Review Of German Poetry: An Anthology From Klopstock To Enzensberger. Edited By Martin Swales, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Oct 1988

Review Of German Poetry: An Anthology From Klopstock To Enzensberger. Edited By Martin Swales, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Noted Germanist Martin Swales offers a volume designed to introduce English speakers to German lyric poetry from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. Seventeen poets are included, each represented with several poems (between six and eight is the norm, with Goethe at the high end with eighteen, and Novalis at the low, with two). The poems are in German only; Swales' intrduction and notes (an intrductory paragraph on each author and brief synopses of each poem along with some formal observations) are in English. Swales' historical schema lends this book of poetry a degree of thematic coherence unusual for a …

Review Of Uwe Johnsons Frühwerk: Im Spiegel Der Deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik By Nicolai Riedel, Robert K. Shirer Oct 1988

Review Of Uwe Johnsons Frühwerk: Im Spiegel Der Deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik By Nicolai Riedel, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Nicolai Riedel has once more performed a valuable service for Uwe Johnson scholars. With this volume he provides a documentary complement to his excellent bibliographies and his useful analyses of Johnson reception. Riedel has collected seventy short newspaper and magazine pieces about Johnson's early work, many of which have been hitherto virtually inaccessible. There are six general features, twenty-two reviews of Mutmassungen über Jakob, twenty-two reviews of Das dritte Buch über Achim, and twenty reviews of the posthumously published first novel Ingrid Babendererde.

Review Of Christa Wolf "Nachdenken Über Christa T." By Wolfram And Helmtrud Mauser, Robert K. Shirer Oct 1988

Review Of Christa Wolf "Nachdenken Über Christa T." By Wolfram And Helmtrud Mauser, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Nachdenken über Christa T. is one of the most widely discussed novels in GDR literature, and a reviewer therefore approaches a new book-length interpretation with some trepidation. However, Wolfram and Helmtrud Mauser's study is fresh, insightful, and clearly written. The volume simultaneously does justice to a very difficult text and situates it intelligently in the context of GDR literature of the 1960s and 1970s. While their interpretation is not exhaustive, the authors demonstrate familiarity with the large body of Wolf literature, and their notes point the reader to other interpretative approaches.

New Drawings By Erhard Schön And His Circle, Alison G. Stewart Oct 1988

New Drawings By Erhard Schön And His Circle, Alison G. Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Erhard Schön was the most prolific draughtsman in Nuremberg after Sebald Beham during the second quarter of the sixteenth century, between the end of Dürer's activity and the beginning of Virgil Solis' and Jost Amman's. A pupil of Dürer renowned for his prodigious woodcut production -- some 1,200 book illustrations and 500 single sheets -- Schön also executed at least thirty-eight drawings. These works, never published as a group, are mostly presentation drawings in pen and ink housed at Berlin, Cologne, and Erlangen. They date primarily to the 1530s and early 1540s and have been linked chiefly to Schön's prints. …

Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1988

Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Over the past twenty-five years, as readings of Flaubert's texts have become increasingly concerned with the definition of various narrative structures, the study of point of view has been inextricably tied to determining how his narratives generate (or, to some minds, subvert) meaning. Thus it is that almost all hermeneutical approaches have been concerned with point of view in one way or another, the procedure usually being to establish the principal or authoritative narrational axis (or perhaps a pseudo-authoritative one) and then to plot and analyze the departures from it. Point of view is not a new concern, of course, …

Intellect And Will In Augustine's Confessions, Dan D. Crawford Sep 1988

Intellect And Will In Augustine's Confessions, Dan D. Crawford

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Augustine tells us in the Confessions that his reading of Cicero's Hortensius at the age of nineteen aroused in him a burning 'passion for the wisdom of eternal truth'. He was inspired 'to love wisdom itself, whatever it might be, and to search for it, pursue it, hold it, and embrace it firmly'. And thus he embarked on his arduous journey to the truth, which was at the same time a conversion to Catholic Christianity, and which culminated twelve years later in his experience in the garden in Milan.

In the first part of this paper I will trace Augustine's …

Entrepreneurs And Private Enterprise: The Development Of Medical Lecturing In London, 1775–1820, Susan C. Lawrence Jun 1988

Entrepreneurs And Private Enterprise: The Development Of Medical Lecturing In London, 1775–1820, Susan C. Lawrence

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Beginning in the 1730s and 1740s, "market forces" tempered by professional and institutional constraints shaped the growth and organization of medical teaching in London. Gradually, after 1815, the growing protectionism of the licensing corporations undercut the private entrepreneur and, by the middle of the nineteenth century, led to the ascendancy of organized medical schools and university-granted medical degrees.

