Speed-Testing In Audio Engineering Education: An Imperative Assessment Tool, Barry G. Atticks
Speed-Testing In Audio Engineering Education: An Imperative Assessment Tool, Barry G. Atticks
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Multiple choice tests, fill-in the blanks, and essay question assessments do have their place in academia, but for students preparing for careers as studio engineers, live engineers, and producers, other assessments that test readiness for troubleshooting “real-world” problems in audio technology are needed. Being able to quickly solve signal flow issues is crucial whether it is for a high paying client in the studio or a rock band during a live show for 10,000 fans. It is well-documented that experiential learning is key in audio education, but I argue that it is not just the ability to complete hands-on tasks …
The Status Of Technology Integration In Music Classrooms And Implications For Technology Training: A Survey Of K-12 Music Educators In Four Southeastern States, Lynn M. Holliman
The Status Of Technology Integration In Music Classrooms And Implications For Technology Training: A Survey Of K-12 Music Educators In Four Southeastern States, Lynn M. Holliman
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
This study investigated the status of technology integration in K-12 music classrooms after the onset of Covid-19 across Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Participants completed an online survey concerning their technology use, comfort levels with technology, training since the onset of Covid-19, and barriers to technology integration. Previous studies in this area showed a slow increase in technology use. Other studies revealed a need for further training of pre-service and in-service educators to integrate technology into their instruction successfully.
Results of this survey revealed an increase in technology use and comfort levels with technology specific to distance learning such as …
Teaching Signal Processing Design For Effect Pedals: Making Signal Processing Tangible, V J. Manzo, Ryan Mckenna, Matthew Halper
Teaching Signal Processing Design For Effect Pedals: Making Signal Processing Tangible, V J. Manzo, Ryan Mckenna, Matthew Halper
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Teaching digital audio processes and their uses in musical contexts is a challenging subject area for music technology instructors. While there are many books and resources that explain audio processes using diagrams and charts that merely require the reader to have modest skills in mathematics, computer science, or electrical engineering, these extra-musical subjects still pose great challenges for music students. Given the time and scope limitations implicit in a single semester, pedagogy for effects processes often has to be reduced to qualitative descriptions and audio examples. The more ambitious task of implementing such processes, realizing an algorithm via a plugin …
Defining The Hourglass Framework Of Technical And Musical Concepts In Music Technology Education With Two Case Studies In Course Development, Timothy Hsu
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
As the field of music technology connects music with a vast array of technical fields, a mature music technology program ideally challenges and develops students that incorporate musical contexts of technical ideas and the technical concepts of musical ideas. The educational challenge of music technology programs lies in the balancing of technical and musical material in the curriculum. In structuring this balance, this paper proposes an hourglass framework, where music technology sits at the neck of two sides, where one side is built on the tradition of Western and non-Western music history, theory, and repertoire, and the other side is …
Constructivist Peer Review In Music Theory And Composition Courses: Technologies And Practice, Brendan Mcconville
Constructivist Peer Review In Music Theory And Composition Courses: Technologies And Practice, Brendan Mcconville
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
This article considers the supporting technologies and practices for effective semi-anonymous peer review in traditional music theory and composition-related courses: orchestration, arranging, and composition. A coordinated approach probes two questions nested within one broad case study: (1) does the use of peer review in music theory and composition-related courses create meaningful, constructivist-inspired learning experiences, and (2) what web technologies can efficiently and effectively accomplish its activities? The article first provides a constructivist theoretical framework; next, it explains the methodologies, technologies, and resulting feedback from using peer review in a three-course study; and finally it provides concluding remarks on the many …
Virtual Piano Instruction For The College Learner, Gena Greher, Dominique Haughton, Jacob Hiser, Brandon Vaccaro
Virtual Piano Instruction For The College Learner, Gena Greher, Dominique Haughton, Jacob Hiser, Brandon Vaccaro
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
This article investigates the affordability and feasibility of conducting virtual piano lessons for the college level learner. It proposes an approach that works well and requires equipment costing approximately $300 per student. We outline the pros and cons of conducting virtual piano lessons online. The main benefit is overcoming geographical distances, whereas limitations include challenges such as the instructor being able to check issues such as fingerings or dynamics. Latency is not a major problem as long as only one person is playing at any given time, as found in past work. The process of teaching and learning online requires …
Considering Best Practices In Technical Ear Training, Wellington Gordon
Considering Best Practices In Technical Ear Training, Wellington Gordon
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Technical Ear Training (TET) is a new approach to preparing audio students for the professional environment. Systematic training develops the listening skills of student engineers and advances them as sensitive listeners. However, the current educational landscape lacks a nationally recognized curriculum that addresses specific characteristics of technical ear training. These characteristics include frequency identification (both boosts and cuts), gain, phase shift, delays, reverb times, and dynamics parameters. Targeted ear training methods can help students refine their technical listening skills and gain an increased technical vocabulary. This paper investigates multiple approaches to technical ear training, including data from an actual class …
Getting Started With Electronic Music: An Open Course In Music Technology, Robert Willey
Getting Started With Electronic Music: An Open Course In Music Technology, Robert Willey
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
The curriculum for a music technology course is presented that is divided into four areas: digital audio sound manipulation, MIDI arranging and sequencing, online notation, and music videos. The course material is open to the public online and the skills that are developed while working through it can be of use to most music majors and to many of their professors in their work making music and teaching.
The class is activity-based and taught in a flipped classroom with minimal lecturing. Students study the online material and come to class prepared to work through the tutorials during supervised lab sessions. …
Catering Group Piano Curriculum For The Music Educators Of The Next Generation, Chee Hyeon Choi Dr.
Catering Group Piano Curriculum For The Music Educators Of The Next Generation, Chee Hyeon Choi Dr.
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Advances in consumer technology have drastically changed the ways students access and appreciate music. As a result, teaching materials in group piano curriculum have become quickly outdated. Students no longer recognize folk tunes that have been sung or used for harmonization exercises; they prefer to listen and play music on their playlist stored in their mobile devices. Although pedagogical principles and objectives should persist over time, teaching methodologies and materials should continuously be updated to increase students’ engagement in learning. The newer generation of students favor classes that are more practical, satisfy their personal interests, and meet their degree program …
Dynamic Uses Of Spectrographic Analysis In Choral Rehearsals And The Voice Studio, Mark Mcquade
Dynamic Uses Of Spectrographic Analysis In Choral Rehearsals And The Voice Studio, Mark Mcquade
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Spectrographic analysis is a powerful tool that allows students to see a visual representation of the acoustic properties of their instruments. For today’s technologically savvy students it brings an exciting new element to music making that will allow them to grow musically, artistically, and technically even faster. With a computer, microphone, and screen (or even just a smart phone) teachers can open their students’ eyes to see what their ears have always been hearing. By turning an aural/oral art into a visual experience, students will gain a deeper understanding of their instruments and how they can use those instruments efficiently …
