Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman Dec 1978

Decoration And Pattern As Picture, Nancy Norman

Art & Art History ETDs

Many of the concepts for my imagery are drawn from an attitude of affirming the decorative in art and a personal choice to further explore those possibilities. Ornamentation can enhance art, not because it is superfluous and not because it can embellish life with beauty, but as in the ornamental arts themselves it can magnify qualities already present in material life and work. In this presentation I present my decorative ideas in art from a contemporary perspective in terms of an art historical context a well as through my individual vision represented by paintings, lithographs, and paper pieces. Both sections …

Picto-Relieves Ritmicos: Una Forma De Integrar La Pintura Y La Escultura, Miguel A. Sosa

Art & Art History ETDs

The "picto-reliefs" are a solution for the integration of painting and sculptural elements. This integration is resolved by an abstract format where lines, planes and bands are projected in a constructivist manner. In this paper, an examination is made of the relationships that exist between visual images and "sonorous" images, between visual rhythms and musical relationships, and between color and certain qualities of sound. The bands are a key element in the "picto-reliefs". The bands create a three-dimensional form in the painting, therefore transforming the painting into a relief. The bands also possess ''musical power”, since according to the color …

Clair Engle And The Politics Of California Reclamation, 1943-1960, Stephen Paul Sayles

History ETDs

Clair Engle, the flamboyant Congressman from California's mountain-valley Second Congressional District, played a key role in the great water and power controversies of the 1950's. As Chairman of the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee (1955-1959), he placed his brand on all natural resource development legislation of the period. His interest in water development stemmed from representing a congressional district which contained the source of most of California's water supply. From the 1940's to the 1960's Engle authored every major addition to the great Central Valley Project of California, including such projects as the American River Development, Trinity River project, …

Collingwood's Idea Of Re-Enactment: The Possibility Of A Differentiation Between History And Philosophy, Glenn William Malone May 1978

Collingwood's Idea Of Re-Enactment: The Possibility Of A Differentiation Between History And Philosophy, Glenn William Malone

Philosophy ETDs

The "Prologue" to Speculum Mentis introduces a present disorder experienced by many Europeans in the life of culture. It formulates the problem and leaves the solution to the very special characters involved in the drama. These special characters are depicted as five definite forms of human experience. Each is essential to the problem; each contributes to the solution. In short, the coming to terms with the problem lies within each of them. The solution does not arise outside their action. The drama ends exhibiting a new "principle of unity." Philosophy, the self-conscious form of experience, solves the present anarchy experienced …

Towards The Completion Of An Illusion, Joan Emaime Martin

Art & Art History ETDs

I have made an investigation of Renaissance perspective in pursuit of an illusion of objects in space. Mother Knows Best, Robert Saxby

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is a personal and brief chronicle of my artistic development. It attempts to put my art, and my attitudes toward art into a biographical framework. The English educational system, my emigration to the United States, and my three years at the University of New Mexico are examined, and the effects of each of these experiences on my work are noted. The thesis also deals, quite specifically, with my art work. What I have created, even how I have created it, is briefly discussed. I also scan the primary ideas and influences on my work. I conclude with a …

Delphi Survey Of Organizational Futurists On Issues And Trends Affecting Organizational Appearance In 2000, Suzann M. Owings

American Studies ETDs

Studying the future is a relatively recent academic phenomenon. Recognized as a distinct scholarly activity in the late 1960's, futures research has gained increasing popularity during the last 10 years. Concerned with information collection and policy formulation, the futures field describes alternative futures, provides an early warning system for signs of change, identifies possible and probable consequences to various choices and developments, determines the degree of knowledge or uncertainty existing about futures possibilities, and develops various policy options (Hahn and Little, 1976). Using the futures research methodology, increasingly futures researchers are joining specialists in other fields to study the futures …

Of Elements, Memories, And Dreams, Margaret Emily Newman Apr 1978

Of Elements, Memories, And Dreams, Margaret Emily Newman

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis is an exploration of the relationship between my paintings and various memories, reflections, and experiences. Because there is an elusiveness to the memories of experience which over time confuses dreams and reality, I describe these events in prose poem forms, which seems better suited to the nature of these reflections.

Marx's Category Of Praxis, Lawrence Kennedy Schmidt Apr 1978

Marx's Category Of Praxis, Lawrence Kennedy Schmidt

Philosophy ETDs

This thesis is an exploration of the category of praxis in Marx’s philosophy. By means of this it is suggested that the category of praxis is the central category of Marx's philosophy and that it provides a means by which the development and unity of Marx’s work may be analyzed. The method of exposition is to discuss the definition and subdivisions of this category as found in Marx’s work. In the first chapter it is demonstrated that the category of praxis results from Marx's synthesis of Hegel's idealism and French materialism. Praxis is defined as sensuous human activity. In the …

The Camera: Its Literary Context, Dana Asbury

Art & Art History ETDs

A discussion is undertaken of modern ideas on the nature of appearance and reality, and how these ideas relate to photography, especially portraiture.

An examination is made of some portrait photographers (August Sander, Richard Avedon, Arnold Newman, Diane Arbus) to trace the evolution of my own approach, which is further related to some movements in art history (Romanticism, Surrealism) and to twentieth century literature (Virginia Woolf).

The first section deals with work done from 1971 to 1976. The second section deals with work done since arriving at the University of New Mexico in the fall of 1976.

