"Beowulf": Interpretation And Supplementation, Abigail Martin May 2023

"Beowulf": Interpretation And Supplementation, Abigail Martin

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the various ways in which Beowulf has been interpreted across time, explaining how factors, called paratexts, have played a large part in shaping these interpretations and how, especially in reading the Beowulf manuscript, we inherit the sum of these influences. In order to demonstrate this, I present a variety of arguments and perspectives on the text that have been developed by scholars over the years based on different types of paratexts (physical, intangible, and translational) in the absence of a known author. At each stage of Beowulf’s life, there have been opportunities for individuals with authority …

The Historicity Of Theodosius’S Rescript On The Communion Of Damasus And Meletius: Revisiting The Codex Veronensis Lx (58), Lester L. Field Jr. Jul 2022

The Historicity Of Theodosius’S Rescript On The Communion Of Damasus And Meletius: Revisiting The Codex Veronensis Lx (58), Lester L. Field Jr.

Faculty and Student Open Access Publications

The late eighth-century Codex Veronensis LX (58) uniquely transmits the Exemplum synodi habitae Romae episcoporum XCIII ex rescripto imperiali. Recent historiography has neglected the manuscript and reduced the Exemplum synodi to the realm of textual curiosity or fabrication, as supposed redactors— supposedly without synodal, imperial, or archival authorization—melded proceedings of Roman and Antiochene synods that met between 371 and 379 into a unified whole. Yet, this document remains crucial to understanding Western- Nicene acceptance of Meletius as bishop of Antioch and his communion as orthodox. Through internal and external investigation using techniques of material philology, the present study seeks …

A Righteousness Housed In The Body: The Conception And Division Of Kings' Bodies In Early Medieval Northwestern Literature, Sharon Miller Wofford Jan 2018

A Righteousness Housed In The Body: The Conception And Division Of Kings' Bodies In Early Medieval Northwestern Literature, Sharon Miller Wofford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how the bodies of kings in medieval Irish, Anglo-Saxon, and Norse literature demonstrate sacral kingship, a theory which links the prosperity of a people to the strength of the king’s relationship with the divine. I argue that the practice of collecting the heads of English kings as relics, particularly the Northumbrian warrior-kings Edwin and Oswald, is due to an understanding of the king's bodies as a source of power and "luck." I put the dispersal of the heads of Kings Edwin and Oswald in conversation with the work of Andrew Reynolds on deviant burial customs in Anglo-Saxon …

She Is Right To Behave Thus: Implications Of Illicit Rendezvous In Medieval Narrative, Catherine Albers Jan 2018

She Is Right To Behave Thus: Implications Of Illicit Rendezvous In Medieval Narrative, Catherine Albers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While preconceptions of the Middle Ages often rely on assumptions about Christianity and the kind of society that the Catholic Church promoted, the reality is that the historical and literary medieval world is much more complicated. When discussing the issues of sexuality, women, and sexual normativity, these assumptions hinder our ability to accurately analyze the content and reception of medieval literature. This project addresses this gap by positioning itself among the criticism set forth by scholars of four different cultures (Irish, Norse, English, and Italian) to examine the connections between the reception of women who act outside of the boundaries …

The Reinvented Romance: A Study Of Manuscript Bnf French 60, Natalie Keller Jan 2017

The Reinvented Romance: A Study Of Manuscript Bnf French 60, Natalie Keller

Honors Theses

This thesis examines a fourteenth century manuscript of the Roman d'Enéas, currently held at the Bibliothèque nationale in France, for significant textual changes against the other surviving manuscripts. Careful study of the manuscript exposed considerable modifications to characterization and genre. Examination of the textual changes present in the manuscript, BnF 60, revealed an amplification of female figures and subtle developments of romance elements. In BnF 60 most changes occur in the exposition and the revised ending. The writer of this version appears to draw from copies of both the Roman d'Enéas and Virgil's Aeneid. It demonstrates the inconsistencies present in …

A Neural Network Approach To Handwriting Recognition In The Codex A, Eleanor C. Anthony Jan 2016

A Neural Network Approach To Handwriting Recognition In The Codex A, Eleanor C. Anthony

Honors Theses

In this research, an attempt to create a neural network classifier for the Latin uncial alphabet found in the Codex A, a late fourth century manuscript held by the Archivo Capitolare in Vercelli, Italy and the oldest of the Latin Gospels, is outlined. Training data collection methods, as well as image processing and artificial data creation methods used for expanding the training set, are discussed, as is their contribution to the success of the neural networks. While successful results are achieved for the testing sets, classification of new image data is largely unsuccessful. Potential improvement and avenues for expanding the …

The Beowulf Poet's Accommodation Of Pre-Christian Germanic Culture, Walter Beverly Jan 2014

The Beowulf Poet's Accommodation Of Pre-Christian Germanic Culture, Walter Beverly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues for the Beowulf poet's more accommodating perspective on pre-Christian Germanic culture, when examined in comparison to other, later Germanic authors of works such as Icelandic sagas and Danish pseudo-history. The primary components of Beowulf I address to argue for this point are the poet's incorporation of pagan Germanic cosmology, and his rendering of Beowulf according to two different heroic types in Germanic literature, those being the model thane and the model king.

Staging Sodomy: Deviance And Devotion On The Early English Stage, Bobby Ellis Pelts Jan 2012

Staging Sodomy: Deviance And Devotion On The Early English Stage, Bobby Ellis Pelts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an examination of the multivalent category of sodomy in late medieval works of and about biblical drama: A Tretise of Miraclis Pleyinge, the York Joseph's Trouble About Mary and the N-Town Passion plays. Because the Tretise of Miraclis Pleyinge invokes charges of sodomy in its attack on biblical drama, this work argues that the medieval stage is particularly hospitable to exploring the queer moments of Christian theology. Focusing on the sodomitic relationships of Christ's life as they are revealed in York's Joseph's Trouble and the N-Town Passion sequences, this thesis argues that these plays problematize Christ's legendary …

Encountering The Marvelous In Marie De France, Robert Edward Mccain Jan 2012

Encountering The Marvelous In Marie De France, Robert Edward Mccain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is an examination of the marvelous encounter in the Lais of Marie de France, a collection of twelve short narratives attributed to the twelfth century. Four of the lais – Guigemar, Bisclavret, Lanval, and Yonec - were selected for close analysis of the marvelous motifs and themes that are central to each story. Beginning with a summary of some of the proposed sources of the lais, many of which are Celtic in origin, the analysis subsequently examines the language of the text that describes the encounters between the feudal and "Other" world. In particular, the words poür, pensis, …

Serializing The Middle Ages: Television And The (Re)Production Of Pop Culture Medievalisms, Sara Mcclendon Knight Jan 2012

Serializing The Middle Ages: Television And The (Re)Production Of Pop Culture Medievalisms, Sara Mcclendon Knight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In his now canonical "Dreaming the Middle Ages," Umberto Eco famously quips that "it seems that people like the Middle Ages" (61). Eco's apt sentiment still strikes a resonant chord some twenty years after its publication; there is indeed something about the Middle Ages that continues to fascinate our postmodern society. One of the most tangible ways this interest manifests itself is through our media. This project explores some of the ways that representations of the medieval past function within present-day reimaginings in the media. More specifically, television's obvious visual textuality, widespread popularity, and virtually untapped scholarly potential offer an …
