This thesis dossier is separated into the following distinct sections: an extended artist statement; a portfolio documenting artworks made during my MFA candidacy and my exhibit Pharmakon: Acts, Traces, and Maps; and a case study of artist Tony Oursler, whose video and multimedia installations explore the psychological and social relationships between individuals and technologies. Together, they present my exploration of the body’s ‘power of acting,’ or potentia agendi, in relation to the modificatory capacity of technology, or affectus, on the human body. This dossier is combined with my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Absence and Proximity. This paper includes the following components: an extended artist statement, documentation of art practice and a case study of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s First Surface. The first two chapters investigate the digital representation of the body through affect, boundary and subjectivity. I also examine my material and technical choices related to these concepts. The last chapter focuses on how First Surface opens up the possibility of identification through building a body-technology complex.

Combined with a Masters of Fine Art thesis exhibition, Symbiotic, the dossier provides three components: an extended artist’s statement, documentation of my artwork and an exhibition review of There Is No There at Hamilton Artist Inc. in 2015. These three components help guide and illustrate my findings in investigating the interrelationship between the human body and the environment, specifically in trees; how they are inseparable and interchangeable, and how they pertain to the non-existence of a pure natural world. This dossier and the accompanying exhibition On Coming and Going (presented at the Artlab Gallery in January 2017) constitute my MFA in Visual Arts thesis. The first chapter of this dossier is a Comprehensive Artist Statement in which I reflect on how my art, thinking, and life engage different meanings of coming and going in different ways. This thesis is an examination of physical pain in ancient tragedy, with the focus on three plays: Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound and Sophocles’ Philoctetes and Trachiniae. The study unfolds the layers of several conceptual systems in order to get closer to the core—pain and its limits in tragedy. The first chapter aims to show that Aristotle’s model for the analysis of tragedy in his classificatory tract, the Poetics, centered on the ill-defined concept of mimesis, is an attempt to tame pain and clean tragedy of its inherent viscerality. This thesis evaluates Michel Henry’s phenomenology of the lived body: A thorough reconsideration of the role of the lived body in the transcendental constitution of our world has important ethical consequences. We begin with Heidegger’s definition of phenomenology, which rests on his understanding of time as the horizon of being. We then turn to Henry’s criticism of transcendental monism and its phenomenological derealization. Henry subsequently argues for a new thinking of immanence, which requires a redefinition of phenomenology through the immediate experience of the embodied self. This immediate immanence manifests itself, through our perception of transcendence, as the affective tonality …