Indian Revolts In Northern New Spain, 1680-1786, A Comparative Analysis, Roberto Mario Salmón Apr 1978

Indian Revolts In Northern New Spain, 1680-1786, A Comparative Analysis, Roberto Mario Salmón

History ETDs

Much of Spain's colonial history in the Americas can be told in terms of the relations between Spaniards and Indians. The New World Indians figured as significantly in determining the nature and direction of Spanish exploration and settlement as did political and geographical factors. Spaniards were ever desirous to learn more about these Indian peoples, especially if they had cultures and economies worth exploiting. But the Indians seldom submitted peacefully to strange men who spoke of God and king and insisted on a new way of life. Indian chieftains only reluctantly gave up positions of tribal control and remained prepared …

The Creation Of Abstract Forms In Metal, Lynn Ellen Peters

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to explain the creation and the reasoning behind a group of jewelry pieces which was begun in August, 1974. The following discussion of my work covers a range of topics related to my jewelry and how they reflect my philosophical outlook. In my efforts to create abstract forms derived from nature, I work with two mental processes which deal with my intuitions and intellect and they help me to make use of my creative abilities. Much can happen from these processes, and I hope to justify my jewelry making not only on these terms, …

Predicting The Unpredictable, Elizabeth A. Kay Apr 1978

Predicting The Unpredictable, Elizabeth A. Kay

Art & Art History ETDs

My work is an attempt to create a visual metaphor for my personal attitude towards life which stems not only from intuition, but also from my continued interest in literature, history, and philosophy. I have tried to clarify my intuitive feelings by drawing upon other points of view which seem to resemble my own and to question personal opinions when others seem more reasonable. Consequently, my work is the visual product of a great deal of mental speculation and the imagery often has a close relationship with the thinking that inspires it.

I Want To Say Something About All That Noise, Stacy Louise Mann Apr 1978

I Want To Say Something About All That Noise, Stacy Louise Mann

Art & Art History ETDs

When I paint, I often feel as though I am casting characters for an episode. The characters come from the world around me. They are arranged diagrammatically or physically with other images. The characters are talking their places for a ritual. Through rituals we can transcend our surroundings or pass through gates and extend our aesthetic limits. It is fantasy.

Piers The Plowman And The Building Of Truth, Rose Cothren Anstine Mar 1978

Piers The Plowman And The Building Of Truth, Rose Cothren Anstine

English Language and Literature ETDs

Although some of the problems that Piers the Plowman presents for the twentieth-century reader--authorship, thought, and theology--have been elucidated, the structure of William Langland's fourteenth-century poem still puzzles modern readers and critics. The continuing concern with the structure of Piers the Plowman is evidenced by the works of T. P. Dunning, D. W. Robertson and B. F. Huppe, and Mary Carruthers which have appeared over a period of about forty years. Each of these works is concerned with structure; each uses the works of Augustine as a theoretical basis, but none of the works treats structure as separate from thought. …

A Philosophical Analysis Of Grimms' Marchen, James C. Moss Feb 1978

A Philosophical Analysis Of Grimms' Marchen, James C. Moss

Philosophy ETDs

Grimms' Marchen are not only a delight to encounter, but they contain material of substantial philosophical value. This is a philosophical analysis of Grimms' tales, intended to introduce folklore to the realm of philosophy. Two major areas are investigated. They are the value of Marchen to a theory of knowledge and the existential value of these tales in influencing living, thinking, and acting. The major areas analyzed are the epistemology or world view, horror, humor, and ethics of these tales. The epistemology section discusses the hybrid nature of these Marchen as a synthesis of mythic consciousness and scientific or discursive …

The Cliché-Verre In The Nineteenth Century, Elizabeth J. Glassman Jan 1978

The Cliché-Verre In The Nineteenth Century, Elizabeth J. Glassman

Art & Art History ETDs

The cliché-verre process is a photographic technique; an image is made on a glass plate which is then employed as a negative for contact printing on a light-sensitive sheet of paper. The cliché-verre method for creating prints was developed in the mid-nineteenth century, a period of intense technical experimentation in photography and of revived interest in the graphic process of etching. As the cliché-verre incorporates elements of both printmaking (a drawn matrix through a prepared ground) and photography (the presence of a photographic negative), the technique has occupied a middle ground between the two arts. The process has been explored …

El Impulso Dramatico En La Poesia De Miguel Hernandez, Reynaldo Ruiz

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Miguel Hernandez lived through Spain's most turbulent and violent years -the Civil War 1936-1939. The factors that contributed to Hernandez' view of the world were his individualism, political convictions, and experiences with the war. This view is transmitted through an energetic poetic voice. Such expression is considered by many as traditional poetry which is highly political; nevertheless, in his poetic world there is a unique mode of expression.

The purpose of this study is to examine Hernandez' forceful poetry which appears very dramatic in nature. It is the intent of this study to analyze and indicate the outstanding characteristics that …

Strategies For Change: Action Plan Workbook, Lila Aurich Jan 1978

Strategies For Change: Action Plan Workbook, Lila Aurich

Books

When we take action to produce change, frequently we tend to move immediately from a superficial identification of the problem to action. Experience indicates that a more thorough diagnosis of all aspects of the situation to be changed, and of our relationship to the situation as agents of change, will produce a more effective result.

This Workbook is a companion to the Program Guide and What Is a System? It is designed to help you put theory into practice when analyzing and laying out an action plan.
