The Oppenheimer Case, Shelby Murray Dec 1967

The Oppenheimer Case, Shelby Murray

Honors Theses

This paper is an attempt to understand the hearing of Dr. Julius Robert Oppenheimer in the light of the American state of mind. In doing so, I have considered only those events which helped to form that state of mind, or those persons who participated in the hearings. For this reason a great deal of material has not been included in the paper. I will not consider World War II nor the period following, except insofar as it is relevant to the hearing. Nor will I explore the McCarthy hearings. Only those areas of Oppenheimer's life which had a bearing …

The Sherman Adams Case, Jean A. Scott Dec 1967

The Sherman Adams Case, Jean A. Scott

Honors Theses

In my study of the events culminating in the resignation of Sherman Adams from the position of Assistant to the President in 1958, I have endeavored to deal with three factors: the Adams-Goldfine relationship studied by the Congressional committee, the politicians' reaction to the information disclosed there, and the position taken by national publications. I have included a brief statement of Adams' early life and his duties as Assistant to the President for background purposes, but otherwise, I have brought in material about the man himself or the Eisenhower administration only as it relates to the case.

Adams' contacts with …

A Survey Of Kenneth B. Keating's Legislative Image Relative To The Domestic Issues During The Years 1947-1958, Carl C. Moore Jr Aug 1967

A Survey Of Kenneth B. Keating's Legislative Image Relative To The Domestic Issues During The Years 1947-1958, Carl C. Moore Jr

Master's Theses

Upstate New York, a term commonly used to denote that area outside the environs of Metropolitan New York City, could have boasted of many favorite sons over the years. A current example, Kenneth B. Keating, is the topic of this survey.

Essentially this work was meant as a record of characteristic legislative commitments made by the Congressman relative to domestic concerns during his years of service in the House of Representatives. However, since the initial efforts were motivated by the author's interest in discovering the basis for Mr. Keating's continuing success at the polls, it was determined that the actual …

Characterization Of Stephen Dedalus In James Joyce's Stephen Hero And A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, Reuben L. Musgrave

Master's Theses

Our main interest is in showing the new light given Joyce's works by the study of Stephen Hero, the new light in particular on the character of Stephen Dedalus.

Sherwood Anderson, Dramatist, Brenda H. Renalds Aug 1967

Sherwood Anderson, Dramatist, Brenda H. Renalds

Master's Theses

Sherwood Anderson published only a few plays and, beside his lasting contributions to American literature (such as Winesburg, Ohio), these plays are of little literary value. To the student of Anderson, however, they are important not only because they reflect one of the many facts of Anderson's interest in literature but also because, near the end of his life, his dramatic attempts reflect concern for his literary career. Although his interest in the theater began early, he turned to the writing of plays later when suffered through long periods of time in which he could not crate the kind of …

The Individual And The Problem Of Self-Definition In Faulkner : Isolation And Gesture In Light In August, The Sound And The Fury, Absalom, Absalom!, And As I Lay Dying, Betty Jean Seymour Aug 1967

The Individual And The Problem Of Self-Definition In Faulkner : Isolation And Gesture In Light In August, The Sound And The Fury, Absalom, Absalom!, And As I Lay Dying, Betty Jean Seymour

Master's Theses

Perhaps the primary task of the writer is the communication of that which is most significant in human experience. This paper has grown out of an interest in contemporary literature as an expression of this function. Literature, like other art forms, can appraise, analyze, reflect, and, sometimes, provide direction for, the plight of modern man.

Jane Austen's Use Of The Epistolary Method, Barbara Tavss Bender Jul 1967

Jane Austen's Use Of The Epistolary Method, Barbara Tavss Bender

Master's Theses

There is . . . a prominent use of letters within the novels of Jane Austen. It has been shown that she wao influenced by Samuel Richardson and Fanny Burney and that she had a long experimental period of almost exclusive use of the epistolary method. It is from their influence and from her experimentation that the six major novels evolved; this supreme achievement was to give their creator a prominent place in the history of the English novel. No one factor can be cited as Miss Austen 's outstanding contribution, for each novel is a synthesis of many superior …

The New British Drama 1956-1966 : A Critical Study Of Four Dramatists: John Osborne, Brendan Behan, Arnold Wesker, And John Arden, Jeanne Fenrick Bedell Jul 1967

The New British Drama 1956-1966 : A Critical Study Of Four Dramatists: John Osborne, Brendan Behan, Arnold Wesker, And John Arden, Jeanne Fenrick Bedell

Master's Theses

In the history of England, as well as in the history of the English stage, 1956 was a momentous year. It was the year of the Suez, the year that saw the destruction of the myth of the British empire. And it was the year of the Hungarian Revolution, which crushed liberal illusions about Soviet Russia. In 1956 the old idols were crumbling fast, and defense of tradition was fast becoming not only impossible but ludicrous. The bankruptcy of the older generation was apparent; it was time for the new to speak out.

