In this article, I show how Juan Gabriel Vásquez’s novel El ruido de las cosas al caer (The Sound of Things Falling, 2011) proposes an articulation of the works of memory and affects that can be ethically relevant within the context of the war on drugs in Colombia. I link this analysis with an interpretation of the novel that discusses the role of literature in debates about systemic violence in the global war on drugs. Since 2006, the initiation of Mexico’s “War on Drugs,” the nation has experienced horrific violence despite increased militarization of its streets. As cartels have deepened their networks, controlling the northern border states and beyond, (random) acts of violence have become an endemic crisis. En este ensayo se lleva a cabo un análisis de la violencia en tres obras del ciclo Los papeles del infierno de Enrique Buenaventura. Con ese propósito se aplican las categorías de violencia propuestas por S. Žižek y los análisis sobre la violencia en el teatro latinoamericano de ese periodo llevados a cabo por Severino Albuquerque (1991) y Diana Taylor (1991). This article is a synthesis of the scholarly literature on the post-process approach to teaching second language (L2) writing, particularly college and university composition in English as an additional language. This synthesis aims to offer a definition of post-process L2 writing that can readily lend itself to practice and be more accessible to practitioners. “Introduction,” “body,” and “conclusion” are the most accessible words in the instructional lexicon for ESL writing teachers when they want to describe the structure of a typical five-paragraph persuasive or argumentative essay or its shorter variations for standardized tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. They are frequently employed to refer to the three tiers of the hamburger essay in textbooks, on classroom boards, and in YouTube tutorials.

‘Because When Governments Speak, They Are Not Always Right’: National Construction And Orthographic Conflicts In Mid-Nineteenth Century Spain, Laura Villa

This paper analyzes the polemics surrounding the discursive legitimation and political institutionalization of different spelling systems circulating in mid-nineteenth-century Spain. In 1843, teachers associated with Madrid's Literary and Scientific Academy of Primary Education developed a simplified orthography and began to implement it in schools. In response to this independent initiative, Queen Isabel II signed a Royal Decree in 1844 that mandated the exclusive use of Royal Spanish Academy's orthography in Spain's primary education. The Literary and Scientific Academy contested the imposition and took actions to oppose its implementation, by organizing meetings and publishing essays to defend both the simplified orthography …

This study analyzes the spelling reform initiative defended by Mariano Cubí y Soler during the second quarter of the nineteenth century. This renowned Catalan phrenologist composed various writings addressing the need to simplify the Spanish alphabet in order to achieve a complete correspondence between phonemes and graphemes. The development of Cubí’s orthographic theory and model is examined in these pages through a description of several proposals appeared in Gramática de la lengua castellana (1824), Revista Bimestre Cubana (1831), Sistema completo de frenolojía (1843, 1844, 1846) and La Antorcha (1849). La Disputada Autoridad De Las Academias: Debate Lingüístico-Ideológico En Torno A La Ortografía De 2010, José Del Valle, Laura Villa

In this article we analyze the language ideological debate that surrounded the publication of the new edition of the Ortografía of the Royal Spanish Academy, published in 2010. We examine this debate with the concept of "higiene verbal" and focusing on the current language policies to maintain the control of the symbolic status of the language. The analysis reveals some tensions that have been usually concealed in Spain's linguistic historiography in favor of an aseptic narrative of a cordial management of the language and its norms by all the academies of the language.
