Peering into the tomes of history in an attempt to better comprehend the American mind during this critical period of our history, the author has encountered many conflicting and ambiguous statements. But by comparing these opinions and by a detailed study of original sources the author has endeavored to reach logical grounds for his reasoning. The opinions here offered agree with those of others used, but only because the author through diligent study has arrived at like conclusions. That his own historical integrity has not been jeopardized by his faith in others is the author's sincere hope.

This study traces the growth and development of The King's Daughters Home for Incurables, Louisville, Kentucky, from its beginning up until the end of 1948 and looks forward to future plans that may seem appropriate. Members of the Board of Directors desired such a study be made as a means of drawing together the past work of their organization. They also looked to the study as being a help in making future plans for the continuation of their work.

During the last half of the nineteenth century, novels, short stories, articles and poems written by John William De Forest appeared in the pages of such popular magazines as Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Galaxy, along with literary contributions from Mark Twain, Whittier, Longfellow.