Recent work on eighteenth-century medicine has begun to focus attention on London as a dynamic center for both practical clinical experience and formal lecturing. Such current research has, however, primarily concentrated on a few significant individuals, especially William and John Hunter and …

Heinz Hilpert: The Revitalization Of German Theatre After World War Ii, William Grange May 1988

Heinz Hilpert: The Revitalization Of German Theatre After World War Ii, William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

When Heinz Hilpert died in Gottingen on 25 November 1967 at the age of seventy-seven, obituary notices throughout the German-speaking world hailed him as the last of the great theatre directors, a group that had included Otto Brahm, Max Reinhardt, Leopold Jessner, Jurgen Fehling, Erich Engel, and Gustaf Griindgens. As early as 1931, numerous critics considered him perhaps the best director in Berlin, second only to Reinhardt himself. Hilpert had indeed succeeded Reinhardt as Intendant of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1933; when he did so he pledged himself to the task of preserving the Deutsches Theater as an …

Subtilitas In The Tonal Language Of Fumeux Fume, Peter M. Lefferts May 1988

Subtilitas In The Tonal Language Of Fumeux Fume, Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

The late 14th-century French repertory contains music characterized by an ingenuity and great subtlety whose terms of reference are entirely derived from within the art itself. One of the best-known French chansons of the period, the rondeau Fumeux fume by Solage, contains a superabundance of artifice, a wide variety of clever and audacious musical techniques. But in contrast to the extravagances of notation and rhythmic language that are the familiar hallmarks of the ars subtilior in music, the most striking feature of Fumeux fume is the proliferation of accidentals, and the bizarre tonal behavior they indicate. In addition to F, …

Review Of Eric L. Santner, Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance And The Poetic Imagination., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1988

Review Of Eric L. Santner, Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance And The Poetic Imagination., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Eric Santner's study, "intended both as a 'revisionist' reading of Hölderlin's later poetry and an introduction to a larger study of issues concerning narrative theory," interprets formal aspects of the later poems—what has traditionally been called their harte Fügung—in terms of narrative parataxis, i.e. a breakdown in the Idealist "narrative of redemption." Santner begins with a theoretical discussion of narrative drawn chiefly from Hayden White and Roland Barthes (especially from Camera Lucida). Opposing "narrative vigilance," that potentially pathological compulsion to comprehend particulars within a hypotactic, overarching narrative structure, is a strategy of parataxis whereby narrative vigilance is released …

Joseph Drilling, Alison Stewart Mar 1988

Joseph Drilling, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

The popularity of Joseph as carpenter-provider for Mary and Jesus was discussed by Cynthia Hahn last year (LXVIII1,9 86, 54- 66) in relation to Campin's Merode Triptych and other examples of 15th-century art and literature. In Campin's painting, Joseph is represented in the right wing seated amid an array of carpenter's tools, pieces of wood, and handmade wooden objects. The oft discussed winepress strainer, or firescreen (the latter suggested by Hahn), which Joseph drills, appears to have a visual correlative in an unpublished anonymous 15th-century Flemish panel painting in the Museo Correr, Venice (Figs. 1, 2).

There, on the verso …

Flaubert's Dis/En Closures, Marshall C. Olds Jan 1988

Flaubert's Dis/En Closures, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

The topos of the window and analogous framing devices is one of the recurrent characteristics of Flaubert's work, and, as examples of this discretionary practice, one need recall only some of the many scenes that are framed by windows: the view of Yonville through the carriage window or the stainedglass window that is, very nearly, La Légende de Saint Julien l'hospitalier. But windows are only incidentally our concern, for as the views of Yvetot and Constantinople equally signify something beyond themselves, so does this topos tie into a larger question, which is the evolution of Flaubert's practice of closure.

The …

Orientation And Symmetry: The Structuring Of Pattern Repeats In The Paracas Necropolis Embroideries, Mary Frame Jan 1988

Orientation And Symmetry: The Structuring Of Pattern Repeats In The Paracas Necropolis Embroideries, Mary Frame

Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings

The most extensive Peruvian fabric remains come from the archeological site of Paracas Necropolis on the South Coast of Peru. Preserved by the dry desert conditions, this cache of 429 mummy bundles, excavated in 1926-27, provides an unparalleled opportunity for comparing the range and nature of variations in similar fabrics which are securely related in time and space. The bundles are thought to span the time period from 500-200 B.C.

The most numerous and notable fabrics are embroideries: garments that have been classified as mantles, tunics, wraparound skirts, loincloths, turbans and ponchos. In general, a single figure is repeated in …

Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin Jan 1988

Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin

Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings

We all associate meaning with textile designs. If we can see the principles of Revolutionary zeal and the sanction of family life and work in one textile design, we can perceive the explicit Modernism of another and realize that in the complex decisions that comprise the creation of a textile, we have fashioned our world and its values. Perhaps the textile is small, but its condensed values and meaning may be a more clarified perception about the world than most others. For many, such as Roland Barthes, textiles and clothing can thereby be described as a sign system offering a …

Cognitive Textiles Cloths: The Indigenous Classification Of Batak, Sandra A. Niessen

Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings

INTRODUCTION

Since completing a doctorate in anthropology on textiles produced by the Batak of North Sumatra (Niessen 1985), I have been supported by various post-doctoral scholarships (1) to produce an inventory of these same textiles. I am pleased to have this rare opportunity to tell you, a learned society of textile scholars, how I have gone about this task, my motives, goals, and methodology. I particularly would welcome feedback from you on what I see to be the theoretical underpinnings and implications of the project.

The inception of this project dates from a day in 1980 when I visited one …
