Initiation Practices And Access To Higher Education For Deaf Students: The Interpreter As A Resource, Susana Barbosa, Ana Oliveira, Fernanda Teixeira
Initiation Practices And Access To Higher Education For Deaf Students: The Interpreter As A Resource, Susana Barbosa, Ana Oliveira, Fernanda Teixeira
Journal of Interpretation
The transition from secondary school to higher education institutions (HEIs) can be a very exciting experience, but it can also represent unique challenges, making this moment a crucial event in the academic path of all students. Academic initiation practices are a tradition that exists on several universities campuses with the purpose of promoting students' integration into academic life during such an important transition.
It is important to analyse the participation of deaf students in initiation practices to higher education and the sign language interpreters' role in including them in this process. Sixteen deaf students of HEIs in the Porto region …
Alligator Skull, Katherine Weaver
Alligator Skull, Katherine Weaver
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
Alligator Skull was created through mimicking the shadows on the bones of a giant creature with the dots of my pen. Living in Florida, I have known these animals my entire life, and I have been mesmerized by them the whole time. To see one humbled into a skeleton form is so intriguing. They are apex predators that encompass fear in many, but they are just as mortal as the rest of us. They only kill to survive, but the power they possess over the waters has humans either petrified or entranced. This individual from the Alligator mississippiensis …
Jane Eyre, The Invisible Bisexual: Bisexual Erasure In Historical Literature, Christine L. Roland
Jane Eyre, The Invisible Bisexual: Bisexual Erasure In Historical Literature, Christine L. Roland
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
The purpose of this article is to reveal Charlotte Brontë’s canonized heterosexual character Jane Eyre as bisexual and explain why critics unintentionally erase bisexuality in historical literature. Homosexuality emerged as a species in the 1800s, but the heterosexual-versus-homosexual binary scale overlooked bisexuality. Yet, bisexuality existed—and Victorian society encouraged it between women. Lesbianism and female “friendships” were promoted within female boarding schools and between women in heterosexual marriages; the precise relationships exemplified in Jane Eyre. Though Jane marries a man, her heterosexual “familial” marriage emerges only out of her bisexual nature, for she does not marry Rochester until he becomes effeminate. …
Leafy Sea Dragon, Phycodurus Sp., Kennedi X. Light
Leafy Sea Dragon, Phycodurus Sp., Kennedi X. Light
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
Leafy sea dragons, Phycodurus sp. are part of the Syngnathidae family. Syngnathidae is a genus made up of seahorses, pipefishes, and sea dragons. All three of the species are known to have beautiful patterning. However, leafy sea dragons got their name from their leafy appendages like their fins and limbs. The reason I chose to draw a leafy sea dragon is due to my own interest in astrobiology. Astrobiology is the study of life in the universe and astrobiologists look for signs of life within the universe. I would like to be an astrobiologist one day and focus …
Author Vs. Audience: Bridging The Gap Between Interpretation And Intent, Adrian R. Ross
Author Vs. Audience: Bridging The Gap Between Interpretation And Intent, Adrian R. Ross
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Since Roland Barthes first published his essay “Le mort de l’auteur” (“The death of the author”) in the 1960s, literary critics have reconsidered the role of the author in the interpretation of media. Barthes and others have argued that the author’s intentions matter little after a work of art is handed off for public consumption, and that art is up for interpretation with the audience playing a greater role in its meaning. Others, however, argue that the author is the ultimate authority on the meaning of their work, and that authorial intent is the most important aspect to consider when …
North Florida Trees, Joshua M. Kuss
North Florida Trees, Joshua M. Kuss
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
I began exploring manipulation and fabrication in the darkroom after a workshop in Alexander Diaz’s Introduction to Photography course. I have always had an affinity for nature, especially trees. I was especially moved by the barren trees seen during a cold North Florida winter. Growing up in Florida, I’m used to seeing the vast greenery brought by these trees, but there was just something about their emptiness during winter that really struck me. I wanted to capture and print them in a way that emphasized these qualities. Black and white film paired with splattering in the darkroom was …
The Florida Scrub-Jay, Emily Hill
The Florida Scrub-Jay, Emily Hill
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
The Florida Scrub-Jay is a digital scientific illustration of Aphelocoma coerulescens, the only native bird species endemic to Florida. This piece celebrates the natural beauty of the Florida scrub-jay and its key features that allow it to thrive in scrub habitats. These habitats are threatened by anthropogenic activity and climate change, leading to the fragmentation, degradation, or eventual loss of these areas. Through this artwork, I hope to emphasize the importance of conservation and inspire viewers to appreciate and protect this bird species.
Every stroke and color choice were carefully considered to accurately depict the bird’s physical attributes. …
Burning Through The Shell, Ethan Harmon
Burning Through The Shell, Ethan Harmon
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
“Burning Through the Shell” embodies the process of freeing myself from my inner turmoil. By pouring molten iron into a wooden trough, the iron burns and scorches its way through the wooden exterior, leaving behind only the remnants as it cools and frees itself from its temporary shell. This destructive yet creative act represents shedding my shell of social anxiety and insecurity, emerging stronger and more resilient. Throughout my life, I have always struggled with “coming out of my shell” and dealing with my mental health in a positive way. However, once I discovered my passion for sculpture …
The Sephardic-Mizrahi Moment: Cultural Renewal, Jewish-Arab Rapprochement And Zionism In The 1920s, Boaz Israel Levy
The Sephardic-Mizrahi Moment: Cultural Renewal, Jewish-Arab Rapprochement And Zionism In The 1920s, Boaz Israel Levy
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
This study examines the Sephardic-Mizrahi nationalist strategy in the British and French mandates of the early 20th century. Scholars including Abigail Jacobson, Moshe Naor, and Yitzhak Bezalel indicate this community developed a unique approach to nationalism. Utilizing Alex Winder’s conceptual framework for violence, Yehuda Shamir’s conceptual framework for culture and Rashid Khalidi’s analytical framework, this study broadens the research on Sephardic-Mizrahi communities, the development of 20th century nationalism, and the origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Drawing on correspondences, reports and newspapers, this paper argues a Sephardic-Mizrahi Moment began by 1925, employing institutions— such as activist organizations and the press—to simultaneously …
Beyond The Veil, Noah S. Constantino
Beyond The Veil, Noah S. Constantino
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
The philosophy behind my work is accented by this process in the sense of its micro-complexity. The idea of reshaping a flat surface to mimic complex topography coincides with the question I’ve been asking myself throughout making this work: What is outside of our structured and contrived reality and what does that look like? The complexity of depth within the process and the constant re-evaluation of the surface of the print is a parallel attempt to answer this fundamental question. To answer this, the fear of the unknown will always be present, but we must not let its complexity distract …
Irish Sign Language Interpreter Workplace Wellness During Covid-19: Looking Back And Moving Forward, Sarah Sheridan, Joanne O'Donnell
Irish Sign Language Interpreter Workplace Wellness During Covid-19: Looking Back And Moving Forward, Sarah Sheridan, Joanne O'Donnell
Journal of Interpretation
This study aims to provide insights into the impact of COVID-19 on the Irish Sign Language Interpreting profession in regards workplace wellbeing and occupational health. A two-staged mixed method data collection took place in the form of an anonymous online survey followed by focus groups. This captured work practices throughout the pandemic, the impact it had on Ssign Language Interpreters (SLIs), as well as mechanisms employed regarding wellness and self-care. The results reveal many issues impacting SLIs in Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic, including drastic decreases in workload, and a forced transition into an online environment. The sudden shift to …
