Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. After the end of World War I, funds were raised to erect the Memorial Gymnasium and Armory and after World War II, those who had died were honored in a volume titled "University of Maine, World War II: In Memoriam." He received an M.Ed. in 1956 and an M.A. in history and government in 1958 from the University of Maine. He received a Ph.D. in history in 1965 from Cornell University. He taught five years at Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva, N.Y., then returned to teach at the University of Maine. In 1965 he joined the University of Maine history faculty. James Norris Hart was dean emeritus of the University of Maine and professor emeritus of mathematics and astronomy. He was born in Willimantic, Maine, in 1861 and died in 1959. He received a B.C.E. degree from the Maine State College in 1885 and a C.E. in 1890. In 1897 he earned a M.S. degree from the University of Chicago.

Hart was an instructor in mathematics at the University of Maine starting in 1887 and dean of the University in 1903. Hart was awarded for his service to the University of Maine with a degree of doctor of science in 1908. …

Howard Paul Segal was born on July 15, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Princeton University. Segal first came to the University of Maine in 1986 as an assistant professor of history and also the associate director of the Technology and Society Project in the College of Engineering. In 2020, Segal was awarded emeritus status by the University of Maine.

David White Trafford was born in Blaine, Maine, in 1916. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 and received MA and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. He joined University of Maine faculty teaching history and was appointed chair of the University of Maine Study Abroad Program in 1965.

Trafford was affiliated with the Institute of American Studies Abroad, serving as an honorary fellow of the Institute, vice president for admissions and, during the early 1980s, as director of the Institute-Affiliated British Studies Centre in Kent, England. He retired from UMaine in 1979 and died in Florida in 1993. …

Born in Everett, Massachusetts, Richard J. Campana (1918-2005) received a BSF from the University of Idaho in 1943. Campana then served as a surgical technician in the U.S. Army, and earned a Bronze Star award during WWII after being held as a prisoner of war (1943-1946). After the war, Campana earned an MS in Forestry from Yale University in 1974 and a Ph.D. in Forest Pathology in 1952. Soon after, Campana began his professional study and observation of Dutch Elm Disease

Cecil John Reynolds (1903-1998) was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1927, he won a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Literature degrees in 1930. In 1935, Reynolds began teaching at the University of Maine and in the 1940s, founded an English honors program.

The University of Maine began conferring Honorary Degrees in 1886. The first recipient to receive an Honorary Degree was Charles H. Fernald, a University professor of Natural history. Upon Fernald's resignation, the University of Maine conferred upon him a Ph. D. In 1965, the University of Maine changed its policy and conferred six to twelve honorary degrees during both the June and August Commencement ceremonies. Degree recipients ranged from presidents to Supreme Court justices to veterans and business leaders.

Ella Corinne Brown was a faculty member at the University of Maine in Orono from 1962 to 1979. She was responsible for writing the course program for parks and recreation and designed the specialized program leading to a degree in parks and recreation. Brown was born in 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri and died in Orono, Maine in 1987. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1951 and received her master's degree from Montana State University in 1961. She received her Ph.D. degree from Indiana University.

In 1883, the Maine Board of Agriculture called for the establishment of a formal experiment station in Orono. With the support of state funds the Maine Fertilizer Control and Agricultural Experiment Station (later becoming the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station). Eventually the Station would expand its research into genetics and breeding, entomology, forestry, food, potatoes, blueberries, and dairy. Such studies have been funded by both state and federal agriculture grants.

During the 1940s, the University of Maine was one of many U.S. colleges and universities to offer tuition-free summer courses under the Engineering, Sciences, and Management Defense Training Program, funded by the U.S. Office of Education.

Wieden was the principal of the Aroostook State Normal School (later the Aroostook State Teacher's College and now the University of Maine at Presque Isle) and became its president in 1953. In the summer of 1947, Wieden taught a course at Farmington State Teachers College entitled "Sociography: A Maine State Travel Course." The course involved travel, observation and interviews as well as lectures, discussion and development of teaching units.
