Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Digital Projects Showcase Exhibitor During the Summer 2020 semester, I participated in the course DIG3152 Intro to Electronic Textual Editing, taught by Dr. Clayton McCarl of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, during which I worked to edit two letters from the 1840s by Jacksonville resident Elisa Hatch. I transcribed and encoded the documents using TEI-XML, and created the exhibit to explain them. In the Fall 2020 semester, with the assistance of a generous grant from the UNF Office of Undergraduate Research as well as support from Dr. McCarl, Susan Swiatosz, and Jennifer Bibb, I was able to conduct …

Israel's Ethnic Cleansing Of Palestinians, Bria Riepe Apr 2021

Israel's Ethnic Cleansing Of Palestinians, Bria Riepe

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The carving of Palestine to create a ‘Jewish State’, Israel, has imposed upon the Israeli and Palestinian people the necessity of separation on highly unequal terms and qualities of human existence. Since Israel’s creation, millions of Palestinians have been forcibly removed from their homes, displaced, rendered refugees, and continue to exist under severe Israeli military occupation. According to Israeli immigration laws, displaced Palestinians are prohibited from returning to their homes, joining their families in Israel or the occupied territories, and even from entering the ever-expanding borders of Israel. This has occurred alongside a high immigration rate through Israel’s Law of …

Political Influences By The Catholic Church And Spanish Government In Colonial Mexico, Dorian Barboza Apr 2021

Political Influences By The Catholic Church And Spanish Government In Colonial Mexico, Dorian Barboza

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

The land of Mexico prior to colonization was composed of various large cities that upon colonization much of the land became New Spain. During this pre independence era of Mexico’s history the Indians were subjected to many changes in their culture through the Catholic Church and the Spanish Government. Religious conversion was accepted by the Indians as means to stop directed violence to the unconverted. The multidialectal cultures embraced Castilian as a common language that facilitated communication with the Spanish colonizers and between villages. The desire to integrate into the new Catholic and Spanish system gave rise to Indian litigation …

Christianity’S Impact On Deaf Culture In Latin America, Alexzandra Newman Apr 2021

Christianity’S Impact On Deaf Culture In Latin America, Alexzandra Newman

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

International Research Symposium Exhibitor and Project of Merit

For hundreds of years, Christianity has made a huge impact on Latin America with at least 90% of people claiming to be part of one of its various denominations. This impact can be seen even in minority communities like the Deaf community. Historically, many churches had a tendency to shun the Deaf population due to the idea of the individual or family sinning greatly. However, this mindset began to shift once Deaf schools were established and churches began to welcome Deaf people into their services. Going forward, this poster will look at …

Obesity Among Hispanics: The Relationship To Lifestyles, Socioeconomic Characteristics, And Education, Stacey Harmer

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Honorable Mention Winner

In the Hispanic community, there are multiple factors that increase the probability of obesity. Among them are the diets and changes in diets over the past several decades, lifestyles and urbanization that have promoted sedentarism, status in society and stratification, education, and gender. Among the populations, women have higher risk of obesity in the Hispanic community. Education and socioeconomic status plays differing roles in the rates of obesity in developed and developing countries. Socioeconomic status affects the resources and support that are available. Urbanization increases the likelihood of adopting diets that are higher in fats and refined …

Crafting An Image: Love, Confidence, And Representation In Leonard Fink’S Photographs Of The Gay Liberation Movement, Alex Del Dago Apr 2021

Crafting An Image: Love, Confidence, And Representation In Leonard Fink’S Photographs Of The Gay Liberation Movement, Alex Del Dago

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Honorable Mention Winner

Leonard Fink (1930-1993) was an American photographer who documented the modern Gay Liberation Movement and inaugural Christopher Street Liberation Day marches that evolved into the Pride Marches we now know of today. This research addresses how Fink used photography as both a form of personal expression and participation in the growing LGBTQ community as well as to document these critical moments in modern queer US history. Prior scholars and research have looked at the Christopher Street Liberation Day marches and the role it had on the LGBTQ movement following the Stonewall Riots, however, little has been done …

Mauna Kea: Where The Cosmos Meet Settler Colonialism, Maria Encinosa Apr 2021

Mauna Kea: Where The Cosmos Meet Settler Colonialism, Maria Encinosa

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

International Research Symposium Exhibitor and Honorable Mention Abstract:

The proposed construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on Mauna Kea has sparked protests given the sacredness of the mountain to the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians). The narratives that have arisen reignite familiar tropes, framing the conflict as one between indigenous religion and scientific progress. I deconstruct these narratives through an analysis of TMT International Observatory (TIO) affiliated websites paired with insights from secondary sources. Ultimately, I argue the TIO’s response and presentation of Ho’Omana Hawai’i religious views and ‘modern’ astronomy as antagonists extend settler-colonialist interests.

