A pedestrian survey was conducted in March and May of 2006 along a portion of Salado Creek located between Blanco Road and Huebner Road in the northern part of San Antonio. The Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio, in conjunction with volunteers from the South Texas Archeological Association, carried out the survey to fulfill the requirements of the contract with Rehler Vaughn and Koone, Inc., of San Antonio. The survey was followed by an interview with Mr. Marvin Klar, a long-time resident of San Antonio and former owner of much of the land that is now part of McAllister Park. The Parks and Recreation Department is planning a series of improvements to existing facilities and the construction of new facilities within the boundaries of McAllister Park. …

The work was conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 2982 with Dr. Steve A. Tomka, CAR Director, serving as Principal Investigator.

The property is the site of the Perrin Family Gravesite and will be impacted by the construction of a self-storage unit and associated improvements. Archaeological services were performed between January and March 2003 and involved archival research to compile information on the history of the Perrin Family Gravesite and fieldwork to establish the location of all burials present on site.

On November 15, 1999, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio, returned 122 curation boxes containing human remains of between 103 and 125 individuals to Monsignor Balthazar Janacek, Archdiocese Director, Old Spanish Missions. These remains had been obtained during two previous Witte Memorial Museum excavations at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Subsequently, CAR returned the majority of the burial goods associated with these human remains to Monsignor Janacek. CAR then entered into an agreement with the Archdiocese of San Antonio to locate and monitor the excavation of the two reburial areas that were to coincide …

In July 1988, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted monitoring of the construction of hand-dug trenches for installation of an air conditioning system in the church of Mission Concepcion. During the trenching for installation of electric lines one wall of the first convento was crossed. A small collection of artifacts taken from the backdirt of the trench is described, and the more unusual ones are illustrated.

Test excavations were conducted in November 1987 by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio at the site of a planned relocation of the eastbound lanes of Martin Street in downtown San Antonio. The lots in question were located on the north side of the early town site, and were known to have contained the residence of Thaddeus Smith, the county clerk for Bexar County in the last half of the 19th century. Testing was done by backhoe and by controlled hand excavations.

The Mission Road Realignment Project proposes to relocate the current position of Mission Road, which transects the original Mission Concepcion quadrangle, farther west and in the vicinity of the road's 18th-century location. Archaeological testing conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research sought to determine if significant cultural resources would be adversely impacted by the road relocation project. Intensive testing established that no significant remains were located within or adjacent to the proposed right-of-way.

The primary concern was if the San Jose Acequia would be in the location of construction. Monitoring operations began in October of the same year and continued until January 1987. The acequia was exposed in three locations and proved to be an unlined ditch.

The Vista Verde South project area has borne witness to much of the economic development that has occurred in downtown San Antonio since the early years of Texas' statehood. As with many other areas of San Antonio, economic interests stimulated early development. Following the Civil War, this area became an integral part in San Antonio's flourishing freight hauling and transportation network. By the turn of the 20th century, the area had developed into an ethnically diverse, middle-class neighborhood, while just a few blocks away, San Antonio's infamous Red Light District thrived. Upon notification that the upper San Pedro Acequia was known to be below the anticipated parking lot to be constructed for the VIA Metropolitan Transit System, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) contacted the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, to investigate and document the site. A representative from the THC examined the site and requested minimal excavation and documentation of the San Pedro Acequia in this location. We recommend that this portion of the San Pedro Acequia is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

An archival search, to determine the construction period of the present building and possible prior structures, was conducted, and an on-site inspection was made. Test excavations were carried out at two locations on the grounds of the old U.S. Arsenal in downtown San Antonio, Texas, in December 1983. Backhoe trenching at the north end of the site revealed no indication of the location of an acequia lateral suspected to run through the area. Test excavations at the south end of the stone stable building found no indication of the location of a stairway which is presumed to have led to a second story doorway in the wall of the building. La Villita Earthworks is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Texas. The site appears to have been formed initially in late February 1836, by Mexican soldiers with General Santa Anna’s invading forces during the second battle of the Alamo. The outcome of this battle has been the topic for literally thousands of books over the past 149 years. Now, for the first time, archaeological evidence has been discovered which provides the first real glimpse at the Mexican side of the battle of the Alamo. The irrigation system in San Antonio was an integral part of its early history. Within the San Antonio area irrigation was a necessity to extend the planting season. An extended planting season would allow for diversified crops with different harvesting periods. The first municipal irrigation system was the San Pedro Acequia. It was constructed to serve the town with fresh water for household use and agricultural purposes. As the population increased and technology improved, the acequias changed in both appearance and function. In time, the San Pedro Acequia system became part of San Antonio's forgotten past.
