My Friend's Execution, William Vance Trollinger Nov 1998

My Friend's Execution, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

Just after midnight on Wednesday September 24, 1997, I watched as the state of Missouri put Samuel McDonald to death by lethal injection. I had never wanted to witness an execution, and I was devastated by what I saw. How did I come to be at the Potosi Correctional Institute on that night?

It had to do with friendship, and with the unforeseen and frightening implications of taking even the smallest step forward in faith.

Since my late teens I have opposed the death penalty. I have had many reasons: Poor and minority defendants are executed in grossly disproportionate numbers. …

Using Pre-Instruction Questionnaires To Improve The Small Group Writing Class, Bryan Bardine

English Faculty Publications

A pre-instruction questionnaire was used with two small group writing classes at Goodwill Industries of the Miami Valley, Inc. (Ohio). The questionnaire was designed to provide as much information as possible about the students' knowledge and background in writing. The survey had four purposes: determine what kinds of writing students currently did or had done in the past, identify what types of writing interested the students, get each student's view of his/her writing, and determine whether students had thought about what personal goals they wanted to achieve by completing the course. Five categories of questions were included. The first set …

"Awkward" "Nice" "Word choice" "Weak" "Vague"

As adult educators and teachers of writing, most of us have been guilty of writing some, if not all, of these comments on our students' papers. It is important that we understand the effect that our written comments can have on our students' work, and the role that we play in their writing development as the reader of their texts. We need to acknowledge that not all comments we write, regardless of the intent, help our students.

By knowing this we can respond to our students' written work in ways that will enable them …

The Tear That Does Not Mend: A Review Of 'Freedom, Trauma, Continuities: Northern India And Independence', Haimanti Roy

History Faculty Publications

Academic attention on Indian Independence and Partition has hitherto been focused mainly on the political and the "sheer teleology to the climax in August 1947 when British power was formally transferred." Freedom, Trauma, Continuities: Northern India and Independence, in the view of its editors as well as its contributors, is an attempt to examine other developments, no less momentous, during this period. The book, which is a collection of 12 essays by different authors dealing with various aspects of the Partition of 1947, attempts, as the title suggests, to document the "trauma" and find the "continuities" following "freedom."

Annotated Bibliography Of Writing Resources, Bryan Bardine

English Faculty Publications

This bibliography contains books, articles, and Internet addresses that would be helpful for teachers looking for new strategies or theories about the teaching of writing. Along with each bibliographic entry is a very brief summary or explanation of the work. Many of these works were not geared specifically for adult education teachers of writing; however, most of the points in them are easily transferred to the adult education classroom. Bibliographic entries with an asterisk next to the author's name are available for loan from the OLRC library. Those works not having an asterisk should be easily available at most libraries. …
