The Artist's Arsenal: Hiv+ Women Artists, The ‘War On Aids’, And Reclaiming Illness Narratives, Mekha Varghese
Art and Art History Honors Papers
This work uses the methodologies of both art history and medical sociology through the ‘syndemic’ framework to engage in close readings of two selected artworks, Exit (1997) by Nancer LeMoins and Violation of Africa (1984) by Affrekka Jefferson. An interdisciplinary approach to these works enables consideration of how multiple marginalized identities—i.e., living with a stigmatized illness, being a woman, being LGBTQIA+, being a person of color—appear in visual art and shape illness experience; these ideas are investigated through a formal and iconographic reading of the selected artworks. Placing art as the foundation of this analysis reveals its astounding impact and …
A Psychoanalytic Reading Of Heironymus Bosch's Tondals Vision, Katelyn Doherty
A Psychoanalytic Reading Of Heironymus Bosch's Tondals Vision, Katelyn Doherty
Art and Art History Presentations
An artist is often impossible to separate from their work. Hieronymus Bosch is no exception. His unique immersion in religion, alchemy, and art influenced and are portrayed in his paintings. By looking at his painting Tondal’s Vision under the scope of both religion and psychoanalysis, it reveals new discoveries and perspectives. The theoretical framework of psychoanalysis from author, Anne D’Alleva, aids in uncovering Bosch’s obsession with religious symbolism. This suggests that he is dealing with an underlying quarrel. By discovering the 1475 manuscript of Les Visions du Chevalier Tondal (The Visions of Tondal) it reveals who “Tondal” is through the …

Museum Studies 2021 Strata Exhibition Curatorial Seminar Presentation, Kristen Cooney, Justin Mitchell, Katie Sanfield
Art and Art History Presentations
Strata, a multi-sensory installation by Canadian artist Shannon Collis on display at the Berman Museum of Art, immerses visitors in an environment of deep sonic resonance and dynamic moving images that travel above and through Alberta’s Boreal Forest, the Athabasca River, and Fort McMurray to underscore the scale of the Fort Hills Suncor Oil Sands and Syncrude Oil Plant, the third-largest known crude bitumen reservoir on the planet. As part of the programming for the exhibition, each student enrolled in the Curatorial Seminar course (MS-200B-A) planned and carried out a creative project, reached out to other communities to get them …
The Transition Of Guanyin: Reinterpreting Queerness And Buddha Nature In Medieval East Asia, Robert Wilf
The Transition Of Guanyin: Reinterpreting Queerness And Buddha Nature In Medieval East Asia, Robert Wilf
Religious Studies Honors Papers
Avalokitesvara, better known by the Chinese name of Guanyin, is perhaps the second most pervasive figure in all of Buddhism after the historical Buddha himself. Part of this popularity comes from his adaptability and willingness to change to order to save everyone, no matter what part of society they might be from. It is thanks to this adaptability that Guanyin’s iconography varies wildly by region, with much of Theravada and tantric Buddhism depicting him as a man, while Mahayana Buddhism tends to revere her as the patron of women. From their earliest description, Guanyin was known to transcend boundaries to …

The Unintended Legacy Of Hellenism: The Development And Dissemination Of The Buddha Image, Chukyi Kyaping
The Unintended Legacy Of Hellenism: The Development And Dissemination Of The Buddha Image, Chukyi Kyaping
History Honors Papers
This paper traces the development and evolution of the Buddha image from the first century CE in Gandhara to the fifth century CE in Luoyang, China and discusses the circumstances that allowed the image to adapt to different cultural environments. The emergence of the Buddha image marked a significant shift in the perception of the Buddha himself, through which Buddhism had effectively transformed from a philosophy into a religion.
Due to the syncretic nature of the Gandhari region, the Buddha image incorporated elements from multiple cultures, most notably from the Hellenistic artistic tradition. The dissemination of the Buddha image, traced …
