Addressing The Dangers Of The Online Alt-Right, Paul Harrison
Addressing The Dangers Of The Online Alt-Right, Paul Harrison
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
This presentation aims to establish how the online alt-right phenomenon is a problem for the United States and propose multiple potential solutions to that problem.Evidence was gathered through online academic databases and media organizations' publications of personal accounts of people who have had encounters with the alt-right or experienced the problems it causes. The online far right is built on violence and extremism, far from mainstream American politics. In appealing to young American men through the alt-right pipeline, far right online communities are harmful to American society because of their spreading hateful messages against minorities and their promotion of violence, which …
Social Media's Effect On Youth, Joshua Gardner
Social Media's Effect On Youth, Joshua Gardner
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
This paper goes in depth about social media and the effect it has had on the mental health of youth in todays society. Compiling research from several peer reviewed journals and personal experiences, the conclusion reached seems to point that there is a correlation between social media and less emotional stability, toxic and harmful body image comparisons, as well as higher rates of depression depending on the amount of time spent on social media platforms. Although there are consistent studies demonstrating that social media has a negative impact, there are also studies showing that social media provides healthy outlets, more …
Chicanos' Negotiation Of Language And Culture With Standard English In Cache Valley, Ut, Vanessa Garcia Vazquez
Chicanos' Negotiation Of Language And Culture With Standard English In Cache Valley, Ut, Vanessa Garcia Vazquez
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Gloria Anzaldúa theorized that the Chicano English, which she felt best depicted her identity, is seen by educators and American society as an "illegitimate, bastard language" (1987). The stereotypical view on various language variations and vernaculars has contributed to this idea that non-standard English is "illegitimate" or wrong. A Chicano's first language is essentially both English and Spanish. They typically begin speaking Spanish at the beginning of their lives and shortly after they begin to learn English at school. However, this new language is introduced before they can learn the first—which produces a mix of both languages and is commonly …
Keep Sweet: An Ideological Analysis Of The Flds Cult Led By Warren Jeffs, Kassidi Andrus
Keep Sweet: An Ideological Analysis Of The Flds Cult Led By Warren Jeffs, Kassidi Andrus
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
This presentation is an ideological criticism of the 'keep sweet' ideology that contributes to the hegemonic society of the FLDS religious cult led by Warren Jeffs. The fundamentalists of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are a cult that practices polygamy and communalism. According to Michael McGee, humans are not conditioned directly to beliefs but to a vocabulary of concepts, called ideographs, that function as guides, excuses for behavior, and act as building blocks for an ideology. Two ideographs will be analyzed: perfection and obedience.

Active Analysis In Secondary Education, Alisha Grant
Active Analysis In Secondary Education, Alisha Grant
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
My research project is about the use of Konstantin Stanislavski's acting method of active analysis in secondary education. I am a student teacher at a middle school this semester and I decided to utilize active analysis in my classroom. It is a method of acting that involves using movement as well as text analysis to learn more about the character an actor is embodying. Active analysis is newer to the United States and has only just in the past year had a full English translation be printed. I wanted to see if active analysis could be used just as effectively …
What's With The Web? A Cross-Culture Web Design Analysis, Dylan Johnson
What's With The Web? A Cross-Culture Web Design Analysis, Dylan Johnson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The internet has flourished into a global marketplace of goods, services, and ideas. With this surge in cross-culture interactions, we must turn our attention to the commonalities and differences in our web-based world. Despite potential language barriers, users want to interact with overseas markets. But how do westerners try to find tourism destinations? How do they shop online through overseas websites? Are there any frustrations or design differences that can create gaps? By conducting interviews with two native Japanese people who have extensively interacted with US and Japanese internet, this study hopes to hear of their perceptions and experiences with …
The Continuing Value Of 20th Century Modernist Architecture, Mattheus Wardle
The Continuing Value Of 20th Century Modernist Architecture, Mattheus Wardle
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
20th century modernist architecture has begun to age in the 21st century, and the debate of its preservation has begun as well. As the defining architectural style of the 1920s through the 1970s, modernism displayed progressive materials and ideas of the time. In its application, however, it often mirrored the societal injustices it was meant to solve. This project analyzes the various characteristics of modernist architecture and their lasting importance. By looking at the theory surrounding modernism and specific built examples, I argue that the interactions between the style and society provides a way to understand how the built environment …