Sayler's Creek : A Battlefield, A Park, Peter Warren Eldredge Jul 1967

Sayler's Creek : A Battlefield, A Park, Peter Warren Eldredge

Master's Theses

The significance in history of the land area known as Sayler's Creek is derived from the fact that the last major conflict between Union and Confederate forces was fought there on April 6, 1865. The battle has been neglected because it immediately precedes the surrender; however, the engagement does contain valuable historical information.

Chaucer's Pandarus : A Character Study, Phillip Valentine Daffron Jul 1967

Chaucer's Pandarus : A Character Study, Phillip Valentine Daffron

Master's Theses

Chaucer 's Pandarus has been an intriguing character for me ever since my first exposure, as an undergraduate, to Troilus and Criseyde. Pandarus interests me because he is true to human nature in that he is not consistently one way all of the time. Like most human beings, Pandarus has many facets to his nature; therefore, I find it distressing that many critics and students of Chaucer will not acknowledge this complexity but rather tend to want to stereotype him. If Pandarus were a simple, transparent character, then his rank in English literature would be considerably less significant. It is …

William Roane Aylett, 1833-1900, Joseph P. Harahan Jul 1967

William Roane Aylett, 1833-1900, Joseph P. Harahan

Master's Theses

This thesis grew out of a paper presented in Dr. Joseph C. Robert's Civil War Seminar in January, 1967. At that time the topic was limited to a study of the subject with only a cursory narrative of his life.

The decision to expand this topic into a full biography was based on two factors. First, the need for such a study was pointed out by military historian Theodore Ropp in an article in the South Atlantic Quarterly on the Civil War. The second factor involved the material available for this biographical study. In 1966, a large manuscript collection (approx. …

History Of Richmond Baptists, 1780-1860, Roland Stuart Carlton Jul 1967

History Of Richmond Baptists, 1780-1860, Roland Stuart Carlton

Master's Theses

Organized Baptist work began in Richmond in June, 1780. Several families belonging to the Boar Swamp Baptist Church in Henrico County had moved into the Richmond area. The distance, the road conditions, and the modes of travel made it difficult for these people to worship regularly at their church. Their pastor, Joshua Morris, also realized their problem, During the month of June, 1780, he met with these folks at the home of Mr. John Franklin, located on the northeast corner of Carrington and Pink Streets in the east end of Richmond. There were fourteen in attendance. Together they had prayer …

Iron Vs. Gold : A Study Of The Three Anglo-Dutch Wars, 1652-1674, William Terry Curtler Jul 1967

Iron Vs. Gold : A Study Of The Three Anglo-Dutch Wars, 1652-1674, William Terry Curtler

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show that, as the result of twenty-two years of intermittent warfare between England and the Netherlands, the English navy became established as the primary naval power of Europe. Also, I intend to illustrate that, as a by-product of this naval warfare, Dutch trade was seriously hurt, with the·major benefactors of this Dutch loss of trade being the English.

This paper grew out of a seminar paper on the first Anglo-Dutch war for a Tudor and Stuart English History graduate seminar class taught in the fall of 1966 by Dr. John R. Rilling …

The History And Development Of Port Facilities Of The Chesapeake And Ohio Railway Company, Newport News, Virginia, Ronald Winborne Odom

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to present a survey of the history and ·development of port facilities of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad at Newport News, Virginia. This survey will cover the embryonic existence of the Port during the Colonial Period and trace its slow but progressive development up to and including the present day.

Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell Apr 1967

Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell

Master's Theses

A general study of Marlowe 's cosmology may by no means be original, for numerous critics have mentioned the subject in varying degrees; however, there is a wide disparity or opinion concerning the relative importance of the subject in relation to the playwright. This study is not exhaustive; it is significant, however, because it attempts to prove by means of biographical and historical backgrounds the idea that Marlowe had an intellect that was always "climbing after knowledge infinite."

In this study there are two obvious omissions: the plays Dido, Queen of Carthage, and The Massacre at Paris. …

Herbert's Household Imagery, Christina Hillquist Halsted Apr 1967

Herbert's Household Imagery, Christina Hillquist Halsted

Master's Theses

The apparent simplicity of George Herbert's poetry has caused much comment and much misunderstanding of both the man and his poetry. The popular nineteenth-century picture of Herbert as the simple, tranquil country priest is being discarded, however, as twentieth-century scholars of metaphysical poetry re-exa mine both the works and life of George Herbert and find little simple about his life and a magnificent craftsmanship in his poetry.

Both the simplicity and the depth of Herbert's poetry lie in his imagery, in which concrete everyday objects and actions become high abstractions usually difficult to express. Of course, the presentation of abstractions …

Alexander Moseley, Editor Of The Richmond Whig, Harrison Moseley Ethridge Apr 1967

Alexander Moseley, Editor Of The Richmond Whig, Harrison Moseley Ethridge

Master's Theses

The following pages are the study or a man, Alexander Moseley, and of the newspaper with which he was intimately connected for forty-tive years

There are, admittedly gaps in the study. The period of Know-Knothingism is omitted, for example, because no substantial material could be found to show his associations during the era. At other times, much more material could be found concerning Moseley's personal life than on his public life. And, of course, often it is difficult to prove that an editorial opinion was necessarily his.

