Description of the Papers: The Georgia Shaw Prescott Papers are contained within 3 series. The first series consists of numerous songs and poems all written by her, as well as personal notes and edits of her work. The second series contains sheet music, song lyrics, and essays. The third and final series is comprised of artwork by Ruth Scott (a local artist who collaborated with Georgia Shaw Prescott), newspaper clippings, business letters, and personal letters, in addition to a collection of miscellaneous papers whose purpose is not quite clear. Edith Meserve Rice was a student at Gorham Normal School 1942-1946, and was active in the Alumni Association from the 1970s through the 1990s. The Papers include photographs and other material documenting Rice's life as a student at Gorham Normal School in the early 1940s, as well as alumni news, songs of Gorham Normal School and the State of Maine, and information about Gorham State Teachers College and the University of Southern Maine.

Description:

Miriam Andrews was a Gorham Normal School music teacher from 1922 to 1960. She had attended the New England Conservatory of Music and Julliard School of Music in New York. She continued her education at Columbia University’s Teachers College where she received her Bachelors and Masters degrees. During her teaching tenure at Gorham Normal School, she directed plays, organized concerts and operettas, and in 1925 compiled a music book for the school called Songs of Gorham Normal School. We examined the influence of music on mood by instructing 81 undergraduate students to complete the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List–Revised (MAACLR) both before and after watching a 15-min video that was or was not paired with a piece of music. The 2 music categories were pleasant or depressing. Participants from the depressing group experienced a drop in positive affect, whereas participants from the pleasant group showed an increase on this measure. Men from the pleasant group had the highest pretreatment and lowest post treatment anxiety scores, whereas the women displayed no change in anxiety. The results indicate that music …
