Documenting The Genesis Of The International Horn Society, Zachary Cooper

The primary objective of this project was to enhance the historical, educational, and pedagogical records regarding the inauguration of the International Horn Society (IHS) by creating new audio documents with 97-year-old founder William “Bill” C. Robinson. The applicant would conduct a week of interviews with IHS founder Robinson (born 1919) to create an audio document of his personal insights and recollections regarding Robinson’s important contributions to the founding of the IHS. This project would commemorate and honor Robinson’s legacy to the international horn community, create a greater biographical footprint of his life, and enhance the international pedagogical archive.

My musical tour of Sweden (May, 2016) with jazz guitarist Steve Kovalcheck was a success both artistically and educationally. The tour was promoted by Radio Nostalgi who featured a 45-minute interview with myself and Royne Nilsson (the station’s jazz expert). Topics covered ranged from differences between the systems of higher education in Sweden and the United States, the School of Music at UM, the current direction of jazz music, my influences and background. I have spent the year since May 2014 visiting the major archival collections with holdings relating to the experiences of American Indians and other indigenous peoples with the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. With UGP funding I spent approximately three weeks in Cambridge and six weeks in Chicago, traveling to each place once during fall semester and once during spring semester.

The ORSP grant is able to cover the entirety of costs associated with the recording, mixing, digital and mechanical rights, and release of an album with Duo Nyans (Dr. Christopher Kirkpatrick, clarinet, and Dr. Johan Eriksson, saxophone). The focus of the album is new music for clarinet and saxophone, with a historical range of repertoire from 1993 to 2014.
