See It And Believe It: An Investigation Into Singers' Imagery Use, Brianna Desantis Nov 2020

See It And Believe It: An Investigation Into Singers' Imagery Use, Brianna Desantis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Sport and dance psychology researchers have shown, time and again, how imagery improves performance in their respective fields. In singing, imagery has a long history in the bel canto (beautiful singing) tradition but it is more linked to using metaphor and simile as teaching aids rather than a mental practice technique to improve performance. Because of this, imagery in singing is even broader than imagery in athletics or dance. Moreover, imagery in singing psychology has not been as thoroughly examined in an empirical setting, especially not from a sport and dance psychology perspective.

This monograph aims to outline the term …

The Alia Musica And The Carolingian Conception Of Mode, Matthew R J Nace Oct 2020

The Alia Musica And The Carolingian Conception Of Mode, Matthew R J Nace

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Alia musica is perhaps the most idiosyncratic of the early treatises on the ecclesiastical modes. It is a composite made up of at least three independent treatises and additional commentary, and the majority of the scholarly attention that it has thus far received has been devoted to questions of dating and authorship, as well as to the place of the Alia musica in the development of the octave species paradigm of modality. However, the majority of the treatise is dedicated to the explanation of a complex harmonic numerology that applies the fundamental relation 12:9:8:6 (which generate the intervals of …

The Search For Canadian Art Song: Developing The Framework For A Database Of Art Song By Canadian Composers, Leanne Vida Sep 2020

The Search For Canadian Art Song: Developing The Framework For A Database Of Art Song By Canadian Composers, Leanne Vida

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Art song is a diverse, inclusive genre of music, as well as an important pedagogical tool for singers. It can be performed in the smallest of spaces, but it is also able to hold its own in the largest concert halls. It requires only a few musicians, making it an ideal choice for a concert or recital setting, and its poetic content describes virtually every aspect of life, in many languages, making it accessible to a broad audience. Many of its works require less physical maturity on the part of singers and require less rigorous technical ability than larger concert …

Sounding Unsettlement: Rethinking Settler States Of Mind And Re(-)Cognition Through Scenes Of Cross-Cultural Listening, Ryan Ben Shuvera Aug 2020

Sounding Unsettlement: Rethinking Settler States Of Mind And Re(-)Cognition Through Scenes Of Cross-Cultural Listening, Ryan Ben Shuvera

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this dissertation I consider how listening to music produced by Indigenous peoples might convince settler listeners to surrender settler states of mind. I focus on the elements of settler colonialism that are exemplified in and challenged by the experiences of listening to music produced by Indigenous peoples. I focus on these aesthetic encounters as a way of exposing the everyday presence and power of settler states of mind and, more importantly, exploring how settlers might go about rebuilding states of mind through these moments of aesthetic surrender that are spurred by embodied experiences of sound. My project builds on …

Music In The Moment Of "Cyber Culture:" An Outward Spiral, Brandon Sked Jul 2020

Music In The Moment Of "Cyber Culture:" An Outward Spiral, Brandon Sked

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The advent of the Internet, and file-sharing specifically, challenged the relationship between music and its monetary value. This thesis investigates what happened after music became “free.” Richard Middleton’s “moments of situational change” are used as a framework for discussion. Through a survey of recent history and twentieth-century technologies, it becomes clear that the amplification and acceleration of scale, pace and patterns of music consumption, production and distribution practices as incited by the Internet renegotiated music’s monetary value, but did not introduce us to the way we value music aesthetically, as a pastime, and as a means for constructing community and …

Analysis Of The Preludium Of The Rosary Sonata No. 1 In D Minor For Violin And Basso Continuo The Annunciation By H. I. F. Von Biber: An Angelic Dialogue, Frangel Lopez Cesena Jul 2020

Analysis Of The Preludium Of The Rosary Sonata No. 1 In D Minor For Violin And Basso Continuo The Annunciation By H. I. F. Von Biber: An Angelic Dialogue, Frangel Lopez Cesena

Music Research and Composition Works

When I was preparing my final undergraduate recital at the Escuela Superior de Música del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in la Ciudad de México I was asked to add a baroque piece to my repertoire. My violin teacher, Maestro Cuauhtémoc Rivera Guzmán suggested that I look at the work of a unique Bohemian- Austrian composer, Biber. I started my research and found the Rosary Sonatas. They captured my attention not because of their rare tuning, beautiful copper engravings of the original, and unique copy of the manuscript, but for their representational clarity, something I noticed and experienced upon first …

Domenico Dragonetti: A Case Study Of The 12 Unaccompanied Waltzes, Jury T. Kobayashi Jun 2020

Domenico Dragonetti: A Case Study Of The 12 Unaccompanied Waltzes, Jury T. Kobayashi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis uses the 12 waltzes composed by the famous double bass virtuoso, Domenico Dragonetti, as a case study to examine certain key aspects of his playing style. More specifically, this thesis seeks to answer the question: what aspects of Dragonetti’s playing could be deemed virtuosic? I select a number of instances in the waltzes where the demands posed by various passages suggest a specific solution required to execute the passage. I suggest various solutions to these passages that reveal the types of solutions Dragonetti might have employed and help shed light on my initial question. The analysis reveals that …