Alexander Moseley's career was unique, however, in the great span of history it …

Some General Observations On Mass Composition In The Renaissance, Charles Lathan Hill Apr 1967

Some General Observations On Mass Composition In The Renaissance, Charles Lathan Hill

Honors Theses

As seen in the six Masses studied in this paper, the composition of a Mass presented a Renaissance composer with both problems and opportunities. Some of the problems encountered, as we have seen, were the clear declamation of the text, effective word-setting, the achievement of contrast and variety throught hte use of many devices, and an efffective means of unifying the work as a whole. The Mass cycle, in addition to enjoying veneration as a tradition, and depsite the problems which it held for a composer, offered him the chance to express himself and demonstrate his mastery of musical skills …

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson Jan 1967

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show how various plays written in the 1930's reflected economic, political, religious, social, psychological, moral and ethical attitudes of the depression years. To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.

Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools Jan 1967

Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools

Honors Theses

The condition of Virginia in 1710 was depressed, both politically and economically. A royal colony, Virginia nevertheless had been establishing her own common laws and "ancient" practices, at the the same time that English control was becoming increasingly inefficient. The situation worsened during the administrations of Edmund Andros and Francis Nicholson and reach a minor climax during the four-year interregnum which began in 1706 and lasted until Spotswood assumed leadership of the government in 1710.

During this period when lack of a royal governor placed colonial affairs in the hands of the Virginia Council and its president, the work of …

Archetypal Patterns Of Death And Rebirth In The Mature Poetry Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Frank Thomas Hanenkrat Jan 1967

Archetypal Patterns Of Death And Rebirth In The Mature Poetry Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Frank Thomas Hanenkrat

Master's Theses

This paper attempts to establish a viewpoint from which the mature poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins may be seen in an informing light. The method of the paper is to trace "exponents" -- that is, images, words or objects that form motifs or patterns in the poetry. Similar to leitmotifs in music, literary motifs are likewise used to set forth themes. By tracing exponents we are "recognizing patterns of images and symbols that lead us to a consistently deepening appreciation of the literature. Image leads to image, idea to idea, until ultimately we are led to experience the 'meaning' of …

The Joyce Menagerie : Animal Imagery In The First Three Novels, David A. Dewitt Jan 1967

The Joyce Menagerie : Animal Imagery In The First Three Novels, David A. Dewitt

Master's Theses

If James Joyce l:ad written novels with largely rural settings, like many written by Lawrence and Faulkner, it would not be particularly unusual to find many references to animals and birds. However, Joyce's novels take place in Dublin, which certainly is not the ideal habitat for large numbers of animals; and yet the number of references to animals and birds in his novels is astounding. The brief portion of Stephen Hero contains nearly fifty primary references, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has ninety-four, and there are more than eight hundred in Ulysses. Not only is the …

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker Jan 1967

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to test the theory of cognitive dissonance as it relates to a reader's selectivity in reading controversial material involving his personal prejudices or attitudes. Festinger states that forced or accidental exposure to new information which tends to increase dissonance will frequently result in misinterpretation and misperception of the new information by the individual thus exposed in an effort to avoid a dissonance increase. Therefore, cognitive dissonance theory would predict that a person's prejudiced attitude would negatively effect his reading comprehension on material which was disharmonious with his attitude. The dissonance situation examined here is …

Shelley's Prometheus Unbound : A Critical Analysis And Interpretation, Emily Carol Braxton Jan 1967

Shelley's Prometheus Unbound : A Critical Analysis And Interpretation, Emily Carol Braxton

Master's Theses

As a basis for Prometheus Unbound, which he completed in 1819 and which is his masterpiece, Shelley used Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound. Shelley used the Prometheus myth to express his own ideas about present evils and his hopes for man's future as a result of his belief that man was capable of perfectibility.

Southern Baptist Missions In China 1945-1951, Garnett Lee White Jan 1967

Southern Baptist Missions In China 1945-1951, Garnett Lee White

Master's Theses

This thesis developed from a seminar paper on the South China Mission of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1945-1951, prepared for Dr. R. Barry Westin in the tall of 1965. Though the scope of this present study includes Southern Baptist Missions in all of China during the same period, its purpose remains the same. That purpose is to present the course of the evangelical outreach or this large Protestant denomination, and the progress made in establishing an indigenous Christian movement in China before the Communists forced the withdrawal of all missionary personnel.

Virginia's Initial Reactions To The Brown V. Board Of Education Decision, Charles E. Poston Jan 1967

Virginia's Initial Reactions To The Brown V. Board Of Education Decision, Charles E. Poston

Honors Theses

In writing this paper I have examined the initial reaction of Virginia's leaders to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Brown v. Board of Education suit. My study begins with announcement of the decision on May 17, 1952. As the weeks passed on the Commonwealth of Virginia gradually changed her course, experimented with expedients, and set her mind on the course of resistance. the General Assembly proved this fact by adopting the Resolution of Interposition on February 1, 1956. A natural termination date for the paper is reached at this point.

Throughout the paper there has been no effort …
