Thirty-seven volunteers participated in a study examining the effects of sedative music on test anxiety in college students. The experimental group used sedative music with progressive muscle relaxation and a suggestion of imagery before the scheduled hour of a final examination. The control group had self selected relaxation with no music. Baseline measurements were taken in blood pressure and pulse rates. These measurements were repeated and an anxiety inventory was administered before and after treatment. Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups in the physiological measurements. Verbal report from the anxiety inventory gave significant results at the .05 …

The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Most authorities on exercise agree that regular vigorous endurance type activity results in aerobic fitness (7, 10, 17, 36, 37). Rhythmic repetitive and dynamic activities using large muscle groups would include such aerobic exercise as Jogging, walking, swimming, cycling, tennis, basketball, racquetball, and soccer (1, 7, 10, 17). In addition, cardiovascular fitness has been suggested to be postively linked with a reduction in the incidence of coronary heart disease (1, 11, 36, 38, 53). Sometimes, problems that lead to adult illnesses are the result of lifestyles that deploy early in childhood (11). Health education procedures have been used to provide …

The Effect Of Television Viewing On College Students : An Eeg Analysis Of Cerebral Asymmetry, William B. Sheffel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The controversy over the effects of television viewing on human behavior has drawn a great deal of attention over the last decade. This study sought to investigate this area by looking at cortical response to television viewing.

The subjects in the study consisted of 24 men and 24 women (m=l9 .6 years) who were monitored for bilateral EEG alpha (8-13 Hz) brain wave production while viewing a television commercial (verbal and nonverbal/ spatial) and were then tested for recall at the end of the session.

The analysis of variance for a split-plot factorial design (S.P.F. 222.43; Kirk, 1968) revealed that …

The Great Task : Prosody And Songs Of Innocence, Biff Faunce Jan 1984

The Great Task : Prosody And Songs Of Innocence, Biff Faunce

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

While eschewing a strict definition on the didacticism of Blake's imaginative vision, the following four analyses could be said to revolve around three general themes. These are: (1) that Songs of Innocence engage in a dialectic, much of their appeal deriving from the tension created between the co-existence of so-called qualities of "innocence" and "experience"; (2) that each one is an individual attempt to reconcile these, as well as other, oppositions; and (3) that such a reconciliation is hierarchical, usually concluding on a transcendent or visionary plane. The first three center on the text and metrical phenomena. In "The Ecchoing …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During most of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth numerous railroads were built throughout America. Some. grew into gigantic systems with names we recognize today; Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Chesapeake & Ohio. Others faded into oblivion. But all, successful or not, were built to fill transportation needs.

In Tuolumne County, California, located along the Mother. Lode and stretching into the high Sierra Nevada, the first railroad reached the county in 1897. By World War I a number of rail lines had been built. Several, having served their purpose, had already been removed by …