Understanding Viktor Ullmann Through His Liederbuch Des Hafis, Chad G. Louwerse Jun 2020

Understanding Viktor Ullmann Through His Liederbuch Des Hafis, Chad G. Louwerse

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Liederbuch des Hafis is an enjoyable, complex, well-thought-out set of songs that feature a variety of musical styles, which are composed with a variety of compositional methods. The songs provide interesting and rewarding challenges to singer and pianist alike and are enjoyable to hear as an audience member. They are important because they are great examples of Viktor Ullmann’s skill as a song composer, and they also have great potential for concert programming as each song is distinct, and the set contrasts well with other repertoire. This is also an excellent set of songs for bass-baritones, who lack a …

Exploring Being Queer And Performing Queerness In Popular Music, Rosheeka Parahoo Jun 2020

Exploring Being Queer And Performing Queerness In Popular Music, Rosheeka Parahoo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

For many pop artists, queer is what they do, not who they are. They perform queerness, rather than identify as queer. The research I present here suggests that popular culture’s understanding of queerness relies on a heteronormative lens, whereby queerness is objectified and paraded primarily as an artistic performance. My analysis demonstrates that David Bowie’s influence rests in his ability to create a space where his fans can perform queerness, without necessarily being queer. As such, Bowie’s performances have come to form our expectation of what a queer performance should look like. Continuing his legacy, Lady Gaga’s tribute to Bowie …

Critical Border Crossing: Exploring Positionalities Through Soundscape Composition And Critical Reflection, Kelly Bylica Jun 2020

Critical Border Crossing: Exploring Positionalities Through Soundscape Composition And Critical Reflection, Kelly Bylica

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this study was to explore the development, implementation, and impact of a musical learning project in two middle school general music contexts. Specifically, this study sought to consider in what ways, if any, such a project supported critical reflection, created opportunities for border crossing, and encouraged multiple ways of knowing in the music classroom (Giroux, 2005). Co-designed by the researcher and two participating educators, the five-week project focused on the creation of digitally designed student soundscape compositions that aimed to help students draw connections between learning practice and in-the-world experience. Critical listening and dialogue were utilized as …

Dreamvision Songbook: Five Songs For Mixed Ensemble, Maxwell R. Lucas Mr. Jun 2020

Dreamvision Songbook: Five Songs For Mixed Ensemble, Maxwell R. Lucas Mr.

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The DREAMVISION SONGBOOK is a musical dream vision: a cycle of allegorical songs for mixed ensemble (three sopranos, guitar, violin, double bass and percussion). The text for the work consists of five original English poems written by the composer. The poems take the characteristics of the medieval rondeau, virelai and ballade as a formal departure point. The five poems depict a series of episodes that weave together a dream vision; a pilgrimage in which the dreamer encounters imagery of environmental collapse, death, decay and catastrophe, but also symbols of hope and repair.

"Dance Like Nobody's Paying": Spotify And Surveillance As The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, T. Andrew Braun May 2020

"Dance Like Nobody's Paying": Spotify And Surveillance As The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, T. Andrew Braun

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines Spotify, the world’s most popular music streaming service, and its usage of music as a data extraction tool. I position Spotify as a surveillance capitalist firm that puts music at the centre of an enclosed environment designed to condition users’ affective responses and behaviors and reorient production of music. I analyze three features of the platform: a campaign in which Spotify invites users and producers to share the data it collects about them, the arrangement of the platform’s architecture into mood-based playlists, and its penchant for music that is “Chill.” I show how each serves the surveillance …

Music Education In A Liquid Social World: The Nuances Of Teaching With Students Of Immigrant And Refugee Backgrounds, Gabriela Ocádiz Velázquez Feb 2020

Music Education In A Liquid Social World: The Nuances Of Teaching With Students Of Immigrant And Refugee Backgrounds, Gabriela Ocádiz Velázquez

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This integrated-article dissertation explores the multiple ways in which music teachers, community facilitators, and students engage in music teaching and learning in social contexts prone to change due to human mobility. Drawing upon Bauman’s sociological understanding of modern societies as liquid and the larger implications of processes of human mobility in schools and communities, this research focuses on exploring music education as it happens within an increasingly diversifying Canadian society.

In the first article, a philosophical research study, I conceptualize the notion of coping with discomfort as a form of response possibly experienced by music teachers. Here, I draw from …

Ch. 05 - Transforming Music Education Re-Visited: The Significance Of Internationalization And Mentoring, Alexandra Kertz-Welzel Jan 2020

Ch. 05 - Transforming Music Education Re-Visited: The Significance Of Internationalization And Mentoring, Alexandra Kertz-Welzel

The Road Goes Ever On: Estelle Jorgensen's Legacy in Music Education

This chapter returns to Jorgensen’s 2003 publication Transforming Music Education. Kertz-Welzel revisits significant aspects of transformation in music education which Jorgensen suggests, and which are still important today. The author also emphasizes additional dimensions that are critical in the 21st century, such as internationalization and mentoring. Through the formation of the International Society for the Philosophy of Music Education, philosophy of music education was significantly transformed. Internationalization in a respective field is always connected to the engagement of individual researchers who shape it and attract others to become part of it. Therefore, mentoring young scholars is an …
