John Newcomer Feaster was born in 1908 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died in 1980. He received his A.B. degree from Bucknell University in 1930, with high honors. He graduated, also with honors, from the Andover-Newton Theological School in 1933. He came to Maine to accept a call to the Kennebunkport parish upon his graduation from theological school. He served there for 7 years and then served as pastor of the Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor, Maine for 7 years. Michael W. Howard (Ph.D., Boston University, 1981; M.A., Boston University, 1977; B.A., University of Chicago, 1974) came to the University of Maine in 1981 as an assistant professor of Philosophy and went on to chair the department from 1993-1998 and from 2008-2009. Professor Howard retired from the University of Maine in August 2022.

Charles F. Sawhill Virtue joined the University of Maine in 1946 as an associate professor of philosophy. In 1963, Virtue was appointed head of the Department of Philosophy. Virtue retired in 1968 and later that year was awarded emeritus status. Virtue wrote widely on the subject of philosophy including the textbook Perspectives in Culture. The record series Subject Records contains clippings and correspondence on a range of subjects, including on the work of specific philosophers.

15 diaries, 1885-1910, of John Dana Payson, a teacher, summer resort keeper, and pastor. Payson was born in Cushing, Maine in 1861. Diaries date from his time at seminary in Bucksport, followed by stations in Bangor, Dexter, Southport, Camden, and Union. Payson notes the weather, church activities such as marriages and funerals, and daily activities.

The University of Maine's Student Religious Association (SRA) represented four clubs/organizations on campus the: Hillel, The Newman Club, The Maine Christian Association and Canterbury. Although the Association didn't represent only one religion, Hillel was the only non-Christian group.

The records include materials on all the groups involved with the SRA, including administration material such as meeting minutes and reports. The Spectator Club collection contains copies of the club constitution, a history of its founding, group photographs of members taken on three different dates, a list of program topics, a few event programs, letters, bills, receipts, and minutes from meetings 1911-2000. Many of the letters offer thanks for support of various causes. Other letters thank the group for gifts and condolences following the death of one of the members. Minutes include detailed accounts of meetings along with lists of officers, members, attendance, speakers, entertainers, topics, dues, expenditures, and treasurer's reports.

William Woodsum was born in 1792 in Saco, Maine, the son of John and Sarah Woodsum. In 1814 he married Rosannah Woodman and they settled in Sumner, Maine, later moving to Peru, Maine. Woodsum was ordained in 1823 as a Free Will Baptist, preaching in about 20 Maine towns. He also served in the Maine legislature in 1833 and was a selectman in Peru in 1834 and 1836.