One More Clever Writer Gone Wrong': A Critical Pentadic Analysis Of The Reception Of Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening', Maren Archibald
One More Clever Writer Gone Wrong': A Critical Pentadic Analysis Of The Reception Of Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening', Maren Archibald
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
In 1898, Kate Chopin was a generally well-received author of short stories, her previous works described as "clever." But after the publication of her 1899 novel "The Awakening," Chopin's reputation was destroyed. To better understand the novel's disastrous failure, I will present a pentadic analysis of two initial reviews of the novel published in local newspapers. Corse and Westervelt explain that "the dominant interpretive strategy of reviewers in 1899 was built on assumptions of reading as moral instruction and of women as selfless nurturers." Reading with these assumptions, critics were appalled at the immoral and selfish behavior depicted in the …
How Poetry Saved Nostradamus From The Pope, Alexis Julander
How Poetry Saved Nostradamus From The Pope, Alexis Julander
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
I came across the work of Nostradamus as part of a curatorial team working with books housed in special collections. Instantly, I was intrigued by the background of the man who's most enduring work is an attempt to calculate the events of the future based off the mathematics of astrology. Nostradamus was a doctor and astrologist living in France from 1503 to 1566. He wrote his first prophesies in 1550 after a visit to Italy sparked his interest in the occult. In order to keep his predictions from seeming to close to biblical prophecies, they were written using poetic forms.
When Death Strikes: How The Criminal Justice System Lets Members Of Marginalized Communities Be Victimized By Serial Killers, Crius Paulus
When Death Strikes: How The Criminal Justice System Lets Members Of Marginalized Communities Be Victimized By Serial Killers, Crius Paulus
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The variables within criminal investigations predispose members of marginalized populations to be victimized by serial killers. In this paper secondary and primary sources from the Merrill-Cazier library and internet were studied to understand the variables in and out of law enforcement control within criminal homicide investigations. Primarily, the focus was on the variables in police control–highly focused on cognitive biases. Police biases surrounding a victim's identity(ies) impacts their perceptions and responses to an investigation. Racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia within law enforcement can have explicit negative effects on investigations. The case studies of Samuel Little, the West Mesa Murders, and …
The Reality Of Therapeutic Fictional Power: Students' Use Of Fiction As A Coping Mechanism, Miranda Judson
The Reality Of Therapeutic Fictional Power: Students' Use Of Fiction As A Coping Mechanism, Miranda Judson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
This research explores the benefits of leisure and assigned reading as a coping mechanism. In this research I discovered that fiction is a powerful coping mechanism. While research has been done on Bibliotherapy, the guided use of literature for patients, clients, or students, and similar fields, no research has been done specifically on fiction or the self-guided use of fiction as a coping mechanism. I surveyed and interviewed university English students who responded that they find fiction to be soothing and that they find insight to problems they're facing when they read. I discovered that students find more insight and …
Who Are We When What We Are Changes: The Transhumanism Movement, Logan Mattson
Who Are We When What We Are Changes: The Transhumanism Movement, Logan Mattson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
The concept of humanity is changing and will continue to change as we develop technologically. Improvements in artificial limbs, the ability to print organs using stem cells, and direct neural interfaces will progress the option to improve on what people are capable of technologically and biologically to the point of raising the question 'what is human?' We must consider this question and its possible answers to know how we as a society may meet these coming changes to many of our base conceptions of identity. This paper addresses the concepts behind some of these changes and how they may impact …
Music Streaming: Artists, Labels, And Revenue, Ronald Sanders
Music Streaming: Artists, Labels, And Revenue, Ronald Sanders
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Is the current model of music streaming sustainable? I wanted to learn what problems were plaguing the music industry due to streaming. I searched to find benefits to streaming, how streaming affects artists, and how streaming affects consumers. The research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. I looked at articles published by active music journal sites, as well as sites like the New York Times, which interviewed artists affected directly by streaming. I found many problems that come with streaming, and most of these problems directly affect the artists involved. Revenue distribution …
Listening To Music While Studying, Does It Help Or Not?, Kaleb Phillips
Listening To Music While Studying, Does It Help Or Not?, Kaleb Phillips
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Many college students listen to music. Many say that it helps them focus on their schoolwork and helps them retain knowledge. When I started this research, I wanted to find ways for me to help focus on my schoolwork. I get distracted easily and find joy when I listen to some kinds of music. Does music help you focus? Does it depend on the type of music, or can it be any type? Does it work for everyone? Research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. For this study, I also performed my …
Calling Back Cursive, Kari Thompson
Calling Back Cursive, Kari Thompson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Research into the importance of cursive writing in elementary schools and whether it should still be taught. Research was conducted using library and internet recourses to locate both primary and secondary research. The conclusion was that cursive writing is most beneficial when introduced before the third grade. Cursive is easy to learn because it follows children's natural movement during brain development. Students that learn cursive perform better at spelling and written communication than those who do not. Cursive writing promotes memory retention and higher motor skills. This type of penmanship should be implemented in elementary school curriculum.
An Explanation Of Self Harm And Giving Help, Jessica Johnson
An Explanation Of Self Harm And Giving Help, Jessica Johnson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Self harm is a highly misunderstood coping mechanism that often results in stigma. Self harm is the action of hurting one's self with the intent of doing so. There are multiple factors and forms of self injury. Teenagers are the most likely to self harm due to the fact that they are not developed enough to handle emotions. Members of minorities are also more likely to self harm. People self harm for their individual reasons, but a common reason is to manage negative emotions.

Dating Apps: Proceed With Caution, Jenna Tolman
Dating Apps: Proceed With Caution, Jenna Tolman
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Dating apps are becoming increasingly more prevalent in the lives of many. This led me to ask, do dating apps lead to success for all groups of people, and what defines success for these people? To conduct this research I looked for sources in a variety of online databases, looking for both primary and secondary sources on the success rates and outcomes of using dating apps. I also used my own personal experiences with dating apps. Research for this topic was done through online databases and search engines. Through my research, exploring all sides of dating apps and taking into …