Embodied Injustices: Covid-19, Race, And Epigenetics, Maria Encinosa Apr 2021

Embodied Injustices: Covid-19, Race, And Epigenetics, Maria Encinosa

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Digital Projects Showcase Exhibitor Award Although historical and even modern accounts of race assume significant biological differences between racial groups, race has little biological meaning. Nonetheless, the social construct of race has real consequences. Racial identity defines boundaries of community and impacts the experiences of individuals, including how people live and die during a pandemic. COVID-19 has disproportionately affected minority communities in the United States, triggering many explanations for racial disparities in health. Through an analysis of sources spanning from popular media to traditional academic journals, I analyze the potential for epigenetic research to serve as a missing link that …

Music For All? A Comparison Of Florida Middle School Music Enrollment In Traditional, For-Profit, And Nonprofit Charter Schools, Melissa Salek Apr 2021

Music For All? A Comparison Of Florida Middle School Music Enrollment In Traditional, For-Profit, And Nonprofit Charter Schools, Melissa Salek

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Project of Merit Winner

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) lists music as part of a “well-rounded education,” yet several studies have shown that charter school students have less access to music than traditional schools. The purpose of this study is to explore if this trend extends to Florida charter middle school students. Of particular interest is whether the for-profit or nonprofit status of charter management organizations and school characteristics impact music course enrollment. The researcher created a database using publicly available school data and accountability reports for the 2019-20 school year. Results find a significant difference between charter and …

The Uighur Genocide, Karlee Gordon Apr 2021

The Uighur Genocide, Karlee Gordon

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Honorable Mention Winner

International Research Symposium Exhibitor and Project of Merit Award Tensions have surfaced between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and their Muslim ethnic minority, the Uighur, as the CCP attempts to deconstruct their religious identity in exchange for a nationalist allegiance. Militarization of Uighur land, anti-Muslim legislation and detainment of the Uighur into re-education camps reveal the extremes the CCP will take to eliminate the Uighur’s influence. The CCP’s harsh measures bring to question the extent the authoritative regime will allow its population religious freedoms. As Chinese history, recent legislation, and Uighur socialization is analyzed, theories are presented …

Invisible Tolls Of Immigration: Mental Health Among Young Immigrants, Mira Shoukry, Nuria Ibanez Apr 2021

Invisible Tolls Of Immigration: Mental Health Among Young Immigrants, Mira Shoukry, Nuria Ibanez

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

This brief literature review details existing research surrounding the topic of mental health among young immigrants while bringing attention to a widely ignored issue. While those born in the United States are generally aware of the large Hispanic immigrant population in the country, most do not witness the extremely difficult and often traumatic process of immigration. A search of the PubMed database has revealed a severe lack of research into the unique factors affecting the mental health of young immigrants. Despite limited studies, there appears to be a general consensus that immigrant children in particular are at a significantly increased …

Importance Of Technology For Music Students During Covid-19, Alejandro Ledesma, Joseph Hamlet

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Honorable Mention Winner

As the world approached the Summer of 2020, many would-be taken back at the reality of an undermined virus, Covid-19. This virus has single-handedly impacted the entire world including travel, the economy, and education. For many musicians, especially classical musicians, summer is essential for gaining performance, teaching, working, or internship experience specific to one’s career aspirations. Summer music festivals allow students to make tremendous progress on their instruments as they can focus solely on their art. Summer music festivals are also important for making important connections with potential teachers for graduate school study. This is possible through …

Stem Inqueery: How Communion And Femininity Affects Lgbtq Individuals’ Belonging In Stem That Affects Their Motivation To Pursue Stem, Jasmine Elise Graham, Elizabeth R. Brown Apr 2021

Stem Inqueery: How Communion And Femininity Affects Lgbtq Individuals’ Belonging In Stem That Affects Their Motivation To Pursue Stem, Jasmine Elise Graham, Elizabeth R. Brown

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Despite the growth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States, only 60% of STEM majors complete their degrees. Although STEM is stereotyped as a cis (same gender as birth), straight male, agentic (self-focused), and not communal (other-oriented) field, the inclusion of communion in STEM boosts STEM motivation. Since LGBTQ students highly value communion and LGB(T)Q students are less likely than non-LGB(T)Q students to stay in STEM, we explored whether LGBTQ individuals’ desire for communal opportunities or feminine gender expression shapes their belonging or expectations for success in STEM which in turn affects their (future) motivation …
