El Parque Histórico Nacional Del Campo De Batalla De Palo Alto Conmemora De Manera Muy Genuina Una Batalla De La Guerra Entre Estados Unidos Y México., Bob Janiskee
Summer Institute June 2019

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Minority students in the United States (US) need to connect with the curriculum in order to have a meaningful schooling experience. This paper promotes the integration of culturally relevant books into the bilingual and English as a second language (ESL) curriculum for Hispanic English language learners (ELLs). A study was conducted with bilingual and ESL pre-service teachers who learned about the benefits of using culturally relevant books in their teacher preparation program. Pre-service teachers realized that culturally relevant books connect Hispanic ELLs to the curriculum and engage them in reading. Through the study, participants gained confidence working with ELLs and …

Journal of South Texas English Studies
The article offers a methodological approach that examines the relationship between film and women's history at the turn of the twentieth century. It highlights the close comparison of two Hollywood films including "Sense and Sensibility" and "Thelma and Louise." In addition, the comparison between the two films intend to draw attention to the ways the respective receptions of the films created a binary opposition between the poles of feminism and conservatism. It also mentions that the films shared the same literary structure that concentrates the complexity of female character by exhibiting the ways of equality in different women.

The Lotus Sutra As Rhetorical Doctrine: Toward A Spiritual Paradigm Shift In Academia, Erec Smith

The article explores a new approach on the relationship between religion and academia. It highlights the application of St. Augustine's "On Christian Doctrine" on Ciceronian tactics to teaching, praising and motivating based on scripture. Review Of How Cities Won The West: Four Centuries Of Urban Change In Western North America, Linda English
Review Of How Cities Won The West: Four Centuries Of Urban Change In Western North America, Linda English
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
By invoking the intentionally provocative phrase "Won the West," Carl Abbott's tide alerts readers of two important themes outlined in his story: the centrality and, indeed, "triumph" of cities on the western landscape and the author's desire to situate cities at die heart of historical debates on the American West. Regarding the latter point, his book is as much a history of the North American West as it is a history of cities within it—a relationship inextricably linked. Abbott also traces the changes western cities experienced from their earliest frontier stage to their present-day status as centers for global innovation. …

The Joy Of Difference: Foucault And Hadot On The Aesthetic And The Universal In Philosophy, Cory Wimberly
The Joy Of Difference: Foucault And Hadot On The Aesthetic And The Universal In Philosophy, Cory Wimberly
Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations
The intersection of Foucault and Hadot's work in the philosophy of antiquity is a dense and fruitful meeting. Not only do each of the philosophers offer competing interpretations of antiquity, their differences also reflect on their opposing assessments of the contemporary situation and the continuing philosophical debate between the universal and the relative. Unpacking these two philosophers’ disagreements on antiquity sheds light on how Hadot’s commitment to the Universal and Foucault’s commitment to an aesthetics of existence stem from their diagnoses of the present and the persistent philosophical issue of universalism. This line of analysis is especially productive to pursue …

Irregulars: Guerrilla And Ranchero Warfare In South Texas And Northern Mexico During The Mexican - American War, James Mills
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
The overall outcome of the Mexican - American War (1846-1848) was determined largely by regular military forces. There was, however, another war within this war waged by irregulars, guerrillas, and rancheros from Mexico, as well as by Texas Rangers and elements within the U.S. volunteers. Although these forces were important to both sides in the war effort, people most often remember them for the atrocities they committed.
