. We researched the provenance of each costume piece, which often included looking through design bibles and conducting informal interviews. We then photographed and wrote detailed descriptions for each costume piece. My experiences at SWIM and READ have led me through many challenges and earned me many successes and have helped me to gain a variety of hard skills and soft skills while letting me improve upon some that I already had. Here, I got the opportunities to work on a book project called “20 Stories of Hope” and to spend a year teaching a young child literacy skills, both of which have given me valuable chances to both find and pursue new passions and to develop my career pathway towards teaching.

In this report, Belyk reflects on her two internship experiences. In her summer with Western Libraries, Belyk worked on social-media content production and social-media management, as well as expanded her knowledge of design and her skill of working collaboratively. In her three years with the Western Mustangs, Belyk learned a lot about working in design professionally, as well as how to thrive in unfamiliar circumstances, and what kind of team she likes to work with. Throughout the report Belyk reflects on the value of experiential learning and what it means to be a designer.

Experiential learning can be difficult to attain in a traditional classroom environment, where knowledge is transferred rather than experienced firsthand. Moreover, that challenge is especially amplified during a global pandemic; nevertheless, experiential learning is a critical component of a student’s education, and there are ways to achieve it. One solution is to extend the learning experience beyond the confines of the classroom, where students can get a taste of the real-world work environment and a clearer picture of what their future jobs might entail.

Reflecting On My Adventures In Experiential Learning, Will Sharpe

This report analyzes and reflects on my experiential learning experiences with the Forest City Film Festival and Western Libraries. I look back at my initial feelings of bewilderment and imposter syndrome and then track my progress as I’m pushed out of my comfort zone and learn the skills I need to excel. My time with the Forest City Film Festival and Western Libraries, as well as my peers’ testimonies, taught me that at SASAH, we all have the skills needed to succeed in our fields — and the experiential learning program is an excellent place to nurture them.
