Transdiagnostic Symptom Clusters Among Idiopathic Pain And Fatigue Disorders, Chloe Lisette Jones Jan 2023

Transdiagnostic Symptom Clusters Among Idiopathic Pain And Fatigue Disorders, Chloe Lisette Jones

All ETDs from UAB

Background: There are no established etiologies, biomarkers, or approved treatments for myalgicencephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). It is thought that the ME/CFS criteria may be diagnosing individuals within a spectrum of different disease states, or even different diseases. There likely exist shared mechanisms across idiopathic pain and fatigue disorders, and diverse mechanisms underneath each individual diagnosis. The need to compare ME/CFS to similar, overlapping, and distinct disorders is a critical element in progressing our understanding of idiopathic pain and fatigue. Methods: A total of 2,731 comprehensive medical history and symptom reports were collected from respondents across the globe with a variety …

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Pain Severity And Functioning In A Pediatric Rheumatic Pain Population, Tolulope Adetayo Jan 2023

The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Pain Severity And Functioning In A Pediatric Rheumatic Pain Population, Tolulope Adetayo

All ETDs from UAB

Background: Low socioeconomic status (SES) may exacerbate pain and impede functioning in children with chronic widespread pain. SES can be categorized as objective or subjective and assessed at individual, family, and neighborhood levels. However, most studies do not assess SES this comprehensively, thus, the true impact of SES on child health is likely unknown. The proposed study examined the unique and interactive effects of different measures of SES on pain severity and functioning in children with rheumatic conditions including juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), juvenile primary fibromyalgia syndrome (JPFS), and non-specific musculoskeletal pain (NSMP). Methods: 88 children (32 JIA, 31 JPFS, …

Low-Dose Dextromethorphan For The Treatment Of Pain In Fibromyalgia: A Single-Blind Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial, Stephanie Christina Mueller Jan 2022

Low-Dose Dextromethorphan For The Treatment Of Pain In Fibromyalgia: A Single-Blind Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial, Stephanie Christina Mueller

All ETDs from UAB

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating chronic pain condition. Its pathophysiology is largely unknown, which has hindered the development of effective treatments. Central sensitization and neuroinflammation have been forwarded as models of FM pathophysiology, both of which indicate the antitussive drug dextromethorphan (DXM) as a potentially effective treatment. DXM is an N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-receptor antagonist and microglial modulator with anti-neuroinflammatory properties at low doses. It is currently available for clinical use, but has not been tested as a treatment for FM at low dosages. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of DXM in treating FM-associated symptoms of pain, fatigue, cognitive problems, …

Meta-Analysis Of Cognitive Performance In Fibromyalgia, Tyler Reed Bell Jan 2016

Meta-Analysis Of Cognitive Performance In Fibromyalgia, Tyler Reed Bell

All ETDs from UAB

Fibromyalgia is a disease that encompasses difficulties with pain, physical function, and emotion, but is also characterized by complaints of poor cognition. Over the last two decades, a vast amount of literature has tested for cognitive differences between individuals with and without fibromyalgia. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a quantitative synthesis on these differences across multiple cognitive domains. After a systematic search of eligible studies, random-effect meta-analyses were conducted on effect sizes (Hedges’ g) derived from 37 cross-sectional studies covering domains of processing speed, memory and executive function. Participants included persons with fibromyalgia (total n = …
