Marilyn (Rowan) McKissic, speaking in character as her ancestor Mary (Munt) Rowan, tells the story of the Rowans of Owensboro, an African-American family whose members have maintained contact over a century of annual reunions.

Business and personal correspondence, as well as business records (chiefly invoices and statements from Louisville suppliers) for the Green family at Falls of Rough, Grayson County, Kentucky. Green operated a number of businesses, including saw mills, a grist mill, woolen mill, and a general store. He also operated a large farm raising tobacco and livestock, as well as a herd of Shetland ponies. Although his businesses are covered extensively in the correspondence and records, politics and local economic development is also discussed.

Student paper titled “The Quilting Art” in which Brenda Jarvis interviews her mother, Jane Jarvis, about her experiences related to crafting quilts. The author provides a biographical summary of her mother and describes her early forays into quilt making. Jarvis also describes the social aspects of quilting, patterns as a reflection of certain lifestyles, the process of quilt construction, and the materials necessary to complete the final product. Included in the paper are color photographs of various quilting styles along with samples of quilting handiwork.

Howard, Wayne County, Illinois. He replies to Howard’s request for money with a description of poor local economic conditions, including low prices for crops and horses, difficulty collecting debts, and even lack of money to pay for marriage licenses. He expresses his wish to marry and relates an anecdote about three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter, the last referring to bachelors.

The interviews were conducted during the 1930s, part of a Federal Writers’ Project funded by the Works Progress Administration project and administered by the Library of Congress.
