This article traces the history of a horse, known as Gen. Knox, that became a foundation sire of several other Maine trotting horses. The horse was brought to Maine in 1859 at the age of three by Thomas S. Lang of North Vassalboro. Gen. Knox was included in the 1874 edition of Noted Maine Horses. In a letter summarizing the 1874 trotting season written to The Maine Farmer, George H. Bailey noted that Maine had 40 organized tracks in operation. Horses of the caliber of Gen. Knox, along with significant enthusiasm for the sport, contributed to Maine's stellar reputation …

Four thousand years ago, Archaic period peoples hunted swordfish in the Gulf of Maine. In addition to fauna remains, archaeologists have recovered stone representations of the distinctive sword-shaped bill, suggesting that these animals had a cultural significance that went beyond their dietary value. What archaeologists don't know is precisely where and how the fish were taken. In our own time, swordfish rarely come inshore. Commercial operators, both harpooners and long-liners, fish the eastern side of Brown's and George's Banks and points farther along the continental shelf. Even if hunters of the Archaic period could travel that distance, it would have …

One would think that after winning 50 games and two regular season conference crowns during the last two seasons, the University of Maine women’s basketball team would be ready for a break. Maybe the team would be content to look back at past achievements.
Perhaps the Black Bears need a rest after a successful campaign in which they won the America East Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Or possibly, Maine might think its goals and expectations are lowered after losing two-time America East Player of the Year Heather Ernest.

Old Drew, Clark P. Thompson
Old Drew, Clark P. Thompson
Maine History Documents
In the early 1800s Maine was known for producing excellent trotting horses. These horses helped to establish a unique American breed of horse that became known as "Standardbred". In 1842 a colt was foaled in Exeter, Maine, that would become a foundation sire of trotting horses in Maine and beyond. The horse, owned by Hiram Drew, was known as "the Drew horse" or "Old Drew." This article provides a short history related to the horse, his owners, and trotting horse breeding in Maine.

“Hard Work To Make Ends Meet”: Voices Of Maine’S Working-Class Women In The Late Nineteenth Century, Carol Toner
Maine History
In 1887 the Maine legislature responded to pressures from the Knights of Labor and an increasingly agitated industrial labor force by instituting the Bureau of Industrial and Labor Statistics. The bureau’s job was to examine the state's workplaces and provide information to guide the legislature in making labor law. Reflecting the ideals of the popular Knights of Labor, the bureau initially focused its investigations on female as well as male workers. When the bureau requested that workers fill out questionnaires about their work, hundreds of women responded, leaving a rare first-hand account of women’s attitudes toward their working and living …

Thomas Brackett Reed, Civil Rights, And The Fight For Fair Elections, Wendy Hazard
Maine History
Few causes in American history have proved more enduring than the effort to ensure all citizens the right to vote. From the enfranchising of African-Americans after the Civil War to the granting of women’s suffrage and the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, the country has struggled to live up to its image as the guardian of the ideal that every citizen has a guaranteed right to vote. The prolonged presidential election of 2000 and the vote-counting debacle in Florida once again focused national attention on the issue of enfranchisement. Democrats argued that the Florida election, whether by …
“A Jornal Of A Fue Days At York”: The Great Awakening On The Northern New England Frontier, Douglas L. Winiarski
“A Jornal Of A Fue Days At York”: The Great Awakening On The Northern New England Frontier, Douglas L. Winiarski
Maine History
During the early 1740s, New England communities along the northern frontier witnessed a series of religious revivals that were part of a transatlantic movement known as the Great Awakening. Promoted by touring evangelists such as George Whitefield and lesser known local clergyman, the revivals dominated the daily activities of ordinary men and women. Published here for the first time, “A Jornal of afue Days at York, 1741,” presents a vivid portrayal of the local dynamics of the Awakening in Maine and New Hampshire. The author of the “Jornal,” an anonymous Boston merchant, chronicled nightly prayer meetings, conversations with pious local …

Matched Pairs: Gender And Intertextual Dialogue In Eighteenth-Century Fiction By Joseph F. Bartolomeo (Review), Deborah D. Rogers
Matched Pairs: Gender And Intertextual Dialogue In Eighteenth-Century Fiction By Joseph F. Bartolomeo (Review), Deborah D. Rogers
English Faculty Scholarship
At first glance, this book, which is admittedly influenced by Ann Messenger’s His and Hers (1986), may conjure up images of monogrammed towels or jammies. Mr. Bartolomeo’s comparative approach across gender lines is, however, no gimmick. Rather, it is in the same spirit as his previous book, A New Species of Criticism, which argues that dialogue among and between authors and critics reflects inconsistencies that constantly remake the novel.

Times have changed. In the mid 1980s, when I wrote my biography of John Almon, a study of the reflexive effect of politics on eighteenth-century booksellers and the literature that they published, there was only a handful of books on eighteenth-century print culture, and online research in the area was practically nonexistent. The basic resources were Wing’s Short-Title Catalogue (1945– 1951), which ends at 1700, and H. R. Plomer and E. R. Dix’s Dictionary of Printers and Booksellers (1932), which covers 1726–1775. Electronic library catalogues were in their infancy; Elisabeth Eisenstein’s The Printing Press as an Agent of Change (1980), …
