In 1988 Australia celebrated two hundred years of European settlement. At its annual conference the Australian Division of the Australasian Association of Philosophy marked the occasion with a symposium on claims by Aboriginal p_eople for compensation arising out of that settlement. The two papers below were presented at the symposium and were subsequently accepted for publication by the previous Editor. Introduction:

For many literary scholars and general readers, the expression 'Kipling's India' neatly delineates the imperialist society that existed on the Indian subcontinent in the late nineteenth century. The phrase, however, is deceptive in its simplicity. It does not reveal, or even imply, the internal workings behind what is certainly a vast imaginative construct, a construct that involves a specific political ideology, various cultural myths, and an extraordinary emotional investment.
